Fashion label Sies Marjan is closing down.

Founded by creative director Sander Lak in 2016, the New York City-based ready-to-wear brand was known for its evocative use of colour and proportion.

However, Lak announced on Monday that he was shuttering the business as a result of financial difficulties in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

“As a young independent company, we were significantly impacted by Covid-19. With a heavy heart, we have made the very difficult decision to close our business,” he said in a statement released to editors at WWD. “What we have worked on has been a dream come true. Thank you to everyone who has given their time and talent to Sies Marjan over the years. We have built a singular brand whose legacy is not just in the clothes and collections, but within each person who contributed along the way.”

The Sies Marjan website and Instagram page have already closed.

Lak previously worked for the likes of Phillip Lim, Balmain, and Dries Van Noten before heading to the U.S. to launch his own label. Backed by Nancy and Howard Marks’ holding company Deia, the Dutch designer won the CFDA Award for Emerging Talent in 2018, having been nominated for the same prize a year earlier.

The news comes as a number of brands have indicated plans to restructure amid the Covid-19 crisis. Executives at Diane Von Furstenberg are reportedly cutting 75 per cent of staff members and closing the majority of stores, while John Varvatos filed for bankruptcy protection last month.

Executives at John Varvatos have filed for bankruptcy protection amid a major restructure.

Founded by designer John Varvatos in 1999, the luxury menswear retailer offers a range of apparel, accessories, and fragrances, and over the years, has become known for featuring musicians and bands such as Nick Jonas, Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Dave Matthews, The Roots, and Green Day in its campaigns.

However, bosses announced on Wednesday that they had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and as part of the restructure, would be selling the business to Lion Capital, an existing investor.

“The agreements with Lion represent a critical step in our process to transform our business to drive long-term, sustainable growth,” Varvatos said in a statement. “We have taken decisive action to respond to the challenges that all retailers face in the present environment and we remain extremely confident that our brand, celebrating its 20th year in business, will emerge even stronger. We have a passionate team, a fierce global consumer following and a commitment to our customers, whom we expect to serve for many years to come.”

According to the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, a Chapter 11 filing permits reorganisation under the bankruptcy laws. Typically, the John Varvatos boutiques would be able to remain open, but the coronavirus crisis has curtailed any such plans.

“Along with the rest of the luxury retail industry, John Varvatos Enterprises has been greatly impacted by the negative effects of the coronavirus pandemic,” a spokesperson added. “In response to the rapid and exponential spread of Covid-19 as well as relevant governmental orders, the company’s leadership took difficult yet prudent steps to temporarily close all store locations and conserve cash. The restructuring and related agreements represent the effort to continue the company’s legacy and to reposition the reorganised entity for long-term success.”

Nick Jonas wanted to create fragrance inspired by his ‘crazy year’

Nick Jonas’s latest fragrance launch was inspired by the “craziest year” of his life.

Over the last 12 months, the 27-year-old has married Priyanka Chopra and reunited with his brothers Joe and Kevin for the Jonas Brothers’ musical comeback.

His wedding to the Quantico star consisted of two official weddings and a week of celebrations, which Nick later confessed had been wild and extravagant, and he and his brothers also released their first single in six years, Sucker, which was subsequently followed by an album, Happiness Begins, and a U.S. tour.

Accordingly, Nick wanted to capture the chaos of his whirlwind year in JVxNJ Silver Edition, his third fragrance collaboration with designer John Varvatos.

“We’re in probably the craziest year of our lives, both together in the work we’re doing and separately,” he told Allure magazine. “Men these days are balancing a lot and always on the go. We wanted to have this feel like a little bit of a disconnect, a little fearless, but it also should give you energy. We tried to bottle that up in this thing.”

The singer is blown away by the feedback he’s received from fans of the fragrance, and loves that it gives them confidence.

“I aim to build something that becomes part of the fabric of people’s lives, just like how a favourite song can make you feel really confident and give you energy,” the star gushed.

Featuring notes of Italian lemon, green leaves, chromatic sage and amber, Varvatos stressed that while the scent is more masculine, it “transcends across gender”.

“We just think of scents that we love and want to wear. I think the world is much more open to that today,” he shared.

JVxNJ Silver Eau de Toilette, priced at $74 ($57), is available now.

Nick Jonas has confessed he sometimes steals face masks from his wife Priyanka Chopra.

