Lizzo is struggling to accept her natural hair but eventually wants to ditch wigs and weaves.

The Juice hitmaker, real name Melissa Viviane Jefferson, is an exuberant and confident character during her gigs and appearances on the red carpet.

However, Lizzo explained during a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter that she is on a “journey” to self-love and wants to fully embrace her own tresses.

“The final frontier for me is the wigs and the weaves – my natural hair, my natural state truly,” she candidly shared. “I’m working on it. It’s a struggle. We’re not there yet. There’s no top of the mountain for self-love. It’s a journey that continues forever, so I think it’s a part of it. You gotta love that part. That’s the juiciest part of you though.”

Elsewhere in the chat, Lizzo explained that she is open to stripping away costumes and cosmetics too, as she is adamant everyone should be able to embrace their nude bodies.

“Loving who you are should start in the buff. You should essentially, by the end of your self-love journey, be completely in love with who you are with no make-up, no extra hair, no styling, no corsetry. That’s my opinion for my life – I don’t think anybody should have to subscribe to that,” the 31-year-old mused. “But I feel like if I can love that person, then anything else is possible within the spectrum of self-love. My skin, my face, no make-up – that’s fine.”

And the singer, who wore a House of Holland wood-grain inspired outfit – complete with matching nails – to the BET Awards back in June, revealed she loves turning “jokes” into offbeat ensembles.

“I really love my team, my creative team: hair, make-up, styling. We get to just really play around. We love exploring with colour, shapes, motifs, big ideas, and jokes. Turning jokes into a red carpet look is what we do best. My personality, you can see it. I don’t even have to say nothing. I walk into a room and you know what’s up,” Lizzo smiled.

Lizzo made a sartorial statement in a woodgrain-inspired number at the 2019 BET Awards on Sunday night.

The Juice hitmaker posed up a storm as she made her entrance at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, with her quirky outfit from House of Holland turning heads.

Lizzo, who also performed her hit song Truth Hurts during the ceremony, accessorised her look with matching hat and handpainted shoes, as well as a custom manicure by Eri Ishizu.

Taking to Instagram, the 31-year-old posted several snaps of her ensemble, and added the captions, “No I’m not a branch at all look baby I’m the whole damn tree! CUSTOM WOODGRAIN LEWK FOR THE @BETAWARDS,” and “Ooop! Did I give you a woody?”

A number of Lizzo’s celebrity pals were quick to praise her outfit, with actress Anna Faris writing, “Yeah!!” and Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness commenting, “Slay us to death queen dayum (sic),” alongside a string of heart eye emojis.

Other stars to pull out all of the stops for the 2019 BET Awards included Rihanna, who sported a full black leather outfit when presenting Mary J. Blige with the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Ciara, who wore a tangerine Jean Paul Gaultier dress with dramatic sleeves. The Goodies star completed her look with Stuart Weitzman shoes and jewellery from Anita Ko.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta personality Eva Marcille showed off her growing baby bump in a flowing pink gown from Michael Costello, Karrueche Tran wowed in a bright yellow suit as she walked the blue carpet with American football player Victor Cruz, and Black-ish star Yara Shahidi opted for a striking Prabal Gurung look complete with silver sequin skirt.

La La Anthony rocked a gold minidress, Migos trio Quavo, Takeoff, and Offset looked dapper in pastel suits with harnesses, and Blac Chyna went for a bombshell vibe in a red dress and platinum blonde wig, while host Regina Hall looked stunning in a black dress with voluminous sleeves.

Director Tyler Perry received a standing ovation after delivering an inspirational speech as he accepted an honour at the 2019 BET Awards on Sunday.

The filmmaker, who is perhaps best known for creating and performing as the character Madea, took to the stage at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles to accept the Ultimate Icon Award, and during his speech, he spoke about how he’s always sharing opportunities and trying to help the likes of Taraji P. Henson and Idris Elba get a break by casting them in his movies.

“When I started hiring people like Taraji, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, they couldn’t get jobs in this town, but God blessed me to be in a position to be able to hire them. I was trying to help somebody cross,” said Perry, who continued to explain that he helped his mother cross by making films which “let black women know they are worthy, special, powerful, amazing.”

