Beanie Feldstein has slammed the “damaging” way that society views being thin as a positive.
The Lady Bird actress lost weight in 2018 due to a physically gruelling 10-month run in Broadway musical Hello, Dolly! and received many compliments about her new figure, with people praising her new “tiny” look. Beanie got so irritated by the remarks that she wrote an article begging people to “please stop complimenting me on my body” and she received hundreds of replies from those who also found praise of their thinner frame distressing.
“So many people said, ‘They’re telling me I look incredible, and I’m ill’,” she recalled to Independent.co.uk. “Our society has conflated thinness with goodness. ‘Thin equals good, fat equals bad.’ And I think it’s so damaging. It’s frightening, honestly.”
The 27-year-old dislikes how society is obsessed with reporting the ups and downs of people’s, particularly women’s, bodies, and she hopes one day every shape and size will be accepted.
“Our society is so deeply obsessed with tracking and monitoring people’s bodies and it’s so ridiculous to me,” she continued. “Our bodies are these beautiful things, and they can be strong or sexy or cosy. They’re our vehicle to get through the world. My biggest hope for society is just to accept people where they are in that given moment and to not really give a damn.”
The actress explained that when she was younger, she felt she had to include her size “in my narrative of myself” but she now refuses to accept that and wants to be a part of films that share this attitude.
“I want to be a part of art that refuses to accept it as well. I’m very specific about parts I take in terms of how they discuss bodies,” Beanie stated.

Beanie Feldstein felt “daunted” by her new movie How to Build a Girl because it was the first time she had led a project on her own.
The 26-year-old found fame and won critical acclaim with her supporting or co-lead roles in films such as Lady Bird and Booksmart, but with How to Build a Girl, she leads the film entirely on her own.
In an interview with Teen Vogue, Beanie admitted she was apprehensive about the prospect of the being the solo lead and made sure she treated the crew well.
“How to Build a Girl was the first time I had ever led a film by myself. I was so daunted by it and so intimidated,” she shared. “And I remember saying to my mom on the phone from London, ‘You know what? I don’t know if I’m a good actor, I don’t know if the crew will remember me as a good actor or if they think I am, but I don’t care.’ What I care about is them saying, ‘Oh, Beanie Feldstein she was really kind, she was really respectful.’ And that really genuinely is more important to me than people saying, she was so talented but she was rude.”
In the British coming-of-age flick, based on journalist Caitlin Moran’s semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, Beanie plays Johanna Morrigan, a teenager living in Wolverhampton, England, who becomes a writer for a music magazine.
She eventually gets her own column with an editor, played by Emma Thompson, and the American star was thrilled to work alongside the Harry Potter actress.
“To get to work with Emma Thompson is like, I still can’t believe it happened,” she gushed. “She arrived wearing dungarees and brought chocolate for the entire crew. I was like, ‘Oh, so she’s a magic person. She is from Hogwarts.'”
How to Build a Girl, also starring Chris O’Dowd and Alfie Allen, was released digitally in the U.S. earlier this month.

Beanie Feldstein still continues to wear jeans around the house during lockdown.
While the vast majority of people have ditched restrictive clothing and have been spending the coronavirus lockdown days in comfortable sweatpants, the Booksmart star hasn’t given up her jeans because putting on “real clothes” makes her feel like her normal self.
“I’m someone who puts on jeans,” she admitted to The Hollywood Reporter. “Jeans but no shoes is what I’ve learned about myself. When I work out I’m wearing workout shoes, but the rest of the day is purely an UGG slipper. And not always jeans, sometimes a dress or skirt, but I have to put on real clothes, even if I’m not doing a Zoom or seeing somebody virtually.
“I just don’t feel like myself unless I shower, wash my hair, put on jeans. It makes me feel better, and then it’s fun at the end of the day to be like, ‘Oh I get to put on sweatpants now.'”
The 26-year-old also takes part in trivia nights over Zoom with her friends and they are all required to dress up in accordance with that week’s theme using pieces from their existing wardrobe.
“You have to come in costume, too… My friends definitely have a flair for the dramatic,” she joked. “Obviously we’re all at home and we don’t have access to the real costumes, but it’s really fun to see how inventive people can get. Last night was pop divas and there was an amazing one with Beyonce’s headdresses made out of a visor that my friend decorated. People get very creative.”
The Lady Bird star is currently in lockdown at her parents’ Los Angeles home, where she has been doing virtual press for her new movie How to Build a Girl.

