Margot Robbie switches up her scents on set because they help her get into character.

The 29-year-old has played a diverse range of characters, from DC Comics’ Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, to actress Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

And speaking to Australia’s Sunday Life magazine, the actress revealed perfumes have become an important part of her preparation before she takes on a new role.

“I pick a fragrance for every character I play,” she shared. “When I go on set and apply the fragrance, I find it’s easier to get into character.

“It’s a very powerful tool!”

Margot went on to explain that the unusual method works because “certain smells can transport you to a time and place or create a specific feeling”.

The star has been a fragrance ambassador for French fashion house Chanel since 2018 and is the face of brand-new perfume Gabrielle Chanel Essence – named after label founder Coco Chanel, real name Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel.

Elsewhere in the interview, the Oscar nominee opened up about her style, and revealed she prefers to mix up feminine and masculine pieces.

“Personally, I love beautiful things but I’m also pragmatic: I look for freedom of movement. I love a silk suit, flats and the mix of masculine and feminine style. That makes me feel powerful and feminine, comfortable but confident. I think nothing’s more alluring than confidence,” the blonde beauty explained. “We all know women are incredibly strong, but I don’t believe it means you have to hide your femininity.”
