Ian Somerhalder had to achieve his character’s beefed-up new look in V Wars in the space of two weeks.
The actor’s character Dr. Luther Swann undergoes a physical transformation to become a muscular, formidable-looking warrior in the finale episode of the Netflix vampire thriller.
In a short video about his new look, Somerhalder explained that by the time they came up with the storyline, he was 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) underweight and a “tired skinny mess” because producing the series was so taxing, and he had two weeks to turn it around.
He called upon Jance Footit, his trainer from The Vampire Diaries, who put him on a strict diet and tough exercise regime.
“He immediately put me on a clean and strict but yummy diet of protein, fats, vegetables, good carbohydrates and loads of water. Five or six meals per day and all of the vitamins to feed rapid muscle growth!” Somerhalder recalled.
“With 10 days to go, I was not feeling very confident that I was looking like the new Swann 2.0. so Jance met me in Toronto with this one goal in mind. His method was incredible,” he explained. “It is simple: Train four days hard. Rest four days and shoot or compete. Only four days of training BUT three-four times per day! The goal is to train with so much frequency in those first few days to produce so much damage to the muscle they have only one thing to do: grow. Rapidly.”
The 41-year-old admitted the “first few days were brutal” because he was juggling training with his many other duties on the show, but he managed to achieve his goal.
“Come day of shooting, Swann was ready for the camera. I put on eight pounds of solid muscle in less than two weeks my arms had grown almost two inches. Swann looked like someone had temporarily inflated him with a bicycle pump. And that’s how Swann will stay for a good while,” Somerhalder concluded, adding that his new look will continue in season two.
V Wars season one is streaming on Netflix now.

Nikki Reed launched her lifestyle brand after noticing a gap in the market for ethical and sustainable products.
The actress has partnered with Freedom of Animals founder, Morgan Bogle, on a venture named BaYou With Love, with the company offering up eco-friendly ranges of jewellery, skincare, and apparel.
While Nikki has been interested in protecting resources and abiding by a healthy lifestyle for some time, it wasn’t until she was pregnant with her two-year-old daughter Bodhi, who she shares with actor husband Ian Somerhalder, that she decided to learn more.
“Once I became aware of my impact on the planet, I wanted the pieces I wore to come with a story that was good for the environment. I launched BaYou With Love, jewellery, skincare, and apparel line, to create sustainable and ethical products that I couldn’t find in the marketplace,” she said in an interview for the September 2019 issue of U.S. Shape magazine. “I was pregnant at the time I was dreaming up the company, and like all soon-to-be mamas, I was searching for products that were extra clean for my body and my conscience. When I couldn’t find them, I decided to try and make them.”
Last year, Nikki announced she was partnering with executives at Dell to transform gold recycled from old technology into products for the collection, and she is thrilled with the response to the gorgeous new products.
“Understandably, people don’t want to compromise on quality or luxury when they spend their hard-earned money, yet they desperately want to support companies that are doing their best to create sustainable products through their business. Gold is the perfect medium because people know what they’re getting; it’s a familiar material in a territory that might be unfamiliar to them,” the 31-year-old added.

Ian Somerhalder has abandoned plans to try out a “faux hawk” style in the middle of his haircut.
The Vampire Diaries actor took to Instagram on Monday (25Mar19) to upload a mirror selfie showing him wearing a black vest and posing with his head tilted to one side in order to show off his partly shaved head.
In the accompanying caption, Ian explained that he had made a list of goals to accomplish in 2019, including a new look, however, he confessed that he changed his mind about cutting his hair off part of the way through and is now stuck with an uneven hairstyle.
“After the 3 glasses of wine wore off and the clippers ran out of battery… something hit me like a tonne (of) bricks: a little thing called ‘continuity’ for aka #VWars reshoots!” he noted, referring to his upcoming Netflix TV series V-Wars. “I stopped trimming… s**t. Biotin smoothies here we come – gotta grow this s**t out fast… Hair growing out and gearing up for production now. So much gratitude to you all for so much support. It means the world…”
Ian, who is married to actress Nikki Reed, didn’t divulge whether he plans to try out the faux hawk hairstyle once he has finished work on V-Wars or how he will cover his shaved head if his hair doesn’t grow back in time.
The star also shared some of his other priorities for the year, including how he wants to develop his production company Rare Birds, raise money for the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, and unveil his wine and spirits companies.
Earlier this month, Ian launched his first red wine under the Dark ll Dawn label, with the product currently only available in China.
“I’m so proud of this wine. Over 3 years, 90 blends and countless hours of work and travel to make this happen,” the 40-year-old wrote alongside a snap of him posing with a bottle on social media. “Thank you to all that made this dream come true and thank you for supporting me in this amazing endeavour.”

