Queen Latifah has signed on to front a big screen adaptation of children’s book The Tiger Rising.

The Star actress will take on the role of wise housekeeper Willie May in the upcoming film, which will be based on Kate DiCamillo’s 2001 work about a 12-year-old boy named Rob Horton who finds a caged tiger in the centre of the woods near his home.

Other key characters include Rob’s father Robert Horton, Rob’s classmate Sistine Bailey, her mother Mrs. Bailey, and school principal Mr. Phelmer.

No further casting details or a potential release date has been announced. Latifah will also serve as an executive producer on the project, which is set to begin shooting in the fall.

However, it is known that Ray Giarratana has adapted the screenplay and will direct the feature. The filmmaker previously acted as a visual effects supervisor on movies such as 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, and the recently released John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

Latifah has just finished a three-season run as Carlotta Brown on now-cancelled TV series Star and played Sasha Franklin in hit 2017 comedy Girls Trip.

She is in the pre-production phases of Angela Tucker’s drama Paper Chase and Jeffrey Reyes’ King of the South, a biopic about Master P, the hip-hop mogul and founder of No Limit Records, and is also producing TV movie The Clark Sisters: The First Ladies of Gospel and comedy The Trap.

Newbery Medal-winning writer DiCamillo is known for her 2003 novel The Tale of Despereaux and 2013’s Flora & Ulysses, while her 2000 book Because of Winn-Dixie was made into a family film by director Wayne Wang in 2005.

The next chapter in Keanu Reeves’ John Wick franchise is to be released in 2021.

Following the release of the third instalment of the series, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, earlier this month, executives at Lionsgate confirmed on Monday that they have greenlit another film, currently titled John Wick: Chapter 4.

The flick is slated for release on 21 May 2021, with the news first announced via a text message to fans who had signed up for news about the movies, with the note reading, “You have served. You will be of service. John Wick: Chapter 4 is coming – May 21, 2021.”

No other details regarding the cast or plot were shared.

The third feature in the neo-noir action franchise saw Reeves return as the titular character, with Chad Stahelski back directing. Also starring Halle Berry, Laurence Fishburne, Anjelica Huston, and Ian McShane, the narrative focuses on ex-hitman Wick as he discovers himself on the run after killing a member of an international assassin’s guild.

The film, which was shot in New York City, Montreal, and Morocco, has received positive reviews from critics, especially in regards to fight choreography, aesthetics and Reeves’ performance. On its opening weekend, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum grossed $57 million (£44 million) in the United States and Canada, and $35 million (£27 million) in other territories, for a worldwide total of $92 million (£72 million).

In addition to working on the new film, Reeves has a busy slate of projects at present. He is in the pre-production stages of movies The Starling and Rally Car, and is set to reprise one of his most famous roles – time-travelling layabout Ted Logan – in a new Bill & Ted movie.

The 54-year-old has also been attached to play John Rain in upcoming TV series Rain, and recently shared in a chat with Variety that he would like to play demon hunter John Constantine in a follow-up to his 2005 film Constantine.

“I’ve always wanted to play John Constantine again. I just love that world, too, and I love that character,” he commented.

Keanu Reeves’ impressive skill set takes centre stage in John Wick 3

John Wick director Chad Stahelski made a list of Keanu Reeves’ skills and tried to cram as many of them in to the third instalment of the film franchise.

Chad started his Hollywood career as a stunt double, and ended up working closely with Keanu on The Matrix trilogy.

Fast forward 11 years and the 54-year-old actor took the lead in Chad’s directorial debut, John Wick, a role he is reprising for upcoming action flick, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

Talking about a leaked set photo of Keanu riding a horse through the streets of New York, Chad told American GQ: “Somebody took that picture while we were shooting in Brooklyn and released it. I thought it was cool. Keanu thought it was cool. I don’t think the studio thought it was cool.

“I’m a big Sergio Leone fan, so no matter what, I was putting Keanu on a horse in this movie. If you’ve got an actor who can ride horses, ride motorcycles, do fight scenes, why not? I made a list of every skill Keanu has – we sat down and I said, ‘Give me everything you can do really well’. And we put all that in the movies. Drive a car, check the box. Ride a horse, check the box. Nobody wanted the horses. I had to fight for that one. People thought it was too weird.”

This year marks 20 years since the pair first began working together, and Chad praised his leading man for his commitment to challenging film roles.

Reflecting on genre defining flick The Matrix, the director shared how Keanu put his all into the part of Neo in the Wachowskis’ cinematic classic.

“I don’t know anyone that puts more into the game, collaboratively, physically, intellectually. I’ve never experienced anyone that could have survived (The Matrix). It just took a different type of person. To be open to that. To allow yourself to be constantly soaking wet, sore, tired, beaten up, for years,” he stated.

Halle Berry: ‘John Wick 3 was the hardest job of my life’

Halle Berry has never faced a greater challenge than the physical training she took on for her new action film John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

The actress portrays assassin Sofia in the movie and she spent several hours a week, sometimes working out twice a day, to get prepared for the physical role.

“I trained for six months straight,” she tells ET Online. “Firearms, fight, all of these martial arts, dog training. I had never been challenged in that way, so, hands down this was the hardest (experience).”

