Annette Bening needed a crash course to understand the Marvel Cinematic Universe before filming began on Captain Marvel.
The four-time Oscar nominee is best known for critically acclaimed dramas and comedies like American Beauty, Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool and The Kids Are All Right, but has swapped her usual genres for the new superhero flick.
Playing Supreme Intelligence in the Brie Larson-fronted film, 60-year-old Bening admitted to New York Post’s Page Six that she was a little out of her comfort zone in the role.
“Me, a Marvel movie? No idea I’d ever do something like Captain Marvel. I needed a crash course to understand what I was doing,” she smiled. “My stuff’s mostly with Brie Larson, who plays Captain Marvel. The way she does it is that she insists it’s real for her. That it’s grounded in the story… My way to do this was to relate to it on a personal, human level.”
Talking about the movie to U.S. talk show host Stephen Colbert recently, the actress also revealed that she roped in her kids Stephen, 27, Benjamin, 24, Isabel, 22, and 18-year-old Ella, who she has with husband Warren Beatty, to help explain the plot.
“When I read the script, I did find it slightly confusing,” she said. “However, I took into my confidence, and the confidence of the entire Disney corporation, two of my kids. Who I then told the story to, and asked them to please explain to me what the hell was going on.”
Captain Marvel hits cinemas from 6 March (19).
