Emilia Clarke turned down the lead role in Fifty Shades of Grey because she didn’t want to get naked onscreen again.
The British actress was among the stars considered to play Anastasia Steele in the 2015 adaptation of E.L. James’ erotic novel, with the film directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.
However, Emilia has now shared that she rejected an offer to portray the leading lady as she was sick of being asked questions about disrobing for hit TV series Game of Thrones, in which she played Daenerys Targaryen.
“Well, Sam (Taylor-Johnson) is a magician. I love her, and I thought her vision was beautiful. But the last time that I was naked on camera on (Game of Thrones) was a long time ago, and yet it is the only question that I ever get asked because I am a woman,” she said during The Hollywood Reporter’s Drama Actress Roundtable, which also included Patricia Arquette, Michelle Williams, Christine Baranski, Danai Gurira and Niecy Nash. “And it’s annoying as hell and I’m sick and tired of it because I did it for the character – I didn’t do it so some guy could check out my t**s, for God’s sake. So, that coming up, I was like, ‘I can’t.'”
Emilia went on to explain that she also feared being “pigeonholed” in Hollywood.
“I did a minimal amount and I’m pigeonholed for life, so me saying yes to that, where the entire thing is about sensuality and sex and being naked and all of that stuff, I was just like, ‘No way am I going to voluntarily walk into that situation,’ and then never be able to look someone in the eye and be like, ‘No, you can’t keep asking me this question,'” the 32-year-old commented.
Anastasia was ultimately played by Dakota Johnson, while the part of Christian Grey went to Jamie Dornan. The duo reprised their roles for the two follow-up films in the franchise; 2017’s Fifty Shades Darker and 2018’s Fifty Shades Freed.

Emilia Clarke has admitted that she has no regrets over the amount of nudity in the early seasons of Game of Thrones.
The British actress, who stars in the hit HBO series as Daenerys Targaryen, confessed to OK! magazine that she wouldn’t change the scenes because they’re key to understanding the struggles that the character goes through in the male-dominated world of the series.
“We needed to see the struggles that Daenerys has been through to have any empathy for her,” the 32-year-old reflected. “You had to see it, you couldn’t just have it explained.”
The Solo: A Star Wars Story actress went on to suggest that there’s “not one part of the show that she’d go back and redo,” and argued that although people say the nude scenes in the show objectified women and reinforced gender inequalities, she believes that they serve an alternative purpose.
“It’s a show that puts women in a place of power and I think that’s unique,” she said of the agency of the show’s female characters. “Having an idea, believing in it enough to have people back you and to promote yourself as someone who can lead bodies of people… is beautiful.”
Emilia also highlighted that issues surrounding gender parity aren’t exclusive to the series, and encouraged viewers to consider the problematic elements of the fantasy show in relation to everyday life.
“While in Game of Thrones’ fantastical world the gender divide is what it is, in our society it is also what it is,” she considered.

Emilia Clarke is taking a break from Hollywood now that she’s wrapped the final season of Game of Thrones.
Fans of the hit fantasy drama still have nearly a year to wait for the eighth and final season to air, though Emilia and her co-stars, including Kit Harington, Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner, have now finished filming.
While Emilia has juggled movie roles with her star turn as Dragon Queen Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, she’s ready to take a mini-break from acting.
“That’s what I am figuring out just now,” Emilia told British newspaper Metro on the subject of her future plans.
“It’s difficult, people ask me what I will be doing next – I’m like, ‘I’d like to have a nap, for a little while!'”
Emilia was recently seen in Star Wars spin-off Solo: A Star Wars Story, and has also had lead roles in Me Before You and Terminator Genisys.
And before her hiatus began, she managed to shoot upcoming action thriller Above Suspicion, Phillip Noyce’s retelling of a real-life tale that shook the foundations of America’s top law enforcement agency, ending in the first-ever conviction of an FBI agent for murder. Jack Huston, Johnny Knoxville and Thora Birch co-star.
And as well as catching up on some much-needed rest, 31-year-old Emilia is also lending her support to Britain’s National Health Service (NHS), after being appointed an ambassador for the Royal College of Nursing.
“It’s something I’ve been wanting to throw light on for a number of years,” she said. “It’s just now, at the end of the show, that I see a chance, I now have a platform that I can actually speak from.”
