Joey King cried when she tried on her Zac Posen dress for the 2019 Emmy Awards.
The 20-year-old actress stunned on the purple carpet in a red strapless old Hollywood gown which was custom-made by the fashion designer, who knew he had made the perfect look when The Act star “started crying when she tried it on.”
“This is her dream dress and we really captured it and that’s when I know that I’ve done a good job,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “And I really care a great deal about her. I think she’s really a spectacular actress and a wonderful person and girl.
“I think it’s great to have a young woman who wants to look elegant. It’s rarer and rarer and Joey really understands that and it’s cool. It’s going to take her a long way!”
The collaboration marked a “full circle” moment for the duo, as Posen brought King to her first Emmy Awards last year and they decided to work together on her dress when she was nominated for her first-ever Emmy Award for her role in The Act this year.
And the actress knew exactly what she wanted her outfit to look like.
“She wanted a cool bow detail in the back, something strapless, some skin exposed in the back, and something with an architectural quality to it that remained elegant and classic, which is so refreshing to hear from a (then) 19-year-old. She wants fashion!” Posen gushed. “She knows her references and she knows my clothing now really well, so it’s a real designer Hollywood collaboration.”
King’s stylist Jared Eng also told the outlet that she wanted to channel old Hollywood glamour, “like Audrey Hepburn”.
The Kissing Booth star was nominated for the Lead Actress in a Limited Series prize, but lost out to Michelle Williams.

Mandy Moore has joked about “twinning” with her This Is Us co-star Susan Kelechi Watson at the 2019 Emmy Awards on Sunday.
The This Is Us actress, who was nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category, walked the purple carpet at the event in a gorgeous Brandon Maxwell gown with a pink off-the-shoulder top and long red skirt.
However, Mandy’s co-star Susan showed up in a very similar number from Badgley Mischka, and accordingly, the pair took the opportunity to take some pictures together.
“Always happy to be here and twinning with my girl, @susankelechiwatson. Thanks for having us @televisionacad! #Emmys,” the 35-year-old captioned a slideshow of happy snaps on her Instagram page.
Meanwhile, Susan, 37, uploaded the same photos and wrote: “No one else I’d rather twin with! Emmy nominee @mandymooremm. So excited to be here and have some famcandy on my arm (sic)! Feeling so extra special in this delicious @badgleymischka. Thank you both for this red and pink dream!”
The post caught the attention of Mandy and Susan’s celebrity pals, with actress Rachel Bilson commenting, “Stunning”, and model Karen Elson praising, “Gorgeous!!!”
Red and pink were a major trend for the 2019 Emmy Awards, with Taraji P. Henson rocking a blush number from Vera Wang with a red cape, Marisa Tomei opting for a pink and red dress by Ralph & Russo, and Catherine Zeta-Jones donning a hot pink Georges Hobeika number. Elsewhere, Joey King selected a ruby red Zac Posen dress, Sophie Turner sported a pale pink Louis Vuitton gown, Halsey dazzled in a strapless pink ombre Rami Kadi ballgown, and Zoe Kazan turned heads in a black Gucci ensemble with red and pink ribbon detailing draped on the bodice.

Ezra Miller has long been fascinated by the way cosmetics have “transformative” power.
The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them star has hit headlines in recent months over his head-turning red carpet looks, such as the padded Moncler gown he wore to a film premiere last November, and the trippy eyeball face make-up and Burberry suit he sported to the Met Gala in May.
Now, Miller has opened up about the way make-up informs his imagination.
“Doing make-up and putting on nail polish at home with my sisters was really important to my relationship with gender expression,” he told CR MEN. “I’ve been naturally physically androgynous my whole life. There are times that my family collectively recalls when people presumed we were three sisters. And then being exposed to (make-up) through productions that had overtly transformative beauty created constant engagement of imagination.”
Miller went on to explain that he also views cosmetics as a means of helping to “represent one’s truest form”.
Taking his love of beauty products to the next level, Miller was recently named as one of the faces of Urban Decay’s Pretty Different campaign.
Also starring Lizzo, The Act actress Joey King, Colombian singer Karol G and South Korean singer-songwriter CL, the actor sports a slick of bright red lipstick in the imagery.
“I’ve had so many experiences of being obviously a weirdo. Gravitated towards the bizarre. And I think that’s sort of the quintessence of the lesson,” the 26-year-old commented of the way in which the campaign celebrates diversity.