Greta Gerwig was unable to vote for herself for a Best Director Oscar because she’s a member of the Academy’s acting branch.
The 36-year-old first rose to fame as an actress in films such as Frances Ha, No Strings Attached, and Jackie, so when she was asked to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in 2016, she was invited as an actor, meaning she can only vote on the acting categories for the annual Academy Awards.
However, Gerwig recently moved into writing and directing with 2017’s Lady Bird and 2019’s Little Women, for which many hoped she would be nominated for Best Director. She was ultimately snubbed in the category in favour of all-male nominees, something which caused an uproar on social media.
In an interview with Variety, Gerwig said that while she had no expectations of being nominated, “there was clearly a chance,” and added, “There’s probably a handful of votes that went that way. I mean, mine did – oh no, I can’t!”
The filmmaker then explained that she was planning to switch branches from acting to directing and commented: “I think that the directors’ branch could probably stand to bolster its lady numbers… This will go to the top of my to-do list!”
Little Women received six Oscar nominations, including a nod for Best Picture. And Gerwig was also thrilled that her partner Noah Baumbach landed six nominations for his movie Marriage Story.
“It felt like it (the Best Picture nomination) was for everyone… So, there was a lot of ecstatic texting among the Little Women chain,” she continued. “Noah’s across the room, and he was like, ‘I got six too!’ I don’t know, it was an amazing day.”
Elsewhere, Gerwig confessed that she had been carefully monitoring the impressive box office performance of Little Women because she knows the takings dictate whether she gets another opportunity to direct, something she really wants.

Saoirse Ronan was “fully terrified every day” on the set of Lady Bird because she was worried about ruining the film.
The Irish actress starred in the lead role in Greta Gerwig’s 2017 directorial debut and went on to be nominated for an Oscar, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe, with her taking home the latter.
However, Ronan has now revealed that she was constantly worried she was doing a bad job while filming the high school drama.
“With something like Lady Bird, I was fully terrified every day. I felt, ‘I’m going to ruin this. I’m going to mess it up.’ I really felt that,” she told Variety magazine. “It was a great experience, but I was constantly on the phone to my mom or my friends saying, ‘I can’t do it.’”
Gerwig explained that the three-time Oscar nominee was worried that she wouldn’t find the character.
“She was scared,” the director recalled. “I drove her around everywhere because she had to go to doctors’ appointments and different things to get cleared to film. She was really worried. I always knew she would be great, but she was really concerned she wouldn’t be able to find the character.”
The duo has since reunited for the latest adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel Little Women, in which Ronan stars as Jo March, a character she was more confident about.
“She just knew she could do it,” Gerwig shared, while the 25-year-old added, “I was ready to jump out of line and take it on. Jo is such an important figure for so many girls, and I didn’t feel daunted by it. I was precious with her.”
Little Women, which also stars Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, Timothee Chalamet, and Laura Dern, is in cinemas now.

Saoirse Ronan has spoken out in support of her Little Women director Greta Gerwig after she was snubbed by the Golden Globes.
Earlier this week, the nominees for the 2020 Golden Globes were announced, revealing that the battle for Best Director would be between Bong Joon-ho for Parasite, Sam Mendes for 1917, Todd Phillips for Joker, Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, and Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Social media users were outraged by the lack of female directors and highlighted the work of Gerwig, Alma Har’el, who helmed Honey Boy, and Marielle Heller, who directed Tom Hanks in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
And Ronan has now shared her disappointment at the lack of recognition for the 36-year-old filmmaker, joining her Little Women co-star Laura Dern in voicing her concern at the inequality in Hollywood.
“She has made one of the best movies of the year,” she told the Today show. “Laura made a really good point yesterday in that in a way it’s sort of vital for something like this to happen, because it reminds us of how far, obviously, we still need to go.”
Gerwig, who scooped a Best Director Oscar nomination for her 2017 movie Lady Bird, which also starred Ronan, has yet to comment on the snub. But the 25-year-old actress was full of praise for her friend and director.
“She is a really brilliant filmmaker. We wouldn’t be here without her. Our performances rely so much on one another, but Greta is the one who brought us all together, and she’s the mastermind of the whole thing,” Ronan gushed.
The 2020 Golden Globes will take place on 5 January.

Noah Baumbach believes his partner Greta Gerwig helped improve him as a writer because he was always trying to impress her when they worked together.
The Marriage Story director met the actress while casting his 2010 film Greenberg and they went on to co-write the screenplay for 2012 film Frances Ha and become a couple.
During an interview as part of the BAFTA Screenwriters’ Lecture Series, Baumbach replied, “Absolutely” when asked if his collaborations with Gerwig helped improve him as a writer.
“If for no other reason I was trying to impress her,” he explained. “She would send me scenes and boy it was so good, it was so exciting to the point that, if I knew maybe a scene was coming, I’d just be refreshing email hoping it would come through. It would always make me feel good if she liked what I sent her or laughed at a thing or something like that. So certainly, on those movies, but I know I’ve improved as a human being because of her and as a director at least in my eyes from watching her, from working with her, and watching her movies now too.”
The pair co-wrote 2015’s Mistress America, which also starred Gerwig, who has since gone on to write and direct her own films, Lady Bird and Little Women. Although they’re not officially listed as co-writers on each other’s projects, they are “always very involved” in the other’s work.
In a new cover interview with Vogue magazine, Gerwig, 36, admitted she was “frustrated” that journalists considered her Baumbach’s muse rather than co-writer in the beginning and questioned whether he opened doors for her.
“The answer is: Yes, of course, for so many reasons. But he’s also this incredibly important collaborator and influence on me. The most important,” she said. “But I think I was hell-bent on making my own films, so I would’ve done it anyway.”