The singer/actor wed the Quantico beauty in an opulent ceremony last December, and in a new interview with People, revealed that when he runs out of his skincare products, he doesn’t hesitate to use Priyanka’s.

“For sure. I don’t know who makes them, but (I take her) sheet masks. Then I’ll occasionally run out of facial moisturiser or something and I’ll use hers. I think she likes it. She likes to share. Or maybe she doesn’t. We’ll see,” Nick laughed.

The Jumanji: The Next Level star recently launched JVxNJ Silver Edition, his third fragrance collaboration with designer John Varvatos. And he said his famous older brothers – Joe and Kevin – were left out of the creative process as they don’t have any ideas when it comes to selecting aftershaves.

“My brothers have terrible opinions! They like the first one John and I made (JVxNJ) but I haven’t shown them this one yet,” the 27-year-old shared, adding that wife Priyanka loves the new fragrance, which features note of bergamot, sage, patchouli, and sandalwood.

“She likes that I am mixing it up,” he commented of the new, muskier scent. “I’m glad that she does because I’ll be wearing it quite a lot! When I am planning what I am wearing, since my closet has a lot of variety, a big piece of the puzzle is choosing what fragrance I want to wear too.”

JVXNJ Silver Edition is priced from $74 (£58).

John Varvatos has teamed up with Led Zeppelin on an exclusive capsule collection.

The menswear designer is no stranger to collaboration, having previously teamed up with the likes of Nick Jonas and Guns N’ Roses on limited-edition lines.

Now, Varvatos is celebrating the iconic English rock band with a range evoking the aesthetic of original members Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and late drummer John Bonham.

“Working with Led Zeppelin on this collaboration is a dream come true. Their music and style has had a huge influence on me,” said Varvatos. “It’s been incredible developing this collection with the band and creating clothes that represent the roots of their style, but at the same time are extremely relevant today.”

An accompanying campaign was shot by photographer and director Mark Seliger and features model Miles McMillan.

The collection includes logo T-shirts, shirts, black jeans, a brown leather coat, a velvet jacket, and two scarves. There is also a velvet blazer with splatter print and an updated take on a vintage circa 1970s Led Zeppelin tour jacket.

With regards to the final collection, Page praised Varvatos’ vision for the garments.

“Having had the great pleasure to work with John personally on numerous collaborations in the past including my book, the Yardbirds, and the John Varvatos spring 2013 ad campaign with Gary Clark Jr. I’m pleased that there is now a Led Zeppelin collection. I was really impressed with how everything came out,” he shared, while Plant added: “The Varvatos style is unique – he’s out on his own… Above and beyond the crowd below.”

Led Zeppelin x John Varvatos is now available to purchase from the brand’s website and boutiques. Items are priced from $118 – $2,698 (£98 – £2,138).

John Varvatos is launching a clothing collection inspired by hit TV series Game of Thrones.

The HBO fantasy drama, an adaption of George R. R. Martin’s novels, has built up a huge international following since the first season premiered in 2011, with the eighth and final season set to return to U.S. screens on 14 April (19).

To celebrate Game of Thrones, Varvatos has now announced that he is gearing up to release a capsule line influenced by the themes and costumes of the show on Thursday (14Mar19).

“From the very first episode, I have been inspired by the incredible costumes in Game of Thrones,” the 63-year-old said in a statement, according to WWD. “To have this opportunity to collaborate is a dream come true.”

The full range will be unveiled at Varvatos’ Bowery boutique in New York on Wednesday evening, with one preview image depicting a male model sporting a brown jacket with brown button detailing, while another teaser image showed a black T-shirt with red dragon motif on the front.

In addition, the 11-piece line will include trousers, leather outerwear, and a messenger bag, with prices ranging from $98 to $2,698 (£75 to £2,050).

Regarding the concept, Jeff Peters, vice president of licensing and retail for HBO, confirmed that the Varvatos line would be the only luxury fashion collaboration to mark the end of Game of Thrones.

“John Varvatos has delivered a stunning collection of high-quality pieces that are fashionable and wearable, while capturing the show’s essence through its details and ornate design,” the executive commented to the fashion publication.

The John Varvatos x Game of Thrones pieces will be available to buy on the label’s website and at selected stores, as well as at some Bloomingdale’s department stores.

Varvatos is no stranger to collaboration, having previously teamed with singer/actor Nick Jonas on a fashion collection.

