Joan Smalls has been left “overwhelmed” by the support she has received for calling out the fashion industry for not doing enough to support the Black Lives Matter movement.

On Thursday, the Puerto Rico-born model posted a lengthy video on Instagram in which she criticised the fashion industry for simply “jumping on the bandwagon” by supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and urged industry leaders to take action to address the racism and inequality that she has experienced during her modelling career. Smalls said it feeds “the beast of racism and inequality” and called on leaders to give people of colour “a real seat at the table”.

Her fellow models heaped praise on her in the comments, with Kendall Jenner, Imaan Hammam, Lily Aldridge, Duckie Thot, Karen Elson, and Ashley Graham all writing supportive messages. They also spread the word by sharing the video on their Instagram Stories, with Cara Delevingne and British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful also posting it on their timelines with gushing captions.

Uploading the video on their respective Instagram Stories, Amber Valletta wrote, “Listen up fashion family (praying hands emoji) Take Action,” Alton Mason posted, “I love you Joan! We in this together (sic). Thank you Queen @joansmalls,” while Victoria’s Secret star Jasmine Tookes stated, “Our stories will be heard… Very well said @joansmalls… Couldn’t agree more & have had all of the same experiences.”

Hours later, the 31-year-old, who also pledged to donate half her income for the rest of 2020 towards organisations supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, wrote a message on her own Stories timeline to explain how much the positive reaction has meant to her.

“I’m truly overwhelmed by the support and the love shown. To my friends, to my family and my Gaaaang! I love you more then (sic) you’ll ever know. I was nervous about this and had a lot of sleepless nights, so my heart is def touched,” she commented.

Helena Christensen is fronting an inclusive new campaign for Victoria’s Secret.

The U.S. lingerie label has taken a hit in recent years, with critics calling out executives for failing to promote diversity and a range of body types in their advertising and annual fashion shows.

However, bosses are now appearing to take the backlash seriously, and on Thursday, unveiled the spring 2020 marketing imagery for The Body by Victoria collection.

The main photo features veteran Victoria’s Secret Angel Christensen, 51, posing alongside Barbara Palvin, Romee Strijd, Valentina Sampaio, and Solange van Doorn in black and beige underwear sets.

Palvin and van Doorn are both known for embracing their natural curves, while Brazilian star Sampaio made history last August when she became the first-ever transgender model to work for Victoria’s Secret.

In addition, experienced photographer Christensen helmed the rest of the photoshoot, with the other snaps including the likes of curvy model Candice Huffine, Joan Smalls, Daniela Pestova, Jasmine Tookes, and Lais Ribeiro.

Marketing bosses at Victoria’s Secret appeared to want to take a low-key approach to the relaunch, with the campaign promoted on the company’s website but not yet on Instagram.

In addition, the brand has been affected by the coronavirus crisis sweeping the world, with executives announcing on Thursday that they will be temporarily closing the online store and boutiques across North America to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“Responding safely and responsibly is one way we continue to show our appreciation for those who make Victoria’s Secret possible, especially during difficult times,” a spokesperson wrote on Instagram. “While our associates are home with their loved ones, we’ll support them with full pay. We’re also working on addition ways to provide support through our home communities for those who may need an outstretched hand.”

Executives have confirmed the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has been cancelled for 2019.

After months of speculation about the annual spectacle, bosses at L Brands, the parent company of the U.S lingerie label, announced during a call with financial analysts on Thursday that the event will not happen this year.

“As communicated previously, we think it’s important to evolve the marketing of Victoria’s Secret, that is happening in certain respects now and I think there will be more to come,” explained L Brands’ chief financial officer Stuart Burgdoerfer. “And with that said, we’re figuring out how to advance the positioning of the brand and best communicate that to customers.”

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has been held each year since 1995 to showcase the brand’s lingerie and sleepwear offerings.

Top models, including Lily Aldridge, Elsa Hosk, Jasmine Tookes, Karlie Kloss, Taylor Hill, as well as Bella and Gigi Hadid, have participated in recent events. However, the 2018 show, held in New York City, had the lowest TV ratings since its inception – causing leaders at the company to rethink the concept.

