Giorgio Armani is “frustrated” that accessories aren’t a bigger part of his fashion empire.
The Italian icon launched his company in 1975 and has since gone on to build a reputation for stylish suits and classic red carpet gowns, with his celebrity clients including Lady Gaga, Cate Blanchett, Zendaya, and Anne Hathaway.
While Armani offers handbags, footwear, and jewellery in addition to his couture and ready-to-wear lines, in an interview for Vogue Italia, he explained that he has always had issues with his accessories categories.
“We have done hundreds and millions of accessories over the years, but nobody talks about them and I am frustrated,” he told the fashion publication. “My challenge is not to be able to sell accessories… Everybody tells me that the fortune of all the other brands is that they sell mostly accessories. I sell very few – so I can always sell more. I do fashion, sports clothes, young people’s clothes – but accessories are not quite there yet.”
Elsewhere in the chat, Armani reflected on receiving the Outstanding Achievement Award at The Fashion Awards 2019 on Monday night.
But even though he was thrilled to take home the prestigious prize, he also found it slightly humorous that officials at the British Fashion Council (BFC) have taken so long to recognise his contribution to the industry.
“Maybe it’s because I don’t do eccentric fashion, English people have only now understood my evolution,” the 85-year-old mused.
“I know that the old style of English fashion for men is over – it changed, the world has changed – no one smokes pipes anymore.”
Previous winners of the Outstanding Achievement Award include Miuccia Prada, Ralph Lauren, Karl Lagerfeld, Anna Wintour, Terry and Tricia Jones, and Manolo Blahnik, among others.
