Geri Horner has recalled how she cut up a tea towel to create her first Union Jack dress during her days with the Spice Girls.
In a new video for Vogue, Ginger Spice detailed the back story behind the now-iconic minidress, which landed her on the front of every British newspaper the day after she sported it for the girl group’s BRIT Awards performance in 1997.
Remembering how she was handed a short black Gucci dress to wear for the Spice Girls’ special performance, Geri then decided to ramp it up by adding the flag to the front.
“I don’t know if this is true, but you’re not meant to cut up a (British) flag,” she said. “In the olden days, you could be sent to the Tower (of London)… so I found a tea towel.”
Geri enlisted her sister, who is “better at sewing”, as seamstress, before a stylist tried to shut down the show-stopping fashion statement, announcing the outfit was “racist” because of the flag’s association with far-right nationalists.
“I was like, ‘Oh my goodness… no, stop. We (Spice Girls) celebrate all cultures,'” the 47-year-old recalled, before going on to share her amazement at the press coverage. “I woke up the next morning and the picture of me in that dress was on the front page of every newspaper. That dress really became the identity of what girl power stood for. People would wear their own version of it. Suddenly, you saw the British flag on a lot of fashion. It came back to that thing of being proud of who we are.”
And Geri still feels rather proud of her own kitchen-to-stage transformation.
“I’ve always been, like, a secret fashion designer,” she laughed.

Harry Styles appeared to pay a touching tribute to his ex-girlfriend Caroline Flack by wearing a black ribbon on his suit jacket at the 2020 BRIT Awards.
The Adore You hitmaker hit the red carpet at The O2 in London on Tuesday night wearing a maroon Gucci suit, which he paired with a broderie anglaise collared shirt, purple sweater, purple nails, and a pearl necklace.
Eagle-eyed fans spotted the black ribbon on the lapel on his designer suit, and he was also seen wearing a badge with the words, ‘Treat People with Kindness’ badge, according to editors at Digital Spy.
Harry first met Caroline, who presented The X Factor spin-off show The Xtra Factor, during his stint on the ITV talent show, and the pair dated for three months in 2011.
The 40-year-old Love Island presenter tragically died on Saturday after taking her own life at her home in London, and an inquest into her death opened on Wednesday.
Elsewhere at the star-studded bash, the former One Direction singer stunned with two extravagant outfit changes. He wore a custom-made white Gucci lace jumpsuit complete with fluted cuffs and matching gloves to perform his emotional track Falling at the awards ceremony.
The 26-year-old then changed into a banana yellow suit from Marc Jacobs’s spring/summer 2020 womenswear collection and teamed the outfit with a lilac shirt and ruffled high collar.
However, the suit was later ruined by BRITs host Jack Whitehall, who accidentally spilled a glass of wine on it.

Billie Eilish rocked a custom Burberry outfit, complete with matching bonnet, to the 2020 BRIT Awards on Tuesday night.
The Bad Guy hitmaker’s unique look featured the luxury British brand’s iconic check on a cosy camel sweater and trousers, with the outfit topped off with a beige trench coat, plaid socks, and a matching manicure.
Her eye-catching ensemble, heavily influenced by a look spotted at creative director Riccardo Tisci’s spring/summer 2020 show during London Fashion Week, was complemented with chunky beige boots and jewels from Tiffany & Co.
It was a big night for the 18-year-old, who performed her Bond theme No Time to Die for the first time at the ceremony and also scooped the accolade for Best International Female.
Lizzo was also among the celebrities making a show-stopping statement on the red carpet, as she wore a custom dress, designed by Jeremy Scott for Moschino, made to look like the wrapper of a Hershey’s chocolate bar.
The floor-length gown even included a barcode and the nutritional value of the sweet treat, while the Juice hitmaker accessorised with a chocolate-bar inspired clutch bag by Judith Leiber.
Harry Styles led the stylish men on the red carpet, rocking a Gucci suit before changing into two more designer outfits during the star-studded bash.
While Stormzy, who wowed fans with his incredible performance at the BRITs, looked chic in white trousers and a matching high neck jumper from Dior.

Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell have revealed Daniel Craig is heavily involved in choosing the theme song for his James Bond movies.
The Grammy Award-winning singer wrote No Time to Die, the theme song for the upcoming Bond movie of the same name, with the help of her songwriting partner and brother O’Connell, with her making the history books as the youngest artist ever to record a Bond theme.
In an interview with BBC Breakfast, the duo revealed they wouldn’t have landed the coveted job if Craig didn’t like the song they created.
“He has a big say in it,” the Bad Guy hitmaker said. “He’s really involved. We haven’t met him but he’s got to like it before they move on.”
“He had to like it,” Finneas added. “If Daniel doesn’t like it then you don’t get the job.”
The new Bond theme, which was written and recorded “on a tour bus in Texas” in three days, was performed by the duo for the first time at the BRIT Awards in London on Tuesday night.
Finneas also revealed that he and his younger sister managed to score a sneak peek of the film’s script to give them inspiration for their lyrics.
The 22-year-old recently told Good Morning America that he managed to persuade producers to let them have a read through of some of the script to make sure their track reflected the storyline of the upcoming film.
“We didn’t want to go in blind, so we asked if we could have any of the script and we were given a scene of the script to read and that informed all the lyrics,” Finneas shared.
Craig makes his fifth and final appearance as 007 in No Time to Die, which hits cinemas in April.

Pop star Ed Sheeran did nothing to quell marriage rumours when he showed up to the Brit Awards sporting a gold wedding band on his left ring finger.
Reports suggesting the Shape of You singer has tied the knot with his long-time love, Cherry Seaborn, have been swirling for weeks, and the singer’s appearance on the red carpet at the O2 Arena appeared to confirm the hearsay.
Ed arrived wearing a white rose in the lapel of his smart navy suit – a nod to the Time’s Up anti-sexual harassment movement – with the silver ring on full display.
The Thinking Out Loud star proposed to Cherry on New Year’s Eve (31Dec17).
Ed, who wasn’t joined by his wife-to-be on the red carpet, wasn’t the only one professing his love at the event – Little Mix stars Jesy Nelson, Jade Thirlwall and Leigh-Anne Pinnock all arrived with their boyfriends, while Zayn Malik’s ex-fiancee Perrie Edwards connected with her man, soccer star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, inside.
The Little Mix beauties turned heads in their sexy outfits, donning leather and see-through numbers to the bash.
Rita Ora also made a statement by hitting the red carpet in a flowing white and mint-coloured couture gown by Ralph & Russo, while frills were all the rage for many stars at the Brits this year, with Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown taking on the trend in a tiered white Rodarte dress with black polka dots, and big winner Dua Lipa, who took home two trophies on the night, dazzling in a dreamy pink gown with a train so long it extended several feet behind her.

Rita Ora wowed in a white gown at the 2018 BRIT Awards on Wednesday night (21Feb18).
The singer led a parade of celebrities at the music event held at The O2 Arena in London and posed up a storm on the red carpet in a strapless Ralph & Russo dress featuring delicate feather detailing on the skirt.
She accessorised the glamorous look with diamond jewellery from Lorraine Schwartz, and like many other stars, carried a white rose on the red carpet to signify her support of the Time’s Up movement fighting gender inequality and sexual harassment.
Following in Rita’s footsteps was Camila Cabello, who also opted to sport Ralph & Russo. The Havana hitmaker stunned in a periwinkle blue dress comprised of layers of floaty fabric and topped off her attire by having her brunette locks swept back into a chic plait.
Ellie Goulding went for an ’80s-inspired number featuring puffed sleeves from Stella McCartney and matched her attire with pointed black pumps with red frills on the heels, as well as Beladora jewellery.
“Wearing @stellamccartney for the Brit Awards. What a beautiful celebration of music tonight, and women! #TIMESUP #80s B**ch,” she captioned a snap posted on her Instagram page.
Dua Lipa turned heads in a stunning pale pink Giambattista Valli gown tied with a black ribbon at the centre, while Rosie Huntington-Whiteley made a sartorial statement in a black sequin Saint Laurent minidress with dramatic shoulder details.
Millie Bobby Brown looked pretty in a black and white polka dot Rodarte dress and Repossi jewellery. The Stranger Things star had her hair styled into a low bun, and also carried a white rose.
“So fun to attend the brit awards tonight and hold a rose to show that I stand with #timesup (sic). Congratulations to everyone who won tonight!” she wrote alongside a snap shared on her social media pages.