In a memo sent to employees in May, Les Wexner, chief executive officer of L Brands, indicated that the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show would no longer be broadcast on network TV.

“In 2019 and beyond, we’re focusing on developing exciting and dynamic content and a new kind of event – delivered to our customers on platforms that she’s glued to … and in ways that will push the boundaries of fashion in the global digital age,” he commented.

Earlier this week, Victoria’s Secret posted another quarter of declining sales. The brand has been hit by the growth of contemporary underwear labels like Third Love, Aerie, and Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty, while company leaders have also been accused of failing to embrace diversity and inclusivity in its marketing imagery and shows.

The Brazilian model, who is perhaps best known for her work as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, took to Instagram over the weekend to announce that her beau, who she began dating in September 2018, proposed to her during the recent Burning Man festival in Nevada.

Posting a photo of the proposal, Lais, 28, wrote: “I’m a bit late for Burning Man pics and of course I didn’t touch my phone for five days and I don’t have a single pic. But thanks to my Bff @jeromeduran he captured one of the best moments in my life!”

She added: “@stickity13 surprised me at my fav (favourite) place in the world and proposed. And I couldn’t be happier! We are getting married guys.”

Meanwhile, Joakim uploaded two sweet photos of himself and Lais at the festival.

“Proposing to you was the easiest decision of my life,” the 34-year-old gushed in the caption. “Seeing that smile riding the playa at the burn… I will never forget that… I know you know because I tell you every day. I love u (you). On another note, this wedding is about to be lit.”

Jasmine Tookes gets ‘more nervous’ about Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show every year

Jasmine Tookes’s nerves get “worse and worse every year” ahead of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

The model has walked the runway for the lingerie brand’s annual televised extravaganza since 2012, with company bosses selecting her to wear the coveted Fantasy Bra in 2016.

Despite having seven years of experience with the show, Jasmine admitted in a new interview with Vogue Australia that her nerves are worse now than they ever were when she was a newcomer.

“The nerves definitely don’t go away. (They) get worse and worse every year, because you know what to expect, how many cameras are there, how many people are going to be watching,” she explained. “Then when it’s over, you’re so sad like, ‘Oh no! I want to do it again!'”

The American star, who has walked for the likes of Calvin Klein and Prada, was scouted at the age of 16 and in the early days of her career, would often be the only woman of colour on the runway.

Accordingly, she’s glad the industry has become more inclusive.

Jasmine, who is of African, Brazilian, and Bajan ancestry, hopes her appearances in the VS Fashion Show and on other runways will help open the door for other young models.

“I feel like (my experiences) also open the door for people who are following in my footsteps, which I felt like Naomi Campbell did for me and Tyra Banks as well,” the 28-year-old shared. “I think it’s great that I can help young girls become confident and see that they can do it too and be on these runways as well.”

Another bonus to serving as an Angel is having a sisterhood of fellow models on hand to offer support and advice.

“I think that’s really hard to find in the industry – really true friends – so I feel very fortunate that I have all these girls to call on and they can call on me,” Jasmine gushed.

Victoria’s Secret has officially relaunched swimwear in the wake of customer demand.

Back in August 2016, executives at the U.S. lingerie giant decided to discontinue making one-pieces and bikinis, after experiencing low sales, though in light of a major restructure occurring at the company, Stuart B. Burgdoerfer, chief financial officer and executive vice president of L Brands, the owner of Victoria’s Secret, announced in November (18) that the label would offer swimwear again.

On Monday (18Mar19), brand reps unveiled the 2019 collection, however, they confirmed that it will be only available to buy online.

“Due to overwhelming demand, the brand has curated a limited assortment of the popular swimwear on its e-commerce platform for spring/summer featuring the best brands, silhouettes and trends of the season,” they said in a statement.

The swimwear line offers a variety of high-waist bikinis, Brazilian-cut legs, and asymmetric shapes, plus the classic designs Victoria’s Secret was previously known for. An accompanying campaign features models such as Sara Sampaio, Jasmine Tookes, Romee Strijd, Grace Elizabeth, Lorena Rae, Aiden Curtiss, Megan Williams, and Maya Stepper posing in the brand-new swimwear designs on a beach.

