Harvey Weinstein’s estranged wife Georgina Chapman was greeted with cheers and applause as she returned to work recently.
The Marchesa designer has kept a low profile since allegations of sexual harassment and rape were levelled against disgraced movie producer Weinstein in October (17), but she eased herself back into the world of fashion last month (Mar18).
As well as returning to her label, Chapman also attended a Council of Fashion Designers of America (CDFA) board meeting, where her fellow CFDA members welcomed her with open arms.
Diane von Furstenberg, Michael Kors and Tommy Hilfiger were among the CFDA members to cheer and applaud the British fashion star as she walked into the room.
“We were all happy to see her,” von Furstenberg said, reports The Hollywood Reporter. “Georgina is a great designer, engaged board member, devoted mother and good friend. We all support her.”
Despite the warm welcome, a source close to Chapman said her calm demeanour was shattered when she left the meeting in New York and was mobbed by paparazzi.
“She was so upset — she doesn’t know who tipped them off,” the friend revealed. “She feels she can’t go anywhere without being descended upon, and she is very worried about the safety of her children.”
Chapman married Weinstein in 2007, and together they have daughter India, seven, and five-year-old son Dashiell.
As well as multiple accusations of sexual misconduct, it has also been claimed that Weinstein pressured actresses including Sienna Miller and Felicity Huffman to wear Marchesa designs on the red carpet.
Earlier this year, Marchesa, the luxury label Chapman created with Keren Craig in 2004, cancelled its New York Fashion Week runway show in favour of a digital presentation.
