Yifei Liu was the embodiment of a real-life Disney princess at the Mulan premiere on Monday night.

The Chinese actress takes on the titular role in director Niki Caro’s upcoming live-action remake of the 1998 animated classic of the same name, with the film following a young maiden who disguises herself as a male warrior in order to save her father.

Stepping out at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for the feature’s debut, Liu dazzled in a strapless gold ballgown with a long train and delicate embroidery from Elie Saab.

She accessorised the look with Chaumet jewellery, and had her hair styled into tumbling waves.

Ming-Na Wen, who voiced Mulan in the original movie, also opted for a dramatic ballgown for the night. The star chose a stunning number made from blue and gold fabric by Mark Zunino and topped off the ensemble with a touch of light blue eyeshadow on her eyelids and sparkly drop earrings.

Elsewhere, Liu’s co-star Donnie Yen looked handsome in a classic tuxedo, Jet Li rocked a black suit, Yoson An opted for an Ermenegildo Zegna outfit, and Jason Scott Lee chose a classic navy blue suit.

And Christina Aguilera certainly made a splash in a pink and red outfit from Galia Lahav. The singer, who has recorded an updated version of the song Reflection for the Mulan soundtrack as well as new tune Loyal Brave True, topped off her look by adding pink streaks through her platinum blonde updo.

Moana star Auli’i Cravalho opted for the pink theme too, selecting an Azzi & Osta dress, while Lana Condor rocked a blue jumpsuit with gold sequin detailing from Antonio Berardi.

Among the other celebrities showing their support for the film included Chrissy Metz, Jaimie Alexander, Alexis Knapp, Kimora Lee Simmons, and Jordin Sparks.

Christina Aguilera has recorded new material for Disney’s upcoming live-action Mulan.

The Genie in a Bottle hitmaker made the surprise announcement during her Xperience residency show in Las Vegas on Wednesday night, according to editors at Entertainment Weekly.

“The live-action Mulan is coming out by the way. You have to go see it. I recorded a new Reflection and new material for the movie. I’ve been working on that, but this is the original,” she told the crowd, before launching into the hit tune.

Reflection, written by Matthew Wilder and David Zippel, was performed onscreen in the 1998 original animated classic by Broadway star Lea Salonga, but Aguilera released a version of the song as her first-ever single, which launched her pop career at the age of 17.

The upcoming remake stars newcomer Liu Yifei as the titular character, alongside Jason Scott Lee and Jet Li, and follows the story of a young Chinese woman who disguises herself as a male warrior and joins the army in order to save her ailing father.

Director Niki Caro previously explained her version doesn’t include any musical numbers but insisted she honours the original Oscar-nominated soundtrack in a different way.

“I mean, back to the realism question – we don’t tend to break into song when we go to war. Not that I’m saying anything against the animation,” the filmmaker said at a press presentation, reported Digital Spy. “The songs are brilliant, and if I could squeeze them in there, I would have. But we do honour the music from the animation in a very significant way.”

Mulan hits cinemas from 25 March.

Christina Aguilera rocked a risque Viktor & Rolf dress as she attended the design duo’s recent show at Paris Couture Week.

The 38-year-old singer wore an oversized tulle trenchcoat from the designers’ spring 2019 collection printed with the message, “F**k This I’m Going to Paris.”

Aguilera was in the city as she played her first gig in more than 10 years in the French capital at the AccorHotels Arena.

She hit the Jean Paul Gaultier show first, and arrived in style dressed head-to-toe in a black and white kimono-style outfit designed by the Frenchman himself.

She turned heads in the silk kimono – which was covered with the words “Gaultier” hidden throughout – black corset belt and thigh-high boots, with her hair scraped up into a high bun.

The Genie in a Bottle hitmaker also sported knuckle dusters adorned with the word “Gaultier” across two hands.

Aguilera then made a surprise appearance at Viktor + Rolf’s show wearing the oversized tulle trenchcoat, and cheekily posed for paparazzi, and took a series of selfies as she was sat on the front row.

Joined by her stylist Karen Clarkson, Aguilera was seated next to American singer Poppy, who is a big fan of the iconic popstar.

“I’m going to have to get a picture,” she gushed to WWD. “I think she’s so great.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race star Miss Fame was also in attendance at the couture show – wearing the “No Photos Please” dress from Viktor + Rolf’s spring 2019 collection – actor Ian Bohen, who was there with his Teen Wolf co-stars, Holland Roden and Tyler Hoechlin.

Sean Astin once hoped to direct a Fantastic Four movie starring Christina Aguilera.

The actor shared the story during a recent appearance at the Amazing Comic-Con in Las Vegas, and revealed that he took his idea to bosses at 20th Century Fox after finishing The Lord of the Rings saga, in which he played Samwise Gamgee, in 2003.

Astin even tracked down a number of scripts that were developed by the studio over the years – including one from filmmaker Chris Columbus – and eventually lined up a meeting with Kevin Feige, who at the time was in charge of physical production at Marvel Studios.

