Gabrielle Union is committed to teaching the boys in her family about beauty standards.

The actress is stepmother to husband Dwyane Wade’s sons Zaire, 16, Zion, 11, and Xavier, four, while the basketball player’s nephew Dahveon also lives in the family home.

Gabrielle is determined to educate the three eldest boys about the realities of colourism, and recently asked to see the Instagram profiles of the girls at school they had crushes on.

“Literally, probably about 10 girls I looked at had the same light skin, curly hair, tiny waist, butt, boobs – it was the same girl over and over again,” she said at Essence Festival’s AT&T Dream in Black Luncheon last weekend (07-08Jul18), as reported by Refinery29. “So I asked them to show me the most beautiful chocolate sister they’ve seen. They say there are none. I was like, ‘Why do they get exed out so fast?'”

The 45-year-old responded by showing the boys photos of American singer and actress Ryan Destiny, which prompted a very different reaction.

“They’re like, ‘Oh, she bad!’ But do you know how many Ryan Destinies there are?” Gabrielle asked. “I pull up every black model, women from all over the world, and they’re beautiful. But they don’t see the beauty unless it comes from an actress or a supermodel or a video vixen. They have to have somebody else tell them that a chocolate woman is attractive for them to believe it.”

The Girls Trip star pushed for diversity in the beauty industry by introducing Flawless, a line of hair-care products catered to people with textured hair, in 2017. However, she is sceptical of the increasing number of brands who support diversity rather than inclusion.

“To me, diversity is the seat at a table that is super tiny. Inclusion is letting you on the block and at the house – much less at the table,” she affirmed.

Gabrielle Union decided to lop off her long locks because she was ready for a “fresh and new” look.

The Breaking In actress took to Instagram on Thursday (21Jun18) to upload a snap of her latest hairstyle, with the photograph depicting her with a chic layered bob.

In the caption, Gabrielle explained that her look was “not a wig or a weave” and her longtime hairstylist Larry Sims has since divulged that the star had been wanting to experiment with her tresses for a while.

“Recently, Gabrielle was a little under the weather and is just coming out of it now. She said, ‘I want to feel new and fresh and do something we’ve never done before,'” he told Refinery29. “And she wanted to go short on her actual natural hair.”

Gabrielle appeared thrilled with her new cut, sharing a short video of her showing off her style and dancing around on her social media pages.

However, Larry made a point of noting to the 45-year-old that short hair would require regular trims and a different set of products.

“Slapping on a wig isn’t the same. A real cut requires maintenance and upkeep,” the hair expert explained, adding that his client wasn’t the slightest bit nervous. “We didn’t go super super short. It is a chop – like three inches – and she’s never had her hair hug the back of her neck, done with the razors. Even with that, she didn’t freak out. At all.”

In addition, Larry stated that he was inspired by images of people in Japan sporting razor cuts as well as supermodel Linda Evangelista’s signature style.

To keep the hairdo in tip-top condition, he applied some of the products from the Flawless by Gabrielle Union haircare line, including the Oil Treatment.

Gabrielle Union fronting unretouched photo campaign to celebrate body confidence

Actress Gabrielle Union has encouraged fans to share their unedited swimsuit selfies online as part of a new charity push for body-positive brand Aerie.

The Bad Boys II beauty took to Instagram on Monday night (11Jun18) to promote the American Eagle Outfitters’ #AerieReal campaign, through which followers can help to raise up to $25,000 (£18,700) for the U.S. National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) simply by posting their natural snaps on social media.

“Love the swim you’re in!,” Gabrielle captioned a series of Instagram images, in which she poses make-up free in a high-cut black-and-white one-piece.

“Swimsuit season can trigger a lot of insecurities… cellulite, ingrown hairs, scars, body diversity, ageism, you name it!” she explained. “But it’s important to always embrace, own, and love every inch of yourself… imperfections and all! OWN what your mama gave ya (sic)!

“For every unretouched photo you share with #AerieREAL, @Aerie will donate $1 (up to $25K) to @NEDA.”

Gabrielle isn’t the only famous face to embrace the Aerie way of life – Riverdale actress Lili Reinhart has also uploaded a shot of herself sporting a low-cut green one-piece with a pair of denim shorts for the #AerieReal campaign.

“Some days are harder than others to accept your body for how it is,” she wrote beside the image. “The ‘ideal body’ is often presented to us as looking one particular way… but that’s a concept I hope to help change. There is not one shape that’s more beautiful than another. We should be exposed to all body types in advertising and media. That’s why I have so much appreciation for Aerie and their representation of all shapes and sizes in their campaigns.”

Lili’s post emerged days after facing her own body shaming experience online, after sparking speculation she was pregnant with boyfriend Cole Sprouse’s baby by displaying a slightly rounded stomach.

The 21-year-old quickly shot down the claims, insisting she had just been bloated at the time, and last week (ends08Jun18), she admitted the baby talk had been “really upsetting”.

Prabal Gurung has added an atelier line to his offerings.

Nepalese-American designer Gurung is a favorite among the A-list, and was the designer of choice for numerous celebrities at the 2018 Met Gala on Monday (07May18), including Gabrielle Union, Diane Kruger, Ashley Graham and Hailee Steinfeld, who all stunned in Atelier Prabal Gurung.

“This has been building for a while,” Gurung told Vogue of his new venture. “We’ve always taken a couture approach to our (ready-to-wear) designs, and we make the majority of our collections in New York. I have a big private-client business, too, so we’ve been making custom, made-to-measure gowns for them.”

