Halle Berry has pulled out of playing a transgender character in an upcoming movie after receiving backlash online.
During an Instagram Live with hairstylist Christin Brown on Friday, the Oscar-winning actress shared that the film was pitched to her a few months ago, but she was already working on her directorial debut Bruised, in which she plays a mixed martial arts fighter.
“I’m thinking of (playing) a character where the woman is a trans character, so she’s a woman that transitioned into a man. She’s a character in a project I love that I might be doing,” Halle explained.
The X-Men star faced a barrage of criticism on social media over her comments, with many irked by her misgendering the character by calling her a woman rather than a man during the chat.
On Monday, Halle apologised for her comments and subsequently pulled out of the role, saying in a statement on Twitter that she was “grateful for the guidance and critical conversation” she has received since she revealed the news.
“I’d like to apologize for those remarks. As a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role, and that the transgender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their own stories,” she wrote. “I vow to be an ally in using my voice to promote better representation on-screen, both in front of and behind the camera.”
In the Instagram Live chat with Christin, the 53-year-old said she wanted to “experience the world” of a transgender character, and would be cutting her hair off to play the role.
“That’s what I want to experience and understand and study and explore… it’s really important to me to tell stories, and that’s a woman, that’s a female story – it changes to a man, but I want to understand the why and how of that. I want to get into it,” the mother-of-two added.

Halle Berry has detailed her go-to recipe for a natural face mask.
The Monster’s Ball actress took to Instagram on Sunday to post a mirror selfie of herself standing in her bathroom while wearing the thick mask.
In the accompanying caption, Halle encouraged fans to take some time out for themselves and practice some self-care, especially those living in lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“No better time than now for a #SelfcareSunday,” she wrote. “Let’s Re-spin our skin ya’ll. Today, I’m sharing one of my favourite at-home face mask recipes.”
Linking to the Instagram account for Re-spin, her lifestyle brand, Halle promised her six million followers that they would be able to make the mask from ingredients located in their kitchen cupboards. The suggested recipe consists of two tablespoons of brewed green tea, one pinch of turmeric powder, 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice, and 1/4 cup of plain yoghurt.
Once mixed together, the mask should be applied in two layers: the first “generous” coat for three minutes and a second coat for 10 minutes. Rinse off with cool water and then apply moisturiser as usual.
“This potion brightens, tightens, reduces fine lines and enhances that natural glow and it’s super easy!” the 53-year-old insisted.
Halle launched Re-spin in early 2020. Described as a “digital health and wellness community”, the company promotes physical and mental wellness through workout videos and inspiration. So far, the project is comprised of an app and a line of workout gear.
Prior to the disruption caused by coronavirus crisis, the star was also set to make her directorial debut on Bruised, a film about a mixed martial arts fighter.

Halle Berry is set to make her directorial debut with a mixed martial arts action drama.
The Oscar winner will also star in Bruised, which features many of the stunt co-ordinators and producers involved in the John Wick movie franchise.
Halle plays a no-nonsense character called Sofia in John Wick 3: Parabellum, opposite Keanu Reeves.
The new film, written by Michelle Rosenfarb, will centre upon a disgraced MMA fighter who is reunited with the kid she walked out on ahead of a career-defining fight.
Production starts in March (19), according to Deadline.
Bruised won’t be the first time Berry has got involved in the business of making movies – she served as a producer on last year’s (17) Kidnap and 2010’s Frankie & Alice. She also executive produced TV movies Lackawanna Blues and Introducing Dorothy Dandridge and TV series Extant.
Berry is on the verge of a career revival in front of the camera after a string of critical flops – in addition to John Wick 3: Parabellum, she has also signed on to star in the remake of 1985 thriller Jagged Edge.
And she’s keen to take on more action roles after training with the elite stunt team for her new Keanu Reeves movie, documenting her fitness sessions online as she got into fighting shape.
“#Sofia has been my most physically challenging role to date,” she wrote on Instagram. “I have never trained this hard before in my life, and I’ve become a better person for it – challenges like this keep us youthful, energized, confident – it helps us realize we can do more than we ever thought.”