“I was just starring in Lord of the Rings so there was a moment where you could just call people. And I said, ‘Listen, is there any way in the world that you’d consider me to direct Fantastic Four?’ And he was like, ‘Well, I don’t know.’ I said, ‘So are you saying there’s zero chance? Zero? No chance? 100 per cent not gonna do it?’ He says, ‘Well, I’m not gonna say zero per cent…'” he stated.

Astin then met with Tom Rothman, the head of 20th Century Fox at the time, and pitched his Fantastic Four idea – with Aguilera as superhero Sue Storm.

“I remember I was trying to meet with Christina Aguilera, I thought she’d be great as Sue Storm. It was an amazing time, it was an insane time,” the 48-year-old commented, before recalling the less-than-enthusiastic response he received from the studio boss.

“(Rothman) looks at me and he’s like, ‘What are you doing here?’ I said, ‘I want to direct this movie.’ He goes, ‘Alright, well, this meeting is premature. We’ve ordered another script. It’s due in three weeks from now. And he said, ‘And I’ll let you read it.'”

Astin even approached Michael Chiklis and encouraged The Shield star to go for the part of the Thing, and later tried to convince Cameron Diaz to play Sue Storm.

“(Diaz) was like, ‘Wait, how long do I have to be in the make-up?’ And I was like, ‘Well, maybe a while.’ She said, ‘Yeah, I don’t want to do that,'” he added.

Sadly for The Lord of the Rings star, his beloved Fantastic Four project didn’t pan out, as Fox enlisted the filmmaking services of Tim Story, who directed the 2005 feature, starring Jessica Alba as Sue Storm, Ioan Gruffudd as Reed Richards, Chris Evans as The Human Torch, and Chiklis as the Thing.

Winnie Harlow has celebrated 25 years of MAC’s Viva Glam initiative by recreating RuPaul’s iconic campaign.

Back in 1994, executives at the U.S. cosmetics giant launched the very first Viva Glam lipstick to help raise money and awareness for HIV/AIDS, with drag icon RuPaul fronting the accompanying marketing imagery, which featured the slogan, “I am the MAC girl!”

Now, brand bosses have tapped Winnie to star in a new campaign marking the anniversary, with the Canadian model paying homage to the original by sporting red leather boots and corset.

“SURPRISE!! THANK YOU @MACCosmetics for not only allowing me to be the new face of MAC Viva Glam, but using my RuPaul Halloween costume inspo (inspiration) creative for the campaign!” the 24-year-old captioned a snap of the updated campaign on her Instagram page on Monday (15Apr19), referring to when she channelled RuPaul’s racy look for Heidi Klum’s annual Halloween party last year.

“I worked hard to pull this look and shoot together with my team, inspired by one of the greatest charitable campaigns from 1994 (the year I was born), and I’m excited to announce MAC is using it for the newest Viva Glam campaign. If you know me, you know make-up is a love of mine so I’m speechless! There is no make-up campaign more ICONIC than the @MACcosmetics#VIVAGLAM campaign and I’m honoured to work with them as they celebrate their 25th anniversary of Viva Glam.”

And a MAC spokesperson added that they were delighted with Winnie’s version of the original photoshoot.

“Talk about a #throwback. Supermodel @winnieharlow recreates the iconic first-ever #VIVAGLAM campaign! A self-described VIVA GLAM super-fan, Winnie celebrates the irreverence, outrageous style and irrepressible love of life VIVA GLAM has been serving since 1994,” they wrote on social media.

MAC continues to promote the Viva Glam range, with the full RRP less any taxes donated to non-profit organisations that they believe can make a meaningful impact on health, rights and equality. The company has also relaunched the original Viva Glam I lipstick, a deep red, as well as pinkish-beige mauve Viva Glam II, and Viva Glam III, a muted plum shade, which are all priced at $18.50 (£17.50).

In the two decades since RuPaul first appeared in the campaign, many celebrities have appeared in promotions, including Lady Gaga, Elton John, Nicki Minaj, Christina Aguilera, and Miley Cyrus.

Oscar winner Natalie Portman has signed up to advise wannabe actors on honing their craft as part of a new online masterclass.

The Black Swan star will share her unique approach to acting as part of the $90 (£68) class.

“Acting is a joyful experience. It’s the act of empathy and play,” the actress said. “You should be free to be creative, try new things and make mistakes. That is how I learned.

“In this class, I’m excited to share what I’ve pieced together over 25 years as an actress – things that have worked for me, things that I’ve seen work well for others, and things I figured out myself.”

In her MasterClass, Portman will “share her many approaches to acting for the screen” and “teach students how building a character map” – a technique she finds useful as she’s understanding a character’s journey.

The star will also show students how to work with the director and camera to “create stronger performances”, and she’ll also help aspiring actors perfect the “fine line between taking direction while bringing your own ideas to the table”.

