Helena Christensen is fronting an inclusive new campaign for Victoria’s Secret.

The U.S. lingerie label has taken a hit in recent years, with critics calling out executives for failing to promote diversity and a range of body types in their advertising and annual fashion shows.

However, bosses are now appearing to take the backlash seriously, and on Thursday, unveiled the spring 2020 marketing imagery for The Body by Victoria collection.

The main photo features veteran Victoria’s Secret Angel Christensen, 51, posing alongside Barbara Palvin, Romee Strijd, Valentina Sampaio, and Solange van Doorn in black and beige underwear sets.

Palvin and van Doorn are both known for embracing their natural curves, while Brazilian star Sampaio made history last August when she became the first-ever transgender model to work for Victoria’s Secret.

In addition, experienced photographer Christensen helmed the rest of the photoshoot, with the other snaps including the likes of curvy model Candice Huffine, Joan Smalls, Daniela Pestova, Jasmine Tookes, and Lais Ribeiro.

Marketing bosses at Victoria’s Secret appeared to want to take a low-key approach to the relaunch, with the campaign promoted on the company’s website but not yet on Instagram.

In addition, the brand has been affected by the coronavirus crisis sweeping the world, with executives announcing on Thursday that they will be temporarily closing the online store and boutiques across North America to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“Responding safely and responsibly is one way we continue to show our appreciation for those who make Victoria’s Secret possible, especially during difficult times,” a spokesperson wrote on Instagram. “While our associates are home with their loved ones, we’ll support them with full pay. We’re also working on addition ways to provide support through our home communities for those who may need an outstretched hand.”

Romee Strijd has decided to place less importance on the way she looks in 2020.

The Victoria’s Secret Angel wrote a lengthy post on Instagram on Monday in which she told her followers her mindset has shifted when it comes to her looks and she’s come to realise she’s got more to offer than just her appearance.

In the post, Romee candidly revealed how she used to be so focused on her looks that she would put pressure on herself to look perfect at all times and would feel guilty when she didn’t.

“I’ve been thinking about how keeping up with the perfect image affected me, when I went to a birthday, to a party, to work, to an event, I always felt the pressure to look perfect, because I’m Romee, the model, so people are gonna judge about the fact how I look in real life,” she wrote. “When I let go of food or the way I look.. I immediately feel guilt.. because most of the times I have to work any time soon, so it stresses me out.. cause I gotta look good.

“This year, I realised we are not just looks.. we shouldn’t identify ourselves with our looks… it’s absolutely not about that.. We’re way more than that, all of us, it’s about the personality you have, they way you treat other people, the love and the laughs you share.. thats gonna fullfill you (sic).”

The 24-year-old praised the fashion industry for embracing diversity and “realness” and explained that she would continue to take care of her body and health “but not for the way I look but the way I feel”.

Her post was praised by her fellow models, such as Lais Ribeiro, who wrote, “I’m proud of you mama!” and Nina Agdal, who commented, “Amen sister” with the praying hands emoji.

Prabal Gurung has explored the question of “Who Gets to Be American?” with his latest collection.

The Nepalese-American designer unveiled his spring/summer 2020 line as part of New York Fashion Week on Monday night, with the event drawing a huge crowd. In his show notes, Gurung explained that he wanted to use his designs to make a statement about the treatment of immigrants in the United States, especially in relation to some of President Donald Trump’s divisive policies.

“To me, this country has always been a beacon of hope where one’s wildest ambitions can come true, a melting pot that is colourful, multicultural, and beautiful,” he shared. “In the last few years, incited by the divisive rhetoric of our current administration, I’ve considered the many faces of America and how we should seek to redefine it. I recall sitting in a business meeting, spiritedly challenging this very notion, and being met with a pointed, ‘Well, you don’t look American, so how can you define what America is?'”

Reflecting Gurung’s viewpoint, the line included a pastiche of different references, with fabrics referencing cultural prints as well as classic American clothing.

Diversity was also championed on the runway, with Chinese model Lina Zhang opening the presentation in a white cotton dress with a floral bouquet attached to the hip, and other models including Yoon Young Bae, Paloma Elsesser, Lais Ribeiro, and Lindsey Wixson.

Highlights of the line included raw denim cargo trousers, utilitarian jumpsuits, parkas, and sustainable hand-dyed cashmere knits, while Gurung concluded the show by having the models parade the runway with beauty pageant sashes embroidered with the words, “Who Gets to Be American?”

“This is all deeply personal to me. Though my roots lay with my family in Nepal, this country is my home. America is where my heart is. I am an American,” the 40-year-old added. “As immigrants continue to birth this ‘New America’, we must remember all versions of our history and take ownership of our past while forging a new legacy. Amidst the deep wounds that are severing the unity of our country, I continue to seek the America I came here to be a part of – the America that I know is still there. And so, with the spring 2020 collection, we seek to celebrate hope, courage, and present an ode to the true American dream.”

New York Fashion Week continues on Tuesday with presentations from Vera Wang, Pamella Roland, Coach, and Oscar de la Renta.

Lais Ribeiro is engaged to professional basketball player Joakim Noah.

The Brazilian model, who is perhaps best known for her work as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, took to Instagram over the weekend to announce that her beau, who she began dating in September 2018, proposed to her during the recent Burning Man festival in Nevada.

Posting a photo of the proposal, Lais, 28, wrote: “I’m a bit late for Burning Man pics and of course I didn’t touch my phone for five days and I don’t have a single pic. But thanks to my Bff @jeromeduran he captured one of the best moments in my life!”

