Broadway star Alex Brightman has reportedly been cast as John Belushi in an upcoming biopic.

A biographical film about the late Saturday Night Live star has been in development for years, with Todd Phillips and Steven Conrad both tapped to direct at different times, with Emile Hirsch attached to star, but the project stalled around 2014.

Now, according to editors at Collider, the project is back in development again, with The Devil Wears Prada’s David Frankel in the frame to direct and Tony Award-nominated Broadway actor Brightman, who is best known for starring in the School of Rock and Beetlejuice stage adaptations, attached to play Belushi.

Masters of Sex actress Annaleigh Ashford is in the running to play Belushi’s girlfriend-turned-wife Judith, while comedian John Mulaney has been offered the role of Belushi’s good friend and SNL co-star Dan Aykroyd.

The script, which was originally written by Conrad, is expected to feature many other famous characters such as SNL boss Lorne Michaels and star Gilda Radner, journalist Barbara Walters, screen legend Jack Nicholson, and musicians Keith Richards, James Taylor, and Paul Simon.

Judith is reportedly involved in the project and is expected to serve as an executive producer, alongside Alexandra Milchan and Scott Lambert.

The film, currently known as Belushi, is expected to follow Belushi at the height of his fame, during which he had memorable roles in The Blues Brothers and National Lampoon’s Animal House. The comedian died at the age of 33 from a drug overdose at the Chateau Marmont in 1982.

Michael Chiklis previously played the comic in the 1989 biopic Wired, which received an overwhelmingly negative response from critics as well as Belushi’s friends and family, with Aykroyd once telling MTV, “I hope it never gets seen.”

Keith Richards’ style called on for new Amazon show Good Omens

Rolling Stones rocker Keith Richards inspired the costumes David Tennant wears in new show Good Omens.

Amazon’s apocalyptic comedy, which also stars Michael Sheen, Frances McDormand, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Jon Hamm, is a tale of the bungling of Armageddon and features an angel, a demon, an eleven-year-old Antichrist, and a doomsaying witch.

For David’s demon character Crowley, costume designer Claire Anderson looked to the music world.

“David moves like Keith Richards did in the ’60s,” she said to The Hollywood Reporter. “(I designed textured jackets with big lapels that) allow(ed) his shirt fabric to tumble when open.”

She also painted snakeskin shoes black with red around the soles to mimic the “red banding of the snake in the Garden of Eden”.

For Jon, who plays Archangel Gabriel, Claire decided on sleek tailoring.

“We went to the Italian label (Ermenegildo) Zegna on Bond Street (in London), as I wanted the softness of cashmere for his character,” she shared. “He looked wonderful in a tailored pearl grey suit with a hint of lilac. We gave him lilac contact lenses to bring out the coat and the violet in his eyes.”

And with Michael, who plays angel of the Eastern Gate, Aziraphale, Claire was inspired by pre-Raphaelite paintings, “because religion was so fervently strong in that era”.

The series spans 40-plus periods in history, including the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and World War II, with the costumes worn by the core cast needing to cross all timelines.

Good Omens is available to stream from 31 May.

John Varvatos’ partnership with Nick Jonas was a natural fit because the designer is such a big fan of music.

John, 55, and 26-year-old musician Nick formed a friendship after meeting at a dinner party in 2016. That soon blossomed into a business partnership, with Nick and John creating a new clothing collection, JV x NJ, which marks the first time the designer’s namesake label has ever joined forces with anyone.

“For as long as I can remember, music was my way to transport myself to another place,” John told the New York Post, explaining what inspires him.

Over the years John has been heavily influenced by music icons like Jimi Hendrix, Iggy Pop and Keith Richards, and even wrote a book, Rock in Fashion, documenting the elements of rock style that have embodied the music community for decades.

With Nick, he’s kept up his edgy aesthetic, blending it with the singer’s more traditional style.

“Nick is kind of a classic guy with a twist. And that’s really right where my brand sits,” he explained.

“They still have a cool edge to them, but they feel timeless because they’re authentic.”

Together, John and Jealous singer Nick came up with six pieces designed to go from season to season.

Included in the JV x NJ line is a dark grey motorcycle jacket, two T-shirts, a hoodie, bomber jacket and shirt jacket.

“Nick wanted this piece (motorcycle jacket) that felt really tough and slim without being constricting,” the designer shared.

Nick also fronts the campaign for the new venture, which is available now.

“It’s rooted where mine is,” John said of his partner’s creative philosophy. “It’s not about overdesigning, but all in the details: the perfect fit, the perfect fabrics. It’s hard to create really simple pieces and have them be special.”
