Whoopi Goldberg honoured her late friend Elizabeth Taylor on Sunday (04Mar18) by borrowing one of her red AIDS awareness ribbons to wear at the Oscars.
The Ghost actress and TV personality attended Hollywood’s big night wearing a dark green/blue off the shoulder floral Christian Siriano ballgown, and featured the red ribbon prominently on her neckline.
While the general purpose of the accessory was widely recognised, Whoopi reveals the ribbon was extra special because it was one of the exact ones philanthropist Elizabeth herself had actually owned.
“I was wearing the red ribbon which belonged originally to Elizabeth Taylor,” she explained on Monday’s (06Mar18) episode of her talk show The View.
“It was the 25th anniversary of her receiving the Jean Hersholt (Humanitarian) Award (from Oscars bosses), and we wanted to signal to people that the fight is not over, so… that was fabulous.”
Meanwhile, Whoopi, who rarely wears dresses, admitted she had a little trouble with her gown as she headed to the Dolby Theatre ceremony.
“It wasn’t so much a malfunction, but you don’t realise that there’s a lot of tulle in your dress, so it took four people to get me in the car, and once I got in the car, all the tulle was up (against the window)…,” she shared.
“Getting out of the car was interesting, because, of course, you don’t want to show everybody your business (flash people), but there you are!”
The 62-year-old, who was able to forgo wearing high heels to the event by hiding her favourite Dr. Martens boots under her floor-length skirt, faced another wardrobe issue once she stepped into the venue.
“I had this gorgeous dress and Christian put pockets in it so I could walk around (without a bag), so it was fabulous, but I realised, when I saw the seats inside the auditorium, that I wasn’t gonna be able to sit in that dress in that auditorium, because again, it would be showing (Oscars host) Jimmy Kimmel stuff he didn’t need to see!”
It seems Whoopi decided to spend the evening hanging out backstage as a result of her dress conundrum, as she was not featured prominently on-camera during the televised ceremony.
