Zoe Kravitz felt “shortly and ungainly” when she was a teenager.
The Big Little Lies star is an ambassador for YSL Beauty, has fronted campaigns for the likes of Saint Laurent and Tiffany & Co., and always flaunts her enviable style on the red carpet.
However, in a cover interview with Elle U.S. magazine, Zoe admitted she didn’t feel confident about her appearance growing up, because she compared herself to her actress mother Lisa Bonet and the models her father Lenny Kravitz dated, such as Adriana Lima.
“I didn’t like my new school. I didn’t feel like I fit in anywhere, and I was surrounded by an enormous amount of beauty and posturing. I was a chunky, perfectly normal-looking 15-year-old, but I had this remarkably beautiful skinny mother and a father who was dating a supermodel, and I felt short and ungainly,” she explained.
The actress soon developed an eating disorder which she suffered from for about a decade, and she remains mindful of her battle.
“I’m okay now,” the 31-year-old insisted. “But I am very vigilant. It’s a disease, and I never let myself forget that.”
Zoe, who married actor Karl Glusman last year, gave the interview to promote her starring role in upcoming miniseries High Fidelity, based on Nick Hornby’s book of the same name.
And the brunette beauty, who considers her love of fashion “an obsession”, revealed that she helped costume designer Colleen Atwood find vintage clothes for her character, including a leather coat that’s similar to the one John Cusack sported in the 2000 film adaptation.
“Most of them are now living in my closet,” she added of the costumes.

Zoe Kravitz and Karl Glusman marked their wedding with custom “Just Married” jackets.
The Big Little Lies star married the 31-year-old actor and musician at her father Lenny Kravitz’s 18th century mansion in Paris, France on 29 June, and Karl has now shared a sweet detail from their intimate nuptials.
“I believe our stars were written before we met, ‘Karl + Zoe, ride or die into the sunset…'” he captioned a photo on Instagram which showed the couple embracing hours after becoming newlyweds.
In the snap, the Nocturnal Animals star shows off the back of his custom black leather jacket, which features a big heart filled with clouds and a portrait of the 30-year-old X-Men: First Class actress and an unfurled scroll across the bottom of the jacket which reads, “Just Married.”
Zoe also had a matching jacket which featured a portrait of her new husband in the heart.
Karl later tagged artist Samantha Urbani as the creator of the unique piece of artwork on the jacket and wrote: “@samandude made the COOLEST jackets EVER!”
The artist shared a video of the duo dancing in their new jackets and wrote, “Only the coolest couple could inspire the coolest jackets, it was almost as fun making them as watching you get down in them.”
The couple exchanged vows in a chic Parisian ceremony in front of guests including her mother Lisa Bonet, her stepfather Jason Momoa, and her Big Little Lies co-stars Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Reese Witherspoon.
Many of the famous faces invited to the wedding had also joined the bride and groom at their rehearsal dinner at the Laperouse restaurant the night before the nuptials.
Zoe and Karl began dating in 2016, and became engaged in February last year.

Zoe Kravitz’s stylist is sneaking her wedding dress fittings in by taking the busy star’s gown along to other meetings.
Zoe secretly tied the knot with actor Karl Glusman in May but is planning a big bash with all her friends and family in Paris later this month.
Around her work commitments, which include promoting the second season of Big Little Lies, the award-winning HBO series she stars in alongside Reese Witherspoon, Kidman Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and now Meryl Streep, upcoming TV show High Fidelity and new movie Viena and the Fantomes, the 30-year-old is perfecting her bridal look, with the help of her longtime friend and stylist Andrew Mukamal.
“We’re both very busy people, so I’m sneaking all of her wedding fittings in by tacking them on to other meetings,” he told British Vogue. “It’s going to be such an incredible, memorable weekend.
“Getting to dress one of your closest friends for such a big moment is the dream. I’m so confident in the vision of what I see her wearing and what she would want to wear that it’s easy… fluid.”
Zoe, who covers the latest issue of the British fashion glossy, has been working with Andrew for nearly seven years, and together they have created show-stopping looks for events such as the Oscars and the Met Gala.
Explaining how Zoe always has input in her red carpet outfits, Andrew gushed: “(She) has a vision for herself and her life. She never says, ‘Styling is your job, you do it.’ We’re in it together. And she has a hawk eye for detail. If something doesn’t sit right, she’s on it.”

Zoe Kravitz found her dream engagement ring while scrolling through Instagram.
The Big Little Lies actress shared in an interview with Rolling Stone in October (18) that she had been engaged to her long-time boyfriend Karl Glusman since February.
Zoe has since been spotted wearing a gorgeous vintage-style ring, and in an interview with W magazine, divulged that she first saw the sparkler on the social media page for antique jewellery store The One I Love.
“I follow (the owner) on Instagram and would always look at her rings,” she told the publication. “There was one from the 18th century that I saved because I thought it was so beautiful, and I had no idea that my friend had told him about. So he went the extra mile to get me something that I’d really love.”
In addition to promoting her role in new movie Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and shooting TV series High Fidelity, Zoe has also been tapped to star in Tiffany & Co.’s new Believe In Dreams holiday campaign. The advertising also features Karen Elson, Maye Musk and Naomi Campbell, and the star explained that working with the U.S. luxury jeweller was important to her because she owns several sentimental pieces from the brand.
“I have some beautiful pieces passed down from both of my grandmothers. I have two Tiffany’s sets that they gifted me, which I’m in love with, and a necklace from the Paper Flowers collection that’s so beautiful,” the 29-year-old smiled.
Meanwhile, Zoe shared that she doesn’t actually wear that much jewellery on a daily basis, apart from her engagement ring and earrings. She also dons a Tiffany pinky ring most days and a pair of studs.
“I’m wearing my Tiffany studs all the time, too. I’m really into kind of simple, classic jewellery right now,” she added.
