Teyana Taylor learnt that “less is more” when it comes to make-up after she overdid the blush for a red carpet appearance.

The R&B singer has teamed up with MAC Cosmetics to create a ’90s-inspired collection, and the collaboration means a lot to her because she was a big fan of their products growing up.

Her relationship with the brand began when she was a make-up novice armed with the Hello Kitty x MAC collection back in 2008. She had no idea how much blush you’re supposed to apply or what lip shades worked for her and she learned the hard way that less works best after caking the cosmetics on for a red carpet appearance.

“One day, I powdered all this blush on my cheeks, and I thought I was so cute. Well, baby, I got on that red carpet, and that flash hit me, and (the media) tore me up the next day,” she recalled to Elle.com. “I don’t do too much these days. Less is more is the rule I follow.”

The 29-year-old struggled to embrace her “strong features” growing up and so she wants her MAC collection to cater for Black women whose features have held them back from experimenting with cosmetics.

“I realised that the power was really within my lips, my big fluffy lips, and that colours look great on it,” she continued. “Sometimes we get discouraged as Black women to feel like we can’t touch specific colours like red or nude, but I wanted to create colours that work for everyone, but most importantly, when that Black girl puts on that lipstick or lip gloss, she feels beautiful.”

The MAC x Teyana Taylor collection launches on 14 July.
