Actress Zendaya found inspiration in the unlikeliest of garments for her new Tommy Hilfiger collection – her grandad’s old work shirts.
The Spider-Man: Homecoming star announced her capsule collection collaboration with the fashion giant last fall (Oct18) and instead of drawing from the more flashy items in her wardrobe for design ideas, she went straight to hand-me-downs.
“They’re (grandfather’s old work shirts) my most favourite clothes I’ve ever owned,” she gushes to Harper’s Bazaar. “I actually recreated them for the Tommy x Zendaya collection.”
Zendaya found no resistance from fashion guru Tommy, and was fully embraced when she walked into the design room with her blast from the past.
“He told me how I would be able to truly have creative control from concept to clothing, down to the font on the packaging,” she smiles. “I was in heaven when I showed up with my inspiration boards and a million ideas, and I was allowed to just go for it, with all the support in the world.”
Zendaya, who launched her own inclusive fashion line – Daya – in 2016, also relied heavily on her longtime stylist Law Roach to help her craft the Tommy Hilfiger pieces, noting she has come to depend on the fashion professional after working with him for close to a decade.
“I really lean on him, and I partnered with him creatively for this collection,” the 22 year old says of Roach. “I met him when I was 14, and it’s been just us ever since. He really understands my taste, partly because he helped me develop it.
“I’ve learned so much about fashion history from him. One year I asked him to find me a bunch of vintage Tommy (Hilfiger) gear so that I could dress up as Aaliyah for Halloween. Because of the close relationship we have, I know he will always keep it real with me even if it’s hard. You need those kind of people.”
The Tommy x Zendaya capsule for Tommy Hilfiger will debut at Paris Fashion Week in March (19).