The designer made a total of eight gowns for the Met Gala, with Ming Xi, Eiza Gonzalez, Deepika Padukone and Hikari Mori also wearing the new pieces. All the dresses from his debut Atelier capsule are available now via trunk shows at Bergdorf Goodman and Moda Operandi.

Opting for bold shades of yellow, green and pink, among others, Gurung consulted with each star about her dress, which had to fit in with this year’s theme: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.

Reflecting on the night, the designer shared: “It was a full-circle moment for me. I walked the carpet with Diane, and I was looking around (thinking about how I was) really bullied in my Catholic boy’s school. My escape was fashion and sketching, so to be at this Met Gala, it almost felt like the things I’d sketched had come to life and were walking right in front of me. It was surreal.”

New mum Jessica Alba has refreshed her look by chopping off her lacklustre “pregnancy hair”.

The Fantastic Four beauty kicked off 2018 as a mother-of-three after giving birth to her son Hayes, and on Wednesday (07Mar18), she debuted her chic new cut online after turning to celebrity hairstylist Chad Wood to trim a few inches from her long, brunette locks.

Jessica shared before-and-after snaps side-by-side on Instagram and asked fans for feedback.

“This happened,” she captioned the post. “thx (thanks) @chadwoodhair for the awesome #haircut- it feels sooo good to shed the pregnancy hair. Whaddaya think (sic)?”

The actress was flooded with compliments from followers, who gave the star’s new cut a big thumbs up.

Jessica’s trip to the hair salon came shortly after pushing herself through her third workout session of the day in a bid to lose the pregnancy pounds and gear up for her acting return in the planned Bad Boys TV spin-off.

The 36-year-old, who is also mum to daughters Honor, nine, and Haven, six, posted a pair of photos with her sweaty workout buddies after their spin class, and wrote, “3rd workout of the day for me -man it was hard, but oh so good…”

Earlier in the day, Alba had also hit the gym with her Bad Boys co-star Gabrielle Union, who is known for her fit physique.

“I was feeling really good about myself until I saw this hottie come in here with all of her fashions and her abs and her dimples,” Jessica quipped in an Instagram Story video, as she turned the camera on Gabrielle, who was riding an exercise bike.

Alba is teaming the intense exercise sessions with a new healthy eating plan, thanks to “amazing nutritionist” Kelly LeVeque, to help her get back into tip-top shape.

“Starting today I’m going to make healthier food choices…,” she told fans in early February (18). “I just had a baby, and it’s hard to get back in the saddle, but I think it’s time.”

Chanel Iman wore two custom Zuhair Murad gowns on her wedding day.

The model married National Football League player Sterling Shepard on Saturday (03Mar18) in a ceremony held at The Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles.

With a successful fashion career under her belt, which includes runway appearances for top brands such as Burberry, Tom Ford and Gucci, Chanel had plenty of choices when it came to her wedding dress but settled on one of Murad’s white gowns with floral appliques and a cape accent for her nuptials.

“I never really envisioned wearing something like that for my wedding, but the moment I put it on, we all loved it. It’s so chic and unusual but also something that felt a little vintage,” she told U.S. Vogue, adding that she was drawn to the back of the dress as much as she was the front. “The fact that it was interesting from the back was something that I really loved, as guests tend to have that view for a portion of the service, something (that) I think often gets overlooked.”

Chanel’s long-time stylist Anita Patrickson matched her first dress with one of Murad’s veils and diamond earrings from Neil Lane. And for the reception, the fashion star changed into a blush coloured tulle number which allowed her to hit the dance floor alongside guests including fellow model Jourdan Dunn as well as friends Chrissy Teigen and Gabrielle Union.

“Most importantly, I wanted to be comfortable and able to dance,” the 27-year-old shared of the gown, which is known as the Christie design. “The pink and the deep V-neckline really appealed to my ‘girlier’ side, and it’s a shape I really love wearing.”

Chanel’s bridesmaids sported chic white dresses from Watters, while Sterling rocked a classic black suit from Hugo Boss.

Actor Chadwick Boseman bought out a screening of his new superhero movie Black Panther in his South Carolina hometown as a treat for underprivileged youths.

The Marvel blockbuster has continually broken box office records since its release last week (ends16Feb18), and Chadwick, who portrays the titular character, wanted to make sure kids in his old stomping ground of Anderson wouldn’t miss out on the fun by covering the costs of their theatre visit.

Tammy Hembree, senior manager of the Amstar Stadium 14 venue, where the screening was held, told USA Today 312 youths were invited to view the movie for free on Saturday (17Feb18).

She reveals Chadwick’s own family and friends also came out in force, filling 460 seats at two of the cinema’s screenings to support their hometown hero.

Chadwick wasn’t the only star to purchase Black Panther tickets for those less fortunate – actress Octavia Spencer, and rappers T.I., Migos member Offset, and Lil Yachty performed similar acts of generosity for fans across the U.S., too.

Actress Gabrielle Union and her husband, basketball ace Dwyane Wade, also teamed up with officials at youth organisations in Cleveland, Ohio, Miami, Florida, Omaha, Nebraska, and Watts, Los Angeles to offer kids in each city the opportunity to check out the film for free.

In a weekend (17-18Feb18) post on her Instagram page, Gabrielle wrote, “Black Panther is more than a movie, it’s a movement. We partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland, Miami, Omaha & Watts to send 100 kids from each club to see #BlackPanther & we gave each club a donation to help provide opportunities for the children they serve in our communities. If you can be a hero in someone’s life, be one.”

The huge support for Black Panther, which also stars Michael B. Jordan and Lupita Nyong’o, helped the film bank a stunning $201.7 million (£144.1 million) in its first three days on release in North America, making it the fifth-highest debut in box office history.