“I never worked so hard in my life, honestly, for a film role ever,” she adds to Extra, before praising co-star and leading man Keanu Reeves for his influence on her workout regimen for the project. “I watched Keanu raise the bar every day so I had no choice but to step up to his level and try to be on par with him the best I could.”

Halle worked with her personal trainer of five years Peter Lee Thomas extensively, as well as John Wick 3 fight trainer Heidi Moneymaker at least five days a week for the film.

She mastered pull-ups and jump rope, while perfecting intense fighting and military style training, such as dragging a 65 pound (30 kilogram) sand bag behind her while sprinting up stairs.

“(The sand bag training) is one of several non-traditional ways of attacking the core,” Thomas tells USA Today. “It truly represents what military personnel fighters go through.”

And he has always been very impressed with Halle’s hard work: “This woman could walk through walls,” the fitness expert adds. “She’s a titan.”

Halle broke three ribs training for John Wick 3, but she is now fully recovered and back in the gym to prepare for her new action film Bruised, which will also mark her directorial debut.

“This woman is so hard-working and tough, I had to tell her to stop,” movie fight trainer Moneymaker recalls of Berry’s commitment. “She did go through a lot of strains and bruises, but even if she was dog-tired, if I said, ‘How do you feel?’ she’d say, ‘Great, let’s go again.'”

Halle Berry isn’t ruling out another Bond girl outing following her showstopping role in 2002’s Die Another Day.

The mother-of-two, who has returned to action roles for the latest John Wick sequel, portrayed Jinx Johnson in the 007 hit, which featured Pierce Brosnan as Bond, and she wouldn’t mind reprising the character – or playing a new femme fatale.

“Maybe not tomorrow, because I’m kind of busy right now so my dance card is sort of full, but in a few years time, if they asked, I’d do it,” she said when asked about returning to the franchise, reports MailOnline.

Recalling her time as a Bond girl, Halle added: “It was one of the best experiences of my career working with that family, so I’m excited to see the new film.”

Daniel Craig will close out his stint as the super sleuth in the 25th, as yet untitled, Bond movie, which began shooting in Jamaica last month. It marks his fifth outing as the English spy.

Speaking to Hello! recently about John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, where she joins Keanu Reeves who’s back as the title character, she explained why she badgered returning director Chad Stahelski for the role of assassin Sofia.

“I knew I was strong enough to do this role which is why I reached out to Chad and told him he didn’t have a choice but to cast me,” she said. “I know I am 52 but I am also strong and active and I am tired of being defined by the number of my birthdays.

“It’s really important that we women start to kick ageism in the face by showing what we can do.”

Actress Anjelica Huston struggled to perfect her Russian accent for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum because her scene extras would confuse her with their pronunciations.

The Witches star, who was born in California but raised in Ireland, had no idea she was going to have to adopt a new twang for her role as the director of a school for assassins until after she had signed on, so she had to rush through her training with a dialect coach.

“I’ve never done Russian before,” she confessed on U.S. morning show Live with Kelly and Ryan. “They (producers) literally made my deal on Friday, and on Monday, I was Russian!”

However, Huston’s job was made all the more complicated after a number of her movie castmates, who were native Russian speakers, tried to correct her on even the most basic of phrases just before cameras started rolling.

“There was a certain dialect (I had to perfect), but there were also a lot of extras in my scenes, and most of them Russian, so although I had a great dialect coach, before I’d go on, they’d all go, ‘Dasvidaniya (goodbye).'”

Huston repeated their pronunciation of the farewell, only for the extras to insist she was doing it all wrong.

“I was completely confused!” she laughed.

Despite the accent trouble, the 67 year old had a lot of fun filming the Keanu Reeves hitman thriller, because she was already a fan of the first two installments, 2014’s John Wick and its 2017 sequel, John Wick: Chapter 2.

“I love these movies!” she smiled.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, which also stars Halle Berry, hits theatres next week (begs13May19).

Halle Berry felt “so much pride” after she and Keanu Reeves nailed a tricky fight sequence for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

The third instalment of the action franchise picks up right where the second left off, with Reeves’ retired assassin John Wick trying to escape New York after having a global bounty of $14 million placed on his head for killing his nemesis inside the Continental hotel.

Berry is a new addition to the cast as a dog-loving hired assassin and Wick’s close friend Sofia, and she spent months training to hold her own besides Reeves.

“We had a scene where we’re on a rug and we had to take down like 12, 14, 15 some-odd guys together on a rug and I thought, ‘Hmm, how is this going to work? How are we not going to knock each other out and throw our guys? This isn’t going to happen,'” she recalled to Entertainment Tonight. “And then I remember when we did it I felt so much pride.

“I felt like, ‘Holy s**t, I just did a movie with Keanu on a rug and we did this s**t!’ I was so amped. That was the moment that it hit me that I was working with Keanu and I was a part of this franchise that I had loved so long.”

In addition to spending five days a week training for six months to learn martial arts, the Oscar winner also had to train with her canine co-stars.

“I worked with these dogs a lot so they could get to know me and I could get to know them,” she explained. “And I could command them on the day and wrangle them a little bit if things went crazy.”

The 52-year-old recently revealed that she broke three ribs rehearsing for the stunts, but she considers the injury “a badge of honour”.

John Wick 3, also starring Anjelica Huston, Ian McShane and Reeves’ old Matrix co-star Laurence Fishburne, hits cinemas from 15 May (19).
