Adam Sandler has found a silver lining in missing out on an Academy Award nomination.

The comedian received Best Actor buzz for his role in 2019 crime thriller Uncut Gems, but he was not on the shortlist for the category on Monday, when the list of Oscar nominees was released, revealing the race was between Leonardo DiCaprio for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Antonio Banderas for Pain and Glory, Adam Driver for Marriage Story, Joaquin Phoenix for Joker, and Jonathan Pryce for The Two Popes.

However, Sandler took to Twitter to prove to his fans that he had found a positive in the snub.

“Bad news: Sandman gets no love from the Academy. Good news: Sandman can stop wearing suits,” he wrote, before congratulating Kathy Bates, who played the mother of his character Bobby Boucher in 1998 sports comedy The Waterboy, for her Best Supporting Actress nomination.

“Congrats to all my friends who got nominated, especially Mama,” Sandler concluded the tweet, which featured a still of Bates.

The actress, who was nominated for her role in Clint Eastwood’s crime drama Richard Jewell, spotted his message and replied, “I love you my Bobby Boucher!!! You was robbed!! But Mama loves you!!! I learned a new urban slang word for you! You da GOAT (Greatest of All Time)!! Not the one we eat at home, Son.”

Bates joined many film fans on social media expressing their outrage at the 53-year-old’s rejection, including The Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood, who tweeted, “Truly baffled that Sandler wasn’t nominated and that Uncut Gems wasn’t acknowledged at all.”

Sandler had previously joked that he would make a deliberately bad film if he got snubbed at the Oscars, and his Just Go with It co-star Brooklyn Decker registered her interest in supporting the project, with her writing on Instagram: “If I’m not in this movie it will be a crime.”

The 92nd Academy Awards show will take place in Los Angeles on 9 February.

Zelda Williams and Chris Evans have shared their outrage over the news a CGI version of James Dean is to appear in a new movie.

The Hollywood icon, who died in a car crash in 1955 at the age of 24, will be “resurrected” for upcoming Vietnam War drama Finding Jack, with directors Anton Ernst and Tati Golykh using special effects to recreate Dean for the secondary lead character of Rogan.

The film, adapted from Gareth Crocker’s novel, focuses on the abandoned military dogs at the end of the controversial war in the 1960s, and the directors have obtained the rights from the actor’s family to use his image.

However, a number of people have criticised the project. Zelda, daughter of the late Robin Williams, took to Twitter to vent her anger at the “awful” decision to use Dean’s likeness 64 years after his death.

“Publicity stunt or not, this is puppeteering the dead for their ‘clout’ alone and it sets such an awful precedent for the future of performance. It’s bad taste & a bad call,” she fired. “What’s to stop a pharma from resurrecting (Charlie) Chaplin to sell pills, or casting (Lauren) Bacall in a bad action flick? A famous bombshell back for porn? If all it takes is money & a distant relative’s permission, the future is GRIM and full of corporate ghosts.”

She went on to explain that her family had restricted the exploitation of Robin’s image for 25 years following his death in 2014.

Captain America star Chris also waded into the outcry on Twitter and noted that he was concerned about the way the Finding Jack filmmakers may use special effects.

“This is awful. Maybe we can get a computer to paint us a new Picasso. Or write a couple new John Lennon tunes. The complete lack of understanding here is shameful,” he wrote.

Elijah Wood shared his fellow actors’ disapproval too and tweeted: “NOPE. this shouldn’t be a thing.”

While Devon Sawa, who had auditioned for a role in Finding Jack, commented on the casting of a deceased actor.

“They couldn’t give this role to an actual human?” he questioned.

Dakota Johnson appears to have undergone dental work to have her signature tooth gap closed.

The Fifty Shades of Grey actress is known for having a small space between her upper two front teeth, and in a video for Vanity Fair in 2017, even demonstrated how she could put various objects into the gap, including toothpicks, a credit card, a cherry stem, a twig and cash.

However, following Dakota’s appearance at The Peanut Butter Falcon premiere in Hollywood last Thursday night, eagle-eyed fans noticed that it looked like she had the gap closed entirely.

A close-up photo of the star smiling at the premiere appears to confirm the speculation, though the 29-year-old has yet to comment on whether or not she had a recent trip to the dentist.

In light of the transformation, a number of Dakota’s fans have taken to Twitter to express their thoughts on her new look.

One user wrote, “Logged on to find out that Dakota Johnson, the only person who should have a gap in their teeth, got rid of hers…,” while another asked, “Is grieving over Dakota Johnson fixing her tooth gap a valid reason to not work?”

Yet, a third commenter showed support for Dakota, and praised: “I just found out Dakota Johnson fixed her tooth gap and I’m kinda sad because that was like her brand but if it makes her feel better I’m all for it u go queen (sic).”

Elsewhere, followers posted video montages in honour of Dakota’s famed tooth gap.

Other celebrities known for having gap teeth include Anna Paquin, Elijah Wood, Lara Stone, Madonna, and even Dakota’s rumoured boyfriend, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.

The Peanut Butter Falcon, also starring Shia LaBeouf and Bruce Dern, is slated to open in U.S. cinemas on Friday.
