Alexa Chung has treated her social media followers to a star-studded throwback picture from the 2011 Met Gala.

The fashion designer and Next in Fashion host shared the star-studded snap from the prestigious event, letting her followers see the candid snap she took of Yoko Ono, Rihanna, Salma Hayek, Lauren Hutton, and Stella McCartney in the bathroom at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

“Ancient maybe even Blackberry photo of a Met Gala bathroom scene,” the 36-year-old captioned the post. “Yoko, Rihanna, Stella, Salma, Lauren. Solid line up.”

In the photo, the Umbrella hitmaker can be seen watching designer McCartney adjusting her black one-sleeved gown, which had a see-through lace side panel, as philanthropist and activist Ono talks while wearing custom Karl Lagerfeld.

Meanwhile, iconic supermodel Hutton can be seen rocking a Giorgio Armani ensemble and taking a drag of her cigarette, while Hayek looks directly into the camera wearing a nude Alexander McQueen gown.

Chung herself wore a short, sheer silver Christopher Kane yoke dress teamed with a matching clutch and black platform heels.

“Put this in the history books,” one Instagram commented on the snap, while another joked, “Somebody hang this in a museum.”

The model hasn’t been the only one to take pictures in the bathroom at the prestigious fashion event. At the time, ethical fashion campaigner Livia Firth also shared similar snaps from the toilets of the Met Gala, which featured Rihanna, Ono, McCartney, Hayek, Hutton, and British fashion journalist Hilary Alexander.

The 2020 Met Gala, which was due to take place in May, has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Lena Dunham doesn’t want to let her figure stop her from wearing bold and colourful designs.

The Girls actress enjoys wearing quirky and creative outfits and refuses to abide by the notion that women who aren’t sample size should be restricted to black clothing.

“In Hollywood, I feel like there’s this almost rule that if you’re not a sample size, you’re supposed to wear a black column gown and just go simple and surprise people with your hair, ” she told Vogue.com. “I don’t like that rule.”

Lena, who cites eccentric fashion stars Daphne Guinness and Isabella Blow as inspirations for her newfound flamboyant style, likes to select pieces which make her feel “really alive”, but also places importance on comfort.

“I love clothing,” she continued. “And when people notice that I love clothing, it feels really good. For me now, a peasant dress or a funny smocklike shift is just a basic. It’s so trite to say, but you don’t have to trade comfort for style. And there are days where I just need to be cosy, and I’ve had to figure out how to do that in a way that feels chic to me. It can be a challenge, but I’m figuring it out.”

The 33-year-old has become friends with designers such as Christopher Kane, who has a display of her paintings in his London store, and Marco Capaldo and Kikka Cavenati of 16Arlington, who recently cast her in their London Fashion Week runway show.

Lena was first introduced to the design duo by her stylist last year and they ended up outfitting her for the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood premiere in London.

“It’s my greatest joy to wear things that are a little bit funny,” she explained. “And what I love about Marco and Kikka is that they make something that fits your body beautifully, but also has a sense of humour. When I attended the Once Upon a Time premiere, I was like, ‘I look like a hot Muppet!'”

Rihanna’s Fenty fashion brand scooped the Urban Luxe prize at The Fashion Awards 2019 on Monday night.

The superstar launched her fashion venture in partnership with executives at luxury group Moet Hennessy – Louis Vuitton (LVMH) in May, with the line comprised of wearable separates, denim, accessories, and footwear.

Now, just seven months after unveiling her debut collection, Rihanna has been named as the top designer in the competition’s Urban Luxe category, beating out the likes of Alyx, Marine Serre, Martine Rose, and Moncler Genius.

The 31-year-old was presented with the award by Janet Jackson and Tyler, The Creator during a ceremony held at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Taking to Instagram following the exciting announcement, a Fenty representative commented that Rihanna and her entire team felt “honoured” by the accolade.

“Fenty’s chief executive officer and artistic director Robyn Rihanna Fenty is committed to reflect the understanding of female power as constantly evolving, multi-faceted, fun and free,” they wrote alongside a snap of the star in a seafoam green custom-made outfit from the label. “Since the launch in May, Fenty had the pleasure of working with incredible talents, forming a new archive of visual references focusing on the intersection between style, culture and identity. Fenty is a young brand with a powerful collective voice, shaped by the individuals behind it.”

The other big winners on the night were Bottega Veneta’s Daniel Lee, who was named Designer of the Year, British Designer of the Year for Womenswear, and Accessories Designer of the Year, while the Italian label was also feted Brand of the Year. Adut Akech was selected as Model of the Year, Dior Men’s Kim Jones won British Designer of the Year for Menswear, and Christopher Kane was bestowed with the new Designers’ Designer Award.

Officials at the British Fashion Council (BFC) have launched a new award for designers.

In the run-up to The Fashion Awards 2019, set to take place on 2 December at the Royal Albert Hall in London, council members have announced that they are introducing the Designers’ Designer Award. The award coincides with the establishment of the BFC Membership Programme and has been created to spotlight the British designer businesses that have made a global impact in the past year through creativity in product design, campaigns, and collaborations.

