Gabrielle Union confessed she’s learning more about being a woman as she gives advice to her transgender stepdaughter Zaya.

Back in February, the Bring It On star’s husband Dwyane Wade announced his 13-year-old would be using the pronouns she/her, and in a new interview with Shape magazine, Gabrielle said she’s been working hard to set a good example to Zaya.

“I love that in our household there are so many different ways of expressing ourselves,” the 47-year-old explained. “And watching Zaya clock all of it. Right? That there’s no one way to be a woman. There’s no one way to be a Black woman. There’s no one way to be beautiful. There’s no one way to dress or to love your body.”

And Gabrielle is also learning from Zaya, and recalled an incident in which she tried to teach her stepdaughter how to shave her armpits.

“Zaya was like, ‘But Amandla Stenberg doesn’t shave her armpits. And I was like, ‘No, she does not!’” she laughed, referencing the non-binary American actress, and said she was forced to examine her own beliefs about gender.

“You are a woman because you are. Because that is your identity,” Gabrielle added.

Zaya was behind the lens of her Samsung smartphone as she photographed her stepmother for the Shape cover shoot, and the L.A.’s Finest star was curious to see how the teenager saw her.

“I’m just interested to see myself through Zaya’s eyes,” she explained. “I think that’s really actually… really interesting. Because I trust her. And she has a story to tell.”

Gabrielle Union has insisted her daughter Kaavia James has better style than she does.

The Being Mary Jane actress and her basketball player husband Dwyane Wade welcomed their firstborn via surrogate in November last year, and since then, Gabrielle has documented her tot’s day-to-day life on social media.

However, in a new interview with People, she noted that her style confidence has taken a knock since Kaavia James made her arrival.

“Dwyane and I thought we knew how to serve a look until Kaavia James came through to show us how it’s done,” Gabrielle laughed. “Mama is just trying to keep up!”

Earlier this year, the America’s Got Talent judge launched a special baby collection named after her daughter with New York & Company, and also created easy-to-wear pieces so she could twin with the nine-month-old.

Now, she’s focusing on her chic I’m Perfect capsule collection with the U.S. label, and invited women she’s inspired by – including basketball player Candace Parker, actress Dania Ramirez, model Isis King and dancer Nia Sioux – to appear in the accompanying campaign.

And the star is so excited about her previous collaborations with New York & Company, she’s keeping a few garments to show her daughter when she’s older.

“I can’t wait to show her the pieces from her own Kaavi James collection which were inspired by her,” the 46-year-old shared. “Kaavia has a very distinct personality and she’s very active, so often what I think looks great isn’t practical for her. While I love twinning with her, I cannot wait to encourage her to express her individuality.”

Gabrielle Union fired back at an Instagram follower who suggested she “dressed her age”.

The 46-year-old actress is known for showcasing her stunning figure in sexy ensembles, and recently courted attention in a black dress and sneakers combination. While many fans approved of the look, others turned up their nose at it, with one commenting: “Can you dress your age please.”

The remark caused Gabrielle to see red, and the screen star sarcastically replied: “Oh I’d loooove to hear what you think is age appropriate. Please gimme allll the age appropriate fashion advise (sic) I didn’t know I needed in my life.”

In her original upload, new mum Gabrielle, who welcomed daughter Kaavia last month (Nov18) with husband Dwyane Wade via surrogate, got reflective about the end of 2018 and the start of a new year.

“All my unfinished work/projects from 2018 looking at me as I prepare my vision board for 2019 like… And a glimpse of my upcoming @nyandcompany eat/pray/love/travel/chill collection available next week! Sneakers by @lining.official,” she wrote.

The Being Mary Jane star has been working with retail brand New York & Company since August 2017.

She signed a multi-year contract with the company, which also has Eve Mendes on its roster, explaining at the time that she was keen to create an affordable fashion line.

“I wanted to offer on-trend fashion at affordable prices. That’s the bottom line,” she told WWD, explaining the price plan came into action after she was asked about her own outfits, only to tell others the pieces were extremely expensive.

“In that moment you say the price, you’re an a*shole. There’s got to be a way of creating fly, dope, on-trend, fashion-forward pieces for a much lower price, and that was my goal.”

Gabrielle Union is committed to teaching the boys in her family about beauty standards.

The actress is stepmother to husband Dwyane Wade’s sons Zaire, 16, Zion, 11, and Xavier, four, while the basketball player’s nephew Dahveon also lives in the family home.

Gabrielle is determined to educate the three eldest boys about the realities of colourism, and recently asked to see the Instagram profiles of the girls at school they had crushes on.

“Literally, probably about 10 girls I looked at had the same light skin, curly hair, tiny waist, butt, boobs – it was the same girl over and over again,” she said at Essence Festival’s AT&T Dream in Black Luncheon last weekend (07-08Jul18), as reported by Refinery29. “So I asked them to show me the most beautiful chocolate sister they’ve seen. They say there are none. I was like, ‘Why do they get exed out so fast?'”

The 45-year-old responded by showing the boys photos of American singer and actress Ryan Destiny, which prompted a very different reaction.

“They’re like, ‘Oh, she bad!’ But do you know how many Ryan Destinies there are?” Gabrielle asked. “I pull up every black model, women from all over the world, and they’re beautiful. But they don’t see the beauty unless it comes from an actress or a supermodel or a video vixen. They have to have somebody else tell them that a chocolate woman is attractive for them to believe it.”

The Girls Trip star pushed for diversity in the beauty industry by introducing Flawless, a line of hair-care products catered to people with textured hair, in 2017. However, she is sceptical of the increasing number of brands who support diversity rather than inclusion.

“To me, diversity is the seat at a table that is super tiny. Inclusion is letting you on the block and at the house – much less at the table,” she affirmed.