During the classes, Natalie will use her own case studies from Black Swan and Jackie, explaining how she researches characters for both historical and fictional roles, how she builds the physicality and the consciousness of the character and how she defines the “voice and nuances of dialect for different roles”, while demonstrating training exercises with her dialect coach.

“Natalie is thrilling,” said David Rogier, co-founder and CEO of MasterClass. “She approaches each role with a ferociousness and artistry that simply make her one of the best actresses of her generation – and she’s done it without formal training. Her class dives into the craft in ways no other class has done – teaching you how to create the career you want and to understand everything from character mapping, to dialect, to responding to your sets to green screen acting. The class will blow you away.”

Portman joins the likes of Christina Aguilera, Samuel L. Jackson, Dustin Hoffman, and Steve Martin, who have also fronted online MasterClasses as part of the 14-year-old programme.

Christina Aguilera’s perfectly coiffed locks can now be copied at home as she has partnered with supermarket chain Lidl on a range of hair tools.

The blonde star has teamed with the German budget retailer on a line of super affordable hair styling accessories, including a hairdryer, an LED straightener, a mini-straightener, curling tongs, a 3-in-1 styling iron, a blower brush, and five hairbrushes to comb, detangle or blow-dry.

Products will range from $13-$22 (£10-£15), with fans in the U.S. able to snap up Christina’s offerings from 11 December (18), while U.K. residents will have to wait until 3 January for the products to land in store.

Lidl is no stranger to working with big-name stars; executives have been collaborating with model Heidi Klum on a fashion line since 2017, with the German native launching her fifth drop in September.

Mother-of-two Christina is already recognised in the beauty market for her perfumes, and she was previously acted as a spokeswoman for MAC’s VIVA Glam.

Once known for her bold hair and dramatic make-up, the 37-year-old unveiled a bare-faced look on the cover of Paper magazine earlier this year.

“I’ve always been someone that obviously loves to experiment, loves theatrics, loves to create a storyline and play a character in a video or through stage,” she told the magazine. “I’m a performer, that’s who I am by nature. But I’m at the place, even musically, where it’s a liberating feeling to be able to strip it all back and appreciate who you are and your raw beauty.”

Brie Larson braved the rain to take in Rodarte’s New York Fashion Week show on Sunday (09Sep18).

Sitting front row with an umbrella, Brie looked chic in high waisted red chequered trousers, teamed with a frilly blouse.

Whoopi Goldberg, fashion legend Grace Coddington and actress Rachel Brosnahan, the niece of late bag designer Kate Spade, also didn’t let the wet weather put them off sisters Laura and Kate Mulleavy’s spring/ summer 19 presentation, which was held at a cemetery on the Lower East Side. The show marked Rodarte’s return to the Big Apple after showing in Paris for the last few seasons.

Later on Sunday, Prabal Gurung showed off his latest line, with the Nepalese-American designer also attracting an A-list crowd.

Among the celebrity guests was the cast of smash hit film Crazy Rich Asians, Awkwafina, Gemma Chan and Henry Golding, Tiffany Haddish and Kelly Rowland. Camila Mendes, Karrueche Tran and Indya Moore also took in the new season trends.

Opening Ceremony was one of the last brands to show on day five of New York Fashion Week, with design duo Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, who presented their latest Kenzo collection via a short film on Friday, tapping Christina Aguilera to perform a surprise gig as models strutted their stuff.

As well as Christina belting out tunes, Lim and Leon also enlisted the help of drag artists, including RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Sasha Velour, Jiggly Caliente and Miss Fame for their show, which was watched by Nicki Minaj, Troye Sivan and Hayley Kiyoko.

Christina Aguilera was so determined to play a robotic prostitute in director Drake Doremus’ futuristic new movie she chased down the role and stunned the filmmaker with an audition tape.

The moviemaker admits he hadn’t started working on his cast wish list when he first heard the pop star was keen to portray brothel worker Jewels in Zoe, which will be one of the highlights of this year’s Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

And he admits her commitment to the role impressed him so much he couldn’t imagine anyone else playing the part.

“I’ve been really fortunate to have people read for me over the years and for this movie,” Doremus tells Entertainment Tonight. “I’m just trying to make the best movie I can and I try to cast the best person for the role and she was the best person. She won the role.”

It’s quite a transformation for Christina, who last appeared on the big screen in 2010 flop Burlesque – in Zoe, she’s a dark-haired robot confined to perform sexual pleasures in a futuristic brothel.

The quirky new film stars Ewan McGregor as a robotic engineer, who falls in love with an android.

Director Doremus admits he was floored by the performances of his robot leads in the film, played by Lea Seydoux and Theo James.

“He’s (James) really beautiful in the film,” Drake adds. “His and Lea’s performance reach a level of humanity and love that a lot of the humans don’t have or struggle to have.”

Zoe will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday (21Apr18).