Those nominated for the 2019 prize are Christopher Kane for Christopher Kane, Jonathan Anderson for JW Anderson, Margaret Howell for Margaret Howell, Roksanda Ilincic for Roksanda, and Simone Rocha for Simone Rocha.

“The creativity shown over the past year by the winner of this award is considered to have moved the needle in increasing their positive brand perception in 2019,” a BFC representative commented.

Meanwhile, the BFC Membership Programme has been founded to support the BFC’s mission to encourage collaboration and inclusivity, inviting designers to come together in support of the fashion ecosystem.

When it comes to the other awards, Bottega Veneta, Gucci, Jacquemus, Loewe, and Prada have been nominated in the Brand of the Year category, while Gucci’s Alessandro Michele, Bottega Veneta’s Daniel Lee, JW Anderson and Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson, Dior Men’s Kim Jones, and Prada’s Miuccia Prada are all in the running for Designer of the Year.

Top models Adesuwa Aighewi, Adut Akech, Adwoa Aboah, Kaia Gerber, and Winnie Harlow are competing for the Model of the Year prize, while it was previously announced that Giorgio Armani will be bestowed with the Outstanding Achievement Award and Naomi Campbell will take home the Fashion Icon Award.

The Victoria’s Secret Angel and Sports Illustrated model was discovered in Budapest at the age of 13, and four years later, she made her Milan Fashion Week debut for Prada.

She’s since walked for the likes of Louis Vuitton, Vivienne Westwood, and Chanel, and has landed high-profile campaigns for H&M, Armani Exchange and L’Oreal Paris.

However, the 25-year-old considers fashion her job, not a personal interest, and told Fashionista she would rather wear clothes from the closet of her boyfriend, actor Dylan Sprouse.

“I’ve definitely learned a few things through 13 years of work, but fashion still doesn’t really excite me,” she candidly shared. “Sometimes when Dylan gets some stuff, I take it.”

She also revealed she is bored by shopping, and because she tries on so many clothes during photoshoots, she thinks of buying clothes as a chore.

“When I go shopping, I know what I need and I’ll just go into one or two stores. When I’m shopping, I feel like I’m working. I prefer to not even try things on. I’m just like, ‘that should look good’ and I’ll take it,” Barbara stated.

The Hungarian beauty lives in Brooklyn, New York, with former child star Dylan, and prefers simple styles and comfortable clothing.

“It doesn’t matter the brand. If it feels right on my body, I’ll take it. I usually go for something comfortable, casual but still sexy. The more simple it is, the sexier it looks,” she explained.

Despite walking for high-fashion houses on catwalks around the world, Palvin feels like an “outsider” in upscale luxury stores.

“New York is closer to my style than Paris. Paris can be too chic for me. New York has a little edginess, but still can be classy. I do love Chinatown and Brooklyn, like little stores. I don’t like to go to the rich area. I can’t do that. I feel like an outsider there,” she added.

Cate Blanchett has praised Giorgio Armani for teaching her how to appear effortlessly chic.

The Oscar-winning actress is a lover of fashion, and dazzles on the red carpet with pieces from the likes of Balenciaga, Valentino, Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane, Armani and Givenchy.

But it was her friendship with the 84-year-old Italian designer that prompted Blanchett to rethink her relationship with fashion.

“It should never be work. That’s something I learned from Mr. Armani. True chic is effortless, and it’s got to come from you,” she told InStyle.

And the Australian star is a big fan of rewearing clothes she’s worn in the past and doesn’t indulge in fast-fashion.

“It’s not what gets likes and views. So, yeah, I mean, I love fashion, I love costumes, and I’m also a great lover of rewearing things I’ve loved in the past,” the 50-year-old explained. “I would say my go-to is pretty much a well-pressed suit. Or a good pair of trousers.”

Blanchett has also mastered the fine art of applying make-up in a moving vehicle, and prefers a durable compact foundation, rather than liquid. Most days, she simply wears a touch of foundation, mascara and lipstick, and as the face of Giorgio Armani’s new perfume, Si Fiori, she always ensures to dab on some fragrance before stepping out.

However, when quizzed on her favourite smell, the mother-of-four had a very touching answer.

“It’s boring, but newborn babies. They’re just delicious. And so full of possibilities,” she gushed.

The New Zealand-born designer is known for dressing the regal and the royal, including The Crown’s Olivia Colman and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. But her London Fashion Week Fall/ Winter 19 show had a much less British feel, with Wickstead taking her inspiration from the Mafia, more specifically, Mary Corleone, played by Sofia Coppola in 1991 movie The Godfather Part III.

Mannish cuts dominated, with brown overcoats, a belted wool jumpsuit in the same chocolate shade, and suit trousers all with a distinct gangster flair to them.

“I was engrossed in the film! I don’t know how many times I watched it. A lot,” Wickstead said backstage, according to British Vogue.

