Betsey Johnson is relieved she has a “second chance at life” following heart surgery.

The energetic fashion designer checked into a Los Angeles hospital last month for the major operation, and appears to be on the road to recovery after performing the splits on the red carpet during her first public appearance since her surgery.

Speaking about her near-death experience at the annual Women’s Guild Cedars-Sinai gala, the 76-year-old carried a thank you note to the “beautiful people” and doctors who she credits with saving her.

Calling her miracle recovery a “second chance at life”, she said she owed her life to the medical team at Cedars-Sinai.

“Before my heart was driving me crazy. It was loud, irregular and really screwed up. That is when I started having seizures and falling down,” Betsey candidly told MailOnline.

“And that is when my business partner said, ‘Betsey I am going to find you the best hospital and doctor on the planet’. So she found me Cedars-Sinai and how she found me Doctor Trento.”

Despite undergoing a huge operation, Betsey is back on her feet, and confessed she has a renewed zest for life.

“I feel like the movie where they put a new heart in the vampire and let’s party. I feel it is what my heart needed,” she joked. “It is very happy, my heart. (Before) it was not happy.

“I do believe it boils down to the hospital and the people and my doctor who is brilliant and that helps. I was just f**king happy to wake up. I didn’t think I would come through this alive. So when I woke up I just knew, ‘I am alive’, and I was very happy.”

The quirky fashion star is also a long-term breast cancer survivor.