The Gone Girl actor went on to detail why he chose the location of his film studio in Atlanta, Georgia.

“When I built my studio, I built it in a neighbourhood that is one of the poorest black neighbourhoods in Atlanta, so that young black kids could see that a black man did that and they could do it, too,” he continued. “That studio was once a Confederate Army base – and I want you to hear this – which meant that there were Confederate soldiers on that base plotting and planning on how to keep 3.9 million Negroes enslaved. Now that land is owned by one Negro.”

After receiving applause and a standing ovation for his comment, the 49-year-old concluded, “While everybody was fighting for a seat at the table, talking about #OscarsSoWhite, I said, ‘Y’all go ahead and do that, but while you’re fighting for a seat at the table, I’ll be down in Atlanta building my own’… Rather than being an icon, I want to be an inspiration.”

Other winners on the night included Regina King and Michael B. Jordan, who won Best Actress and Best Actor, while BlacKkKlansman was named Best Movie.

J. Cole has vowed to remain true to his fashion preferences after regretting a stylist’s suggestion.

The rapper was preparing for the BET awards in 2013 when his personal dresser suggested he wear a Versace sweater to the event. The black pullover, featuring gold medallions, was considered to be over the top by Cole but his team convinced him it would raise his profile.

“I remember it like, ‘Nah, bro, you gotta step it up a level, you gotta own some superstar s**t’, almost with the implication that I could be further along if I just looked like a star,” he tells GQ. “This is what the people want to see.”

The 34 year old recalls hitting red carpet only to discover two other artists, DJ Drama and Brandon T. Jackson, were sporting the exact same item and now notes the piece would have been better suited for someone like French Montana.

“Man, look, no disrespect to French, but I feel like this (is) some s**t French Montana would have on,” he shares, revealing he didn’t recognise himself in the mirror at the time.

He adds, “I’m like looking in the mirror like, ‘Who the f**k is this?’”

Following the incident, the star retreated from the limelight to engage in some much needed self reflection, and he now insists to the time away from the spotlight helped pave the way towards him becoming a family man, later marrying his college sweetheart Melissa Heholt and welcoming a son.

“For a while, I felt a little weird about it,” he adds of his career break. “I felt, ‘Did I miss something?’ ‘Cause I didn’t feel the change that people talk about. And then I figured out what it was. I changed my life in order to get ready to have a family and to have a son. I literally changed my life, where I was living, the things that I was doing. I changed. So because of that, when my son came, I was ready. I already made room.”

Nicki Minaj picked out three sexy outfits to wear during her 2018 BET Awards performance.

The rapper took to the stage during the ceremony held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday (24Jun18) and drove the crowd wild by kicking off her spectacle by performing one of her two comeback singles, Chun-Li.

Her first outfit consisted of a red and black belted coat sparkling with sequins along the trim, which Nicki paired with thigh-high shiny latex boots.

After bringing the stage to life with the help of her dancers, who helped recreate the Japan-inspired music video, the Anaconda hitmaker ditched the jacket to reveal a raunchy PVC minidress.

The neckline plunged towards her midriff and accessories including nude fishnet tights and a diamante chain necklace reading Chun-Li.

Finally, the 35-year-old took the opportunity to make a final outfit change when YG took to the stage to perform Big Bank with fellow rappers 2 Chainz and Big Sean.

Nicki reemerged to join the trio and delivered her verse of the song by sitting on a plastic pink horse while wearing a baby pink belted basque adorned with sparkling silver panels, and accessorised with high-heeled metallic shoe boots.

Another musician to make a statement at the event was Janelle Monae, who rocked the red carpet wearing a statement rainbow coloured dress to pay tribute to Pride 2018.

The 32-year-old, who recently revealed she identifies as pansexual, looked stunning in an emerald green detailed bustier which was jazzed up by a frilled tulle skirt which symbolised Pride’s signature rainbow flag emblem.

The Pynk star gave the eye-catching outfit an androgynous twist by adding a red and black military style cap and had a pink, purple and blue diamante clutch bag draped over her wrist.
