Actress Blake Lively might seem like she’s effortlessly cool at big events, but she’s always tied up in knots and battling butterflies on her way to red carpets.

The A Simple Favor star, who is considered a fashion tastemaker with her fabulous outfit choices, admits she can’t get comfortable in front of cameras unless she plays a character.

“The only way that I feel comfortable doing red carpets and interviews is when I adopt the same thing that I do when I’m acting, which is to play a character,” she tells screen star Sydney Sweeney in a joint interview with InStyle. “So when I’m going to a premiere, I think, ‘Who is that character?’ And I step into that. I still get knots in my stomach before red carpets.”

Although her nerves still get the better of her before she debuts an ensemble at a big event, Blake has a lot of faith in her choices and doesn’t employ a stylist.

“You just want to represent yourself properly, so that’s why I chose to style myself,” she said, revealing her former Gossip Girl TV gig helped her develop style confidence.

“I also had the very fortunate and unique opportunity of being on Gossip Girl, where fashion was a main character,” she added, “so I started developing a relationship with designers, and then I’d get their email addresses. It all happened organically.”

To pump up her confidence when she is wearing a particularly sexy gown, Blake channels bombshell Jennifer Lopez before she graces the red carpet.

“With some outfits you need to do a smolder (face expression) because if you’re wearing a slit up to your hip bone and you’re smiling like you’re on (Disney thrill ride) Space Mountain; it just doesn’t go together,” she explained. “It took me a few years to learn it too. If you pretend that you’re J.Lo, that helps.”
