Anna Wintour gave Billy Porter permission for his extravagant arrival at the 2019 Met Gala.
In an extravagant and theatrical nod to the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, the Pose star arrived at the prestigious fashion event back in May wearing a custom Sun God ensemble created by The Blonds.
The show-stopping look featured a gold bejewelled catsuit that included huge 10-foot wings, an opulent 24-carat gold headpiece, as well as custom gold-leaf Giuseppe Zanotti shoes and jewels by Andreoli, John Hardy, and Oscar Heyman.
Billy credited his stylist Sam Ratelle for coming up with the idea of being carried in by six men wearing gold headpieces and make-up, and he confessed he was initially sceptical that they would be allowed to do it until the U.S. Vogue editor-in-chief stepped in.
“I didn’t have to do anything. My stylist did it. It was his idea to have that moment. That’s a big deal. Miss Anna Wintour said, ‘Yes,'” he told WWD. “My stylist had the idea and I was like, ‘Child, please, that ain’t gonna happen.’
“Two weeks later, he was like, ‘Girl! You’re getting carried in, darling, by six shirtless men…'” Billy laughed.
The 50-year-old worked on the outlandish Egyptian-themed creation with designers Phillipe and David Blond, who are the brains behind their luxury apparel brand The Blonds.
“Their clothes make me feel like a rock star and I’m about to do that s**t, too,” Billy teased. “Grandpa’s coming back to the music industry, y’all get ready.”