Ian Somerhalder has been food-shamed for stocking up on green vegetables at a grocery store.
The Vampire Diaries actor often talks about his diet and exercise regime, and has long advocated for the benefits of abiding by a balanced eating plan.
However, Ian has now taken to Instagram to share how stunned he was when a random woman recently stopped him in a store to point out that she had “never” seen a basket so well stocked with fruit and vegetables.
“A woman just stopped me in the grocery store and told me that she had never seen a basket like mine,” he captioned a photo of his shopping cart, which appeared to be filled with lettuce, cauliflower, carrots, kale, and garlic. “I told her that I have never NOT seen this type of basket in my grocery-shopping behaviour. A few others chimed in saying that it was a very strange sight! WTF (what the f**k)? A strange sight? I’m in a grocery store. It’s food. It got me thinking and really fired up.”
In his rant, Ian explained that he hoped that he didn’t come across as “preachy”. However, the star, who welcomed a daughter named Bodhi with his actress wife Nikki Reed last year (17), wanted to make the point that people need to take responsibility for what they are eating and emphasised that it isn’t impossible to swap processed goods for fresh foods.
“I don’t mean to sound like a d**k – or preachy but this is nuts: how is it, that grown professional people in a major American city have never seen a grocery basket full of normal & healthy foods that just all happen to be green or not processed. We’re so far down the rabbit hole of packaged and “convenient” foods that our society is paying the price & so is our future. No one in our government is helping us be healthier through education. Why would they? Sick people are GREAT for business,” the 40-year-old commented.
To conclude his post, Ian noted that with a good diet and enough exercise, “everything else will start to fall into place”.
“You wouldn’t put the wrong gas in your car, so why would you put (the) wrong food in your body? We MUST take responsibility for what we put into our bodies starting now. We can do it,” he added.

Zayn Malik and Paris Jackson are fronting the pre-holiday ’18 campaign for Philippine retailer Penshoppe.
Popstar Zayn has been posing for the brand since his days in One Direction, though budding actress Paris is a new addition to the impressive list of Penshoppe’s international ambassadors.
Previous stars to work with the label include Zayn’s girlfriend Gigi Hadid and her model sister Bella, fellow catwalk stars Kendall Jenner, Kaia Gerber and Cara Delevingne, and actor Ian Somerhalder.
Some of the new campaign images have been shared on Penshoppe’s Instagram page, with Zayn and Paris both modelling next season’s must-have pattern, stripes.
“Always a treat for the (eye emoji)! Shop @zayn’s look through the link (in) our bio! #PenshoppePreHoliday2018 #ZaynXPenshoppe,” a snap of Zayn was captioned.
In the close-up photo, the 25-year-old Brit stares away from the camera wearing a navy sweater with green and cream stripes on. His hair is cut short and bleached blonde, while his neck tattoos are on full display.
A second picture features Zayn perched on a bicycle wearing a heavily patterned blue short-sleeved button-down shirt.
Paris’ images are equally as brooding, and in one she stands holding a baseball bat on her shoulders in a red blazer with white stripes, teamed with a matching chequered crop top and tailored trouser set.
The 20-year-old also poses on a railway track and like Zayn, on a bike.
“Fronting the #PenshoppePreHoliday2018 campaign is #TeamPenshoppe’s newest member, Paris Jackson,” reads one caption.

Actor Ian Somerhalder is such a big believer in the “incredible healing properties” of infrared saunas, he’s had one installed in his garage.
The Vampire Diaries star took to Instagram on Monday (25Jun18) to share a snap of himself relaxing in the home sauna, revealing he enjoys detoxing his body while reading scripts for new roles and coming up with fresh ideas for other projects.
“My quiet garage alone time with the new scripts in my wooden capsule of healing heat, light and sound…” he captioned the image. “I’ve come up with many ideas in here for ISF (Ian Somerhalder Foundation), Vampire Diaries, my businesses and my family.”
Ian goes on to sing the praises of experts at Sunlighten Saunas, who claim their use of infrared technology can also help users reduce their blood pressure, lose weight, relieve pain, and fight the physical signs of ageing – and the 39-year-old insists it’s done wonders for his health.
“This thing has change (sic) my life and I’m so grateful that my dear friends at @sunlightensaunas have created such special healing equipment to make our lives and our health better,” he continued. “If you have any doubt of the incredible healing properties of these infrared saunas just check out what they do.
“It’s not just the heat but the light therapy and the sound resonance therapy. Mind blowing… They are helping people feel better and therefore act better to the world that surrounds them and that (is) such a cool thing.”
Ian, who is married to actress Nikki Reed, isn’t the only celebrity to embrace infrared saunas – Gwyneth Paltrow welcomed Sunlighten officials to participate in her In Goop Health wellness summit in Los Angeles earlier this month (Jun18).