The Lady Bird director was nine years old when she first spotted models wearing grunge clothes such as flannel shirts, silk floral dresses, knit hats, and Nirvana T-shirts in Vogue magazine back in 1992. Accordingly, Greta was instantly drawn in by the outfits.
“Grunge was messy. It was sloppy. I was messy. I was sloppy. I thought it was superficial to be any other way. My mother was horrified by how carelessly I treated my clothes, never folding anything,” she wrote in an essay for U.S. Vogue magazine. “But I had found grunge, and I happily barrelled forward.”
Greta was gifted Dr. Martens boots for her birthday and would pair them with cut-off jeans and a Hawaiian shirt from her father’s wardrobe. However, when grunge gave way to pop music, as driven by the likes of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, the star toned down her signature style.
“I started editing myself down. No one would have described me as a wallflower, but I taught myself how to look demure, how to present myself as a girl who wouldn’t be much trouble at all,” the 36-year-old recalled. “I begged my mother for one of those Bebe tops that had BEBE written in rhinestones. My mom, bless her, said no.”
It wasn’t until Greta attended Barnard College and found the women there were “dressing to please themselves” that she returned to “what I had known (in) 1992”.
“Even though it was buried deep in my psyche, those images of girls in their flannel and boots, seen before I lost my way, gave me an idea of a freedom that I had only begun to imagine. They told me that my tribe was out there, somewhere. That there was a form to it. That I only had to go find it,” she concluded.

Saoirse Ronan feels like she can try anything with director Greta Gerwig.
The three-time Oscar nominee has reunited with the filmmaker for the upcoming adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel Little Women, alongside Timothee Chalamet, Laura Dern, Emma Watson, and Florence Pugh.
Ronan plays strong-willed tomboy Jo March, who strikes up a passionate friendship with Theodore ‘Laurie’ Laurence, played by fellow Oscar nominee Chalamet.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the 25-year-old actress was full of praise for Gerwig, saying that the director can make her do anything, from a long night shoot to film a dance scene that eventually took 30 takes to unleashing her emotions for a pivotal scene with Chalamet.
“Emotions just bubble over. (Greta) just let us go with it, wherever it went, from take to take. What I loved about that scene is that every take would be different emotionally. It didn’t have the same trajectory,” Ronan said. “The two of us, it’s a relationship I have with no other director. She makes me feel like I can try anything.”
Little Women served as a reunion for Ronan, Gerwig and Chalamet, who last worked together on 2017’s critically acclaimed comedy-drama Lady Bird.
And Ronan was excited to be back together with the 23-year-old heartthrob as the duo formed a close friendship while working on the award-winning independent drama.
“He keeps me on my toes – I’m never quite sure what he’s going to do next. That only progressed more and grew more. It helped that we do have a very natural rapport with each other… These two characters physically need to be very comfortable with one another. They’re literally intertwined for half the film,” she said of their roles in Little Women.
“In the least cliched way possible, it really doesn’t feel like (I’m) acting sometimes (with her),” Chalamet sweetly added.

Beanie Feldstein feels more comfortable playing “the supportive role” on film.
The 26-year-old, the sister of Jonah Hill, found success playing the best friend of Saoirse Ronan in 2017’s Lady Bird, and went on to receive acclaim for Booksmart, which she lead with Kaitlyn Dever.
She followed that up with How to Build a Girl, the adaptation of journalist Caitlin Moran’s novel which follows a girl who transforms from an unpopular loner to a ruthless music writer.
In an interview with Teen Vogue, Beanie confessed that it was challenging being the lead and “not having another person to create energy with and bounce off of.”
“I feel so much more comfortable being the supportive role,” she added.
While Beanie was filming How to Build a Girl, Kaitlyn was filming Netflix series Unbelievable, another intense and solitary role, and they would text each other and say, “Where are you?! I’m alone out here and I miss looking at your face.”
How to Build a Girl required Beanie to master a regional British accent and, for one scene, wear a swimsuit made out of plastic bags, and she admitted that any time she felt nervous or intimidated during filming she would think about the impact it will have on young girls.
“Imagine if I had seen a girl with my body and my spirit on camera in a trash-bag bikini? That’s powerful stuff,” she gushed. “I just feel honoured to be a part of stories that, had I been 15 when they came out, I would have been first in line at the movie theatre.”