Pop star Nick Jonas is working on a “top secret” documentary with fashion designer John Varvatos.

The singer/actor has become good friends with Varvatos in recent months after hitting it off at a dinner party, and they have since teamed up on a series of fashion ventures, with Nick becoming the face of his pal’s clothing label in January (18), before designing his own collection for the brand.

They have since teamed up once more for Varvatos’ first cologne collaboration, JV x NJ, which they launched at a party in New York City on Wednesday (08Aug18), but there’s many more joint projects in the pipeline – and some have nothing to do with fashion.

According to Pret-a-Reporter, Nick and John recently travelled through Europe and Cuba together as part of a “top secret” idea, but they are keeping specific details under wraps for the time being.

“It’s a film project, a documentary that we’ve been working on together, which I’m very excited about,” Nick tells the outlet. “I can tell you it’s going to be an important piece to the next evolution of my life, both as a person and on a creative level and as an artist.”

Varvatos explains he and Nick wanted to expand beyond the fashion world because, after getting to know one another, they discovered they have so much more in common.

“We feel like we’ve really connected on so many things, and we want to do things that we’re passionate about,” he teases. “And I’m sure we’ll come back to doing more in those categories (clothing and fragrance), but we’re really looking at some things outside of that right now that we’re deep into and super excited about.”

And John admits he’s found his creative soulmate in Nick: “I always think and I’ve always felt this way growing up, that two heads are better than one,” he adds. “And in this particular case, working with Nick, I felt all along that two heads are better than one.”

Nick Jonas is moving into the fragrance market.

Singer and actor Nick has been working with American designer John Varvatos since January, first as the face of the label and then on a fashion collection.

The partnership has now gone up a level with the release of cologne JVxNJ.

Described as “dynamic and irresistible, capturing the upbeat energy of the city as dusk settles and nightlife comes alive”, the scent features top notes of mandarin and kaffir lime leaves, heart notes of sage, rosemary and lavender, and sandalwood at its base.

“Proud to present the latest piece from my collaboration with @johnvarvatos… #JVxNJ the fragrance for men is out now!” Nick shared on Instagram.

Talking to People magazine about perfume on a woman, the 25-year-old, who is dating actress Priyanka Chopra, thinks it has the ability to bolster confidence.

And expanding on his foray into fragrance, Nick revealed his thought process going into the project.

“We are keeping it really authentic – something in my life I can wear at an event suited up or also feel confident and sexy in it if I am just in jeans and a T-shirt,” he shared. “That balance kind of the everyday man approach while still having a lot of character is a really special thing.”

The Jealous singer also admitted he’s not yet ready to gift his brothers, Kevin, Joe and Frankie, a bottle of JVxNJ just yet.

“I haven’t given it to them to try because I don’t want them to start wearing it!” he laughed. “It is that funny thing when someone in your inner circle starts wearing the same cologne as you, so I am trying to keep it from them for a little while longer so I feel special. And then eventually I will give them one.”

John Varvatos is adding to his fashion offerings with a new jewellery range.

The American designer, who helms his namesake label, is the go-to designer for a host of male celebrities, including Chris Hemsworth, Ringo Starr and Nick Jonas, with whom he recently partnered on a six-piece collection.

While Varvatos’ brand already produces accessories as well as menswear, the designer is yet to launch jewellery – until now.

Teaming up with jewellery designer and master goldsmith Gurhan Orhan, Varvatos has created more than 100 pieces, made up of bracelets cufflinks, necklaces and rings.

“Jewellery has always held an important place in our brand DNA. Last fall, while searching for the right partner to further develop and create a more robust collection, I met renowned jeweller Gurhan Orhan,” Varvatos said in a statement. “We immediately connected on so many levels. Together we’ve created a very special and unique signature collection.”

Varvatos’ latest venture is in keeping with his brand’s edgy aesthetic, and he and Orhan utilised a wide range of materials, including black diamonds, sapphires, black onyx, leather, gold and silver. All precious stones were hand-picked from ethical sources.

Prices start at $198 (£148) and the collection is on sale now.

Talking about the partnership, Orhan commented: “It is a dream for me to have found a partner who shares my passion for rock music and the style that goes along with it.

“Every part of creating this jewellery line for John Varvatos has been about sharing the same ideas, mentality and passion. I love working with John as much as I love the line we have created together.”