“I wanted it to feel like that Sicilian gangster world, the lighting, the space, I even fell in love with the wicker chairs.”

Mobster glamour gave way to couture-esque gowns, in bold shades of yellow, green, blue and red. The glamorous pieces appeared in a variety of cuts, as well as colours, like a showstopping off-the-shoulder floor-sweeping red gown and a voluminous leopard print dress with a neckline slashed to the navel.

Christopher Kane also showed on Monday, showcasing his usual youthful edge in his latest collection.

Taking his inspiration from people’s personal fetishes, there were lots of shiny, fluffy and lacy fabrics on display. His “cupcake skirts” seen on a variety of dresses as peplums and as standalone skirts, were a highlight.

“Really pronounced. Lots of crinoline to make them more exaggerated. That shape is so good. That cupcake felt really good. That elevation, almost like a balloon,” he said of the cut.

On Tuesday, Zandra Rhodes Richard Quinn and Bethany Williams, the recipient of the second Queen Elizabeth II Prize for Design, will help bring London Fashion Week to a close.

Before leaving London though, the designer is planning plenty of festive activities in the English capital, including a trip to the ice-skating rink at Somerset House and an afternoon tea session at Claridge’s.

“The day itself will be spent at Gleneagles,” he smiled to British Vogue. “I’m excited to go back as I haven’t had a traditional Scottish Christmas in years – fingers crossed we don’t get snowed in.”

When it comes to his family Christmas tree, Kane, who runs his namesake label with sister Tammy, has his niece Bonnie on decoration duty.

“Colourful, loud and mixed with traditional tartans and metallics,” he said of his tree of choice. “I love full-on trees, loaded with personality.

“Christmas is about remembering the past, so little details like old decorations or those created with children make you appreciate the present.”

He’s also a sucker for a festive playlist, which he always has prepared in advance. His all-time favourite track is Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by Darlene Love.

And Kane’s love for this time of year led to bosses at fish eatery Scott’s, his neighbour on London’s Mount Street, calling on his expertise to decorate the front of the restaurant.

The London Fashion Week favourite went for neon icicles that hover above the heads of diners sitting on the terrace.

“I couldn’t say no when they approached me,” he shared. “We didn’t shy away from shine and sparkle; we embraced it.”

Tomas Maier’s namesake brand is reportedly set to cease operations.

The German designer established his label in 1997, with the company gaining investment from Kering bosses in 2013.

Just weeks after Maier announced that he was departing his post as creative director at Kering-owned brand Bottega Veneta after a 17-year stint, executives at the luxury conglomerate have confirmed that they are ending their other partnership too.

“Mr. Tomas Maier remains the owner of the Tomas Maier trademark,” a Kering spokesperson told WWD, adding that they would be looking to “safeguard employment, in coordination with local unions.”

The decision to shutter Maier’s label will affect between 20 and 30 employees with his two boutiques in Manhattan to close by the end of the year. Maier’s website will also cease operating, with it understood that appointments to view his resort 2018 have been cancelled.

Maier, who previously worked at Guy Laroche, Sonia Rykiel and Hermes, has not officially commented on his exit from Bottega or closure of his brand. British designer Daniel Lee has been named as his successor at the Italian label.

The news of Kering’s moves to close Maier’s brand comes as the group, helmed by chairman and chief executive officer Francois-Henri Pinault, shared last Thursday that they were in talks with designer Christopher Kane for him to buy back his stake after taking an investment in 2013.

Kering, which controls fashion houses such as Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen and Brioni, also managed Stella McCartney’s brand for 17 years, until the British designer made moves to regain full control back in March.

Christopher Kane is in talks to buy back his namesake fashion brand from Kering.

The Scottish designer studied at Central Saint Martins in London before founding his label alongside his sister Tammy in 2006, with celebrity fans of his creations including Lara Stone, Alexa Chung and Kate Bosworth.

While Kane agreed to sell a 51 per cent stake in his company to fashion conglomerate Kering in 2013, he is now in negotiations to take back ownership.

“Kering is announcing that discussions are underway with Mr. Christopher Kane about the conditions in which the designer could take back full control of the eponymous brand,” a representative for Kering said in a statement on Thursday (21Jun18). “Christopher Kane and Kering wish to continue to collaborate with the aim of achieving a gradual and harmonious transition.”

Neither Kane nor Kering chairman and chief executive officer Francois-Henri Pinault have commented further on the deal.

Kering executives plan to list the stake under “non-current assets held for sale and discontinued operations” in its half-yearly accounts to June 30, set to be published on July 26.

In addition to Kane’s label, Kering controls fashion houses such as Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen and Brioni.

The Paris-based luxury giant also managed Stella McCartney’s brand for 17 years, until the designer made moves to regain full control of her brand back in March.

Previously, Kane spoke of his desire to spearhead a revival of British high fashion.

“I don’t think anyone knows what good or bad taste is,” he told Porter magazine last August. “If designers don’t go out there and change perceptions, then where it’s the newness? Where is the thrill in buying something and wearing it? We all need to put more of a thrill back into fashion.”