Joey King was forced to confront her true self after shaving off her hair for her latest role.
The actress has shorn off her locks several times, after landing parts that required a buzz-cut in The Dark Knight Rises, Wish I Was Here and most recently, TV series The Act.
And it was for the Hulu real-life drama, in which she played Gypsy Rose Blanchard, that prompted Joey to really think about how she felt about herself.
“I got rid of something that I usually hide behind, and that so many of us hide behind, and I was forced to confront myself and just be with myself with no hair,” she told People. “(Between that) and diving into such a complex character every day, I really just became my most confident and happy self.”
She also revealed that her family and friends were concerned about her shaving off her hair, as they were worried she would once again face a barrage of criticism from social media trolls.
“They were like, ‘Do you want to go through (that) again?’ But when I decided I was willing to take that risk, they were like, ‘All right, well then we are fully behind you.’ And I’m super thankful that they are,” the 19-year-old explained. “I remembered the way I felt when people said mean things when I was younger. But then I fully decided that I wanted to do it and when the day came along, I was like ‘Get this s**t off my head!'”
In addition, the young actress is one of five famous faces – including Juice hitmaker Lizzo – featured in Urban Decay’s new campaign, Pretty Different, which celebrates individuality and challenges stereotypes.
“I definitely own my uniqueness,” Joey shared, having rocked a pixie cut in the images. “I am very blunt and very honest. I don’t really have a filter.”

Lizzo and Ezra Miller have been tapped to star in Urban Decay’s Pretty Different campaign.
The stars are among the five new spokespeople for the U.S. cosmetics company, with The Act actress Joey King, Colombian singer Karol G and South Korean singer-songwriter CL also fronting the advertisements, with all of the personalities chosen for their work in championing uniqueness.
In her Pretty Different photoshoot, Lizzo is seen gazing at the camera while rocking bright blue eyeshadow and light pink lip gloss, and the Juice hitmaker noted that the concept perfectly aligns with her own values, especially in relation to advocating for body positivity and self-love.
“I definitely fell to the pressure of trying to fit in to the social norm,” the 31-year-old reflected. “When I decided to embrace myself. And who I was fully I noticed that the world fell in love with me, more and more and more.”
While Joey is depicted sporting bright coral eyeshadow, Karol G sports glittery black eye make-up, CL opts for metallic purple eyeliner and Ezra wears a slick of bright red lipstick.
“I’ve had so many experiences of being obviously a weirdo. Gravitated towards the bizarre. And I think that’s sort of the quintessence of the lesson,” the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them actor commented of the campaign.
The five new brand ambassadors will appear in upcoming Urban Decay launches throughout the year.
And Wende Zomnir, Urban Decay’s founding partner, is thrilled to be teaming with such an exciting set of personalities.
“Pretty Different is our anthem for fellow make-up junkies who don’t subscribe to beauty standards,” she stated. “It’s our tribute to individuality because everyone is pretty different. It’s our approach to reinventing what it means to be a beauty brand.”

Kiernan Shipka was a fashion force to be reckoned with at the Kids’ Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday (23Mar19), rocking up in a bow-tiful Miu Miu dress.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actress looked stunning in her cute but elegant dress from the label’s Pre-Fall 2019 line, which featured an embellished top with a cutout on the torso, a black bow on the waist and an ivory pleated skirt.
Kiernan completed her look with black accessories and stud earrings, and wore her blonde hair in a high bun. Inside the awards ceremony, held at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, the 19-year-old star posed with fellow stars including To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before actress Lana Condor, who looked stylish in a ruched white crop top and high-waisted red trousers.
Kiernan also shared a snap on her Instagram page alongside Bebe Rexha, as well as a shot which showed that her gorgeous dress had narrowly avoided being slimed during the awards ceremony – with a tiny bit of the green goop landing on her arm.
Elsewhere, The Kissing Booth star Joey King looked picture perfect as she posed for photographers ahead of the awards, wearing a Jacquemus ensemble consisting of a knit shirt and leather harness teamed with wide-leg leather cargo pants and a mini handbag.
And Janelle Monae also dressed to impress, wowing in a checked tuxedo jacket from the Petar Petrov spring ’19 runway collection which she wore as a dress. Finishing off her look, the Hidden Figures actress added a pair of Christian Louboutin ankle boots and a black hat, with yellow earrings complimenting the yellow accents in her boots.
Jennifer Hudson and Ally Brooke were two of the other stars who pulled out all the stops with their ensembles at the ceremony.

