Kaia Gerber is adamant that she is not “a trendy person” in spite of her fashion credentials.
The 16-year-old has become a catwalk favourite since she made her runway debut for Raf Simons’ Calvin Klein Collection 2017, and having modelled for some of the world’s biggest fashion brands, she recently turned her attention to design. Her new capsule collection in collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld went live online last Thursday (30Aug18), with every piece tailored to Kaia’s own clothing preferences.
“I’m so grateful that Karl sees things the way I do where we didn’t really want to stick with trends with this,” she explained to WWD during the collection’s launch at the Revolve Social Club in Los Angeles. “We wanted to keep it classic, and that’s how I dress. I’m not a very trendy person. I live in a leather jacket or a blazer or a little black dress, and I think Karl really understands that about dressing women and dressing people in general, so we did a lot of basics, but our own versions of it.”
The fashion icon added that customers can expect “a lot of that California, laid-back style and then a lot of that chic, Parisian style,” as she and Karl both ensured that the pieces felt authentic to their personal styles. And though Kaia has plenty of experience when it comes to wearing designer clothes, she soon learned that creating them was an entirely different matter.
“Being a model, I feel like you see part of the behind the scenes, but you don’t really see the whole design process because when you get there, the clothes are ready for the most part,” she shared. “So, actually, I have a new appreciation for what designers do and all of the hard work and time that goes into making a collection.
“I don’t know how Karl does what he does. It’s really insane to me,” she smiled.