One snap depicts Sampaio wearing a strappy black bikini, while Tookes is seen in a sporty black bikini top which is matched with leopard print bottoms.

In addition to Victoria’s Secret swimwear, a select assortment of items from top swimwear brands including Seafolly, Banana Moon, Lascana and La Blanca will be available to purchase on the Victoria’s Secret website, as will an all-new assortment of sunglasses.

“The collection features fashion designs and a range of classic and modern styles,” a spokesperson noted, adding that the eyewear will be available at select boutiques and online.

Romee Strijd has been tapped to wear a special Swarovski look at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

The Dutch model first worked for the U.S. lingerie giant in 2014 and reached the prestigious Angel status the following year. Romee, 23, will be appearing in the 2018 show in New York City on Thursday (08Nov18) too, with executives at crystal company Swarovski now announcing that she will walk the runway in a bespoke design during the Celestial Angel Section of the spectacle.

“If you’ve ever been lucky enough to see a shooting star in the night sky, then you get an idea of how spectacular this year’s Swarovski Look for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will be,” a representative said in a statement. “Inspired by the heavens, it transforms Angel Romee Strijd into a sparkling burst of starlight, using 125,000 crystals. The effect is simply out of this world.”

Romee’s ensemble features a jewel-encrusted seven-pointed star in the place of wings, with the costume weighing a hefty 20 pounds (nine kilograms). There are 70,000 crystals attached to her bodysuit, which took a team 150 hours to hand-bead on.

“Here, the idea was that it should resemble a star-strewn night sky, so the bodice features a diagonal neck-to-hip constellation of crystals in a stardust effect, the shapes of the crystals echoing celestial bodies such as glittering stars and a luminescent moon,” they added.

Among the 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show outfits that will be worn by models including Adriana Lima, Elsa Hosk, Candice Swanepoel, Jasmine Tookes, Lais Ribeiro, Gigi Hadid, Taylor Hill, and Kendall Jenner, there will be 45 that are covered in a total of 850,000 sparkling crystals.

“I feel like a superhero when I walk in this outfit!” added Romee.

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, featuring musical guests such as Rita Ora, The Chainsmokers and Halsey, will air in the U.S. on the ABC network on 2 December.

Lais Ribeiro feared she’d miss out on the 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show due to a broken bone in her foot.

The Brazilian model has worked with the U.S. lingerie giant since 2010, and wore the Victoria’s Secret Fantasy Bra at the 2017 spectacle held in Shanghai, China.

Though Lais has spent the last couple of months preparing for the next show, to be held in New York on 8 November, she has now shared that she was scared she might have to skip the event due to an injury.

“I broke a bone in my foot recently and I was worried that I’d have to sit this year out. So, my goal this year my goal was to (actually) walk in the show but all good – it’s healed. I am taking it easier, though,” she told Elle.com of her preparation. “I started doing Pilates and realised that it’s much better for my body. I am not tired all the time, so Pilates is definitely key for me.”

Previously, Lais was forced to pull out of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 2012 after she sprained her ankle in rehearsals.

And the brunette beauty says that walking with the runway while sporting large wings is no easy task.

“Sometimes the big wings make me feel like I’m bouncing while walking. And then I’m thinking, ‘How are my facial expressions, how am I walking?’ There are a lot of things going on at once, so I just try to focus,” the 28-year-old shared of her thoughts while strutting her stuff on the catwalk.

The 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will feature veterans like Adriana Lima, Behati Prinsloo, and Candice Swanepoel, with other returning faces including Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Elsa Hosk, Jasmine Tookes, Josephine Skriver, Martha Hunt, Romee Strijd, Sara Sampaio, Stella Maxwell, and Taylor Hill.

Bebe Rexha, The Chainsmokers, Halsey, Kelsea Ballerini, Rita Ora, and Shawn Mendes will be among the musical performers.

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will air in the U.S. on the ABC network on 2 December.
