Donald Glover has joined forces with Adidas Originals for a new line of items and short films that inspire storytelling through fashion.

The actor and musician, also known as Childish Gambino, has been an ambassador for the brand since last year (18), and he has now unveiled a range of pieces that include reimagined versions of the classic items from the label.

“Rich is a concept,” Glover says in a press release. “With this project, I wanted to encourage people to think about how their stories can be told on their feet.

“Value isn’t quantified by what you wear, rather the experiences from them. And you make the decision on what works for you, you live through your own lens. The partnership for me is about being able to exemplify what doing your own thing truly looks and feels like.”

Among the revisited styles are the Nizza, the Continental 80 and the Lacombe. The footwear features deconstructed details, like uneven stitching, inside-out golden eyestays, and a custom three-Stripe mark that appears hand painted.

“As a visionary, we admire Glover’s capability to surpass ‘genres’ and uniquely tell a story,” says Chris Law, Adidas Originals senior design director, in a statement. “From a design perspective, we drove the aesthetic of this collection based on Adidas’ rich history in classic sneakers and Glover’s philosophy of understated points of interest and appreciation for how shoes evolve with wear, expressing more personality over time. Between Glover’s artistic vision and our expertise, we will continue to evolve and look forward to where that takes us.”

Along with the new looks, the star has teamed with bosses at the brand for video promos showcasing the looks. They feature actress and comedienne Mo’Nique and professional skateboarder Na-Kel Smith.

The Donald Glover Presents film series will be released on 18 April (19) while the line will be available globally on 26 April (19).

Meanwhile, Childish Gambino will headline the second Saturday at the Coachella festival in California this weekend (20Apr19).

Rihanna has heaped praise on Donald Glover for “trusting” her with a role in Guava Island.

The singer and Ocean’s 8 star began working with the Atlanta actor on the top-secret project in August (18), and the 56-minute musical film finally premiered at the Coachella Music Festival last week (ends14Apr19) before streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Rihanna has stayed silent about the project for months, but on Wednesday night, she opened up about the film for the first time and thanked Donald, who also goes by the stage name Childish Gambino, for casting her as his love interest Kofi Novia.

“Wow! the response to #GuavaIsland has been quite overwhelming,” she wrote on Instagram. “So happy you guys felt the beauty in this film! @childishgambino you are a true gem to the culture. I’m so proud of you and the work you put into making this film. I felt how close this was to you and your entire team! Thank you for trusting me with this role! It was the greatest experience being in Cuba, phones off, present with life and art! It was humbling! I loved watching every second of it!”

She accompanied the message with a clip of Donald’s character Deni Maroon serenading Kofi with a romantic song on the beach.

The project was first revealed in August when pictures of the duo shooting the film in Havana, Cuba surfaced online, and it was only officially announced when a teaser clip from the movie premiered at Donald’s PHAROS Festival in New Zealand.

Announcing the film’s release on Amazon, the 35-year-old previously said in a statement, “I’m really humbled having the opportunity to present something this timely and timeless. Between Rihanna and the people of Cuba, this is one of my favourite projects I’ve ever worked on.”

The film, which also stars Black Panther’s Letitia Wright and Game of Thrones’ Nonso Anozie, marks the feature directorial debut for Hiro Murai, who directed Childish Gambino’s award-winning music video for This Is America.

Donald Glover and Rihanna’s new movie Guava Island will briefly stream for free on Amazon Video.

Back in August 2018, the stars began work on the secret project in Cuba, with Glover’s Atlanta and This Is America video collaborator Hiro Murai directing, and Black Panther’s Letitia Wright and Game of Thrones actor Nonso Anozie also involved.

Previously, it was announced that Guava Island would premiere at the Coachella festival in Indio, California on Thursday (11Apr19), one day before Glover’s alter ego, Childish Gambino, is due to take the stage at the event.

The film will screen throughout the festival in a “specially-constructed” theatre, and on Wednesday, executives at Amazon Studios also revealed that Guava Island will be broadcast on Amazon Prime Video on 13 April from 12.01am.

It will be available to stream for free for the first 18 hours in more than 200 countries, after which it will be only accessible for Amazon Prime Video subscribers. The movie will also stream on Twitch starting at 5 pm.

Details about the plot of the film remain under wraps, though a short trailer, which originally premiered at the PHAROS festival in New Zealand in November, is now available to view online.

In a short statement, Glover shared his excitement over the project – which is described as his “idea of freedom.”

“I’m really humbled having the opportunity to present something this timely and timeless. Between Rihanna and the people of Cuba, this is one of my favourite projects I’ve ever worked on,” the Solo: A Star Wars Story actor said, while Murai added: “Guava Island is the end result of four incredible weeks spent in Cuba with some of the most inspiring creative talents I’ve ever met. Designers, performers, musicians, and filmmakers came together from all over the world to create this crazy fever dream of a production.”

Donald Glover has opened up about rumours speculating that he’s going to play Willy Wonka in a new movie.

The multi-talented star has become hot Hollywood property in recent years, starring in blockbusters Solo: A Star Wars Story and Spider-Man: Homecoming, as well as his award-winning TV series Atlanta.

He’s also voicing Simba in the upcoming live-action Lion King remake and recently won a Grammy as his rap alter ego Childish Gambino.

On top of all that, movie insiders report that Glover is in talks to star as the famous Roald Dahl character, previously portrayed onscreen by Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp.

“It kind of terrified me as a child a little bit,” Glover told Entertainment Tonight of 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. “It was a really scary movie to me. I mean, I watched it a lot but I was kind of terrified by it. I mean, you know, it’s a classic.

“I don’t know, there have been a lot of Willy Wonkas,” he added of him potentially taking on the role. “I would have to think about it on some level. But it’s cool that people are thinking about me.”

When pushed for details about how he’d reinterpret the character he laughed: “No I haven’t thought about it at all, I’ll leave that to Twitter.”

The Hollywood rumour mill went into overdrive last week (ends10Jun18), when it was reported that Glover, Ryan Gosling and Ezra Miller were all in the running to play the famous chocolate factory owner in Warner Bros.’ planned Willy Wonka movie.

Paddington director Paul King and writer Simon Rich are both attached to the project, though further details are being kept under wraps.