Actress Joey King had fun with various daring hairstyles before shaving her head for new TV drama The Act.
The 21 year old portrays Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who was convicted of murdering her mother Dee Dee Blanchard in 2015, in the anthology series. Reports later surfaced revealing Gypsy’s mother suffered from the mental disorder Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, and spent years convincing her daughter she was seriously ill.
The role called for King to undergo a drastic transformation and she was required to shave her head for the project, so, in the days leading up to bidding her hair farewell, the star decided to have a little fun and try out a few risky styles.
“Before I did it, I wanted to have fun with my hair so about a month before I shaved it, I dyed it blonde,” King tells W magazine. “Then, about two days before I shaved it, I dyed my hair blue and cut my bangs.”
King ultimately documented the drastic appearance change in a video for her over eight million Instagram followers and had to be diligent when it came to maintaining the look.
“When we were on set, I had to shave it every three to four days to keep it super short,” she shares.
Shedding her hair proved to be empowering, allowing her to let go of being attached to parts of her appearance.
“A lot of the time we find ourselves hiding behind our hair, covering ourselves up. It becomes part of our identity,” she notes. “So you’re losing part of that, and it’s definitely an adjustment for sure, but I’ve learned to love my hair when it was completely gone.”
She adds, “Now that it’s growing back, I’m really enjoying that process. I kind of want to keep it short for a bit.”

Sarah Hyland poked fun at her love of tacos with her Halloween outfit choice for a bash on Saturday night (27Oct18).
The Modern Family star donned a platinum blonde wig and giant taco ensemble as she posed next to boyfriend Wells Adams, who sported long brunette locks and a yellow dress for his take on Beauty and the Beast’s Belle.
Explaining the pair’s unusual looks, Sarah shared a snap on Instagram and wrote: “The only thing better than Taco Bell… is Taco Belle #firesauce #dollopofdaisy.”
Wells also posted a picture on Instagram which showed Sarah staring at him adoringly, and captioned it: “Find someone who looks at you the way Taco looks at Belle.”
Inside Just Jared’s 7th Annual Halloween Party in Los Angeles, Sarah was reunited with her Modern Family on-screen sister Ariel Winter, who dressed as Michelle Pfeiffer from Scarface alongside boyfriend Levi Meaden as Al Pacino’s character Tony Montana.
Elsewhere at the bash, Rumer Willis went for an androgynous look by apparently dressing as a cowboy, alongside sister Scout in a similar ensemble, while Chris Colfer and Adam Lambert donned devilish outfits for the occasion.
Leona Lewis used the party to show off her abs as she channelled her inner genie, but had some competition from actress Victoria Justice, who wore a similar stomach-baring ensemble.
The Kissing Booth actress Joey King looked dramatic as she dressed as Harry Potter villain Voldemort, poking fun at her bald head after getting a buzzcut for upcoming true crime series The Act.
Sharing a video of her outfit on Instagram, Joey wrote: “Name’s Tom but my friends call me Voldemort teehee #JJHalloween @paulyblanch.”
Meanwhile, Kelly Osbourne went as American Horror Story character Myrtle Snow and Jaime King opted for a St. Joan of Arc-inspired costume.

Independence Day: Resurgence actress Joey King has shaved off her long hair for a new role.
The 19-year-old star has been cast in Hulu’s true crime series The Act, alongside Patricia Arquette and Chloe Sevigny.
Based on a Buzzfeed article by Michelle Dean, the show will recount the story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, played by Joey, and her murdered mother Dee Dee Blanchard, portrayed by Patricia.
Sharing a video on Instagram of the shaving process, Joey told her followers: “My name for the next 4 months, is Gypsy Rose Blanchard. This story is very disturbing and I am honoured to be able to portray it. What a wild ride this will be on “The Act”.”
And in an interview with Allure, the teen star admitted she had no reservations when it came to clipping her longs locks.
“I’ve never really had an attachment to my hair,” she shrugged. “I couldn’t care less what happens to it. No part of me was nervous or was second-guessing it. So many people would ask me, ‘Are you really scared?’ or ‘Are you nervous?’ or say, ‘You’re so brave.’ And I’d go, ‘I’m not brave, I’m just cutting my hair off.'”
It’s not the first time Joey has had a razor-short haircut for work; in Christopher Nolan’s 2012 Batman flick The Dark Knight Rises, she was nearly bald for her role as a child prisoner, and she shaved her head on camera in Zach Braff movie Wish I Was Here two years later.
“I know this sounds crazy, and not a lot of people will agree with me, but I think every woman should shave her head at least once in her life,” she smiled. “It’s not like they’re going to regret it 10 years down the line when their hair is long again. It’s something that’s very freeing, really fun, and really empowering.”