She added: “@stickity13 surprised me at my fav (favourite) place in the world and proposed. And I couldn’t be happier! We are getting married guys.”

Meanwhile, Joakim uploaded two sweet photos of himself and Lais at the festival.

“Proposing to you was the easiest decision of my life,” the 34-year-old gushed in the caption. “Seeing that smile riding the playa at the burn… I will never forget that… I know you know because I tell you every day. I love u (you). On another note, this wedding is about to be lit.”

Following the happy news, a number of Lais’s fellow models posted congratulatory messages.

Jasmine Tookes wrote, “FINALLLLLLY YAYYYAYAY (sic),” while Shanina Shaik stated, “So happy for you babe!! Love you!!!!”

And Josephine Skriver added, “Congratulations!! Couldn’t be happier for you guys. Welcome to the engaged club! Love you guys so much!!!”

Lais Ribeiro has thanked Adriana Lima for giving her the confidence to wear whatever she wants.

The Victoria’s Secret Angel originally studied to be a nurse in her native Brazil and was convinced to try modelling a year after giving birth to her son, Alexandre.

While she’s walked the runway for the likes of Chanel, Gucci, Versace, Louis Vuitton, and Marc Jacobs, plus the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show a whopping eight times, Ribeiro doesn’t think of her style as “effortless”.

“I’m not the person who really follows, ‘Oh my God, this trend.’ I would be curious to try it on and if I like it, ‘Yes, let’s do it,’ but I have to feel good putting something on, for sure,” the 28-year-old told Fashionista. “Adriana Lima is always like that. She’s like, ‘I like this, I’m gonna put it on.’ Anyway, she just gave me that confidence to wear whatever you want, because you feel good in it and you don’t need to please everybody.”

The model, who has appeared in campaigns for Ralph Lauren, Christian Dior and Tom Ford too, travels to Tulum in Mexico on a regular basis, and also revealed that her style is heavily influenced by the historical beach town.

“I travel a lot to the beach, so I love Tulum and their style and it’s so very casual. The only thing I really like these days are beach clothes. I’m always at the beach. There’s one street in Tulum with all these shops and crystals that is very my style, as well,” she shared.

Leomie Anderson has praised fellow Victoria’s Secret Angel Lais Ribeiro for welcoming her so warmly into the brand family.

The London-born fashion star, who has modelled for the likes of Jeremy Scott, Tom Ford, and Vivienne Westwood, was announced as the lingerie label’s newest Angel earlier this month (Apr19).

And in an interview with HOLA! USA, Leomie revealed she found out about the honour when she was shooting alongside Lais – who was quick to offer her support and tips about being a Victoria’s Secret ambassador.

“The first day that I ever shot Victoria’s Secret was actually the day I got announced, and I was shooting with Lais,” she smiled. “And she really has made me feel very welcome. She gave me a lot of tips on being a part of Victoria’s Secret family. So nothing bad, no pranks, just a lot of love.”

As for whether she’s received any advice from other Victoria’s Secret veterans, Leomie added: “I spoke to Sara (Sampaio) literally just yesterday. She just told me to be myself. That’s what Victoria’s Secret is about.”

Leomie, 26, first walked in a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 2015 and has since gone on to appear in all subsequent spectacles. She’s also known for her popular videos, with her posts including everything from make-up tutorials to travel diaries, and spoke about her best advice for keeping in shape during the chat with the Spanish publication.

“Just listen to your body,” she advised. “Hydrate, always drink a lot of water. And try new things as well. If you don’t like one form of exercise, you can definitely find other things that you’re really interested in. For me, sometimes I hate going to the gym, but I like going to a dance class. Just find your thing.”

Lais Ribeiro was apprehensive about wearing high heels during the 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

The brand held its annual lingerie extravaganza on 8 November (18), featuring supermodels such as Kendall Jenner, sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid, and many Victoria’s Secret veterans including Candice Swanepoel and Adriana Lima, who also announced her retirement during the show.

This was Lais’ eighth time walking in the event, and though she has perfected her model walk in the highest of heels, she was a little nervous on this occasion due to a recent injury.

“I’m a little scared because I broke my toe about a month ago!” she explained to HollywoodLife.com before the show. “And I didn’t wear high heels yet, so we will see on the runway (sic)!”

The event aired on U.S. television on Sunday (02Dec18), and the likes of Shanina Shaik, Winnie Harlow, and Stella Maxwell all tuned in at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Viewing Party at Spring Studios in New York.

The pack was led by Elsa Hosk, who this year was given the honour of wearing the prestigious Fantasy Bra. And having been selected to wear the garment at last year’s show, Lais was delighted for her fellow model.

“I was just so happy, I didn’t have a chance to tell her anything yet but I’m really happy for her, she worked so hard,” the 28-year-old gushed. “It’s so special, so emotional, so I’ll have a talk with her before she walks!”

Luckily, the Brazilian star was equally enthusiastic about the outfits she had to wear on the night.

“Both of my looks are pretty great,” Lais smiled. “One is black with a cape and wings with stars. The other is like a feather, it’s so light. It gives you (freedom) to blow a kiss, whatever!”

Lais Ribeiro feared she’d miss out on the 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show due to a broken bone in her foot.

The Brazilian model has worked with the U.S. lingerie giant since 2010, and wore the Victoria’s Secret Fantasy Bra at the 2017 spectacle held in Shanghai, China.

Though Lais has spent the last couple of months preparing for the next show, to be held in New York on 8 November, she has now shared that she was scared she might have to skip the event due to an injury.

“I broke a bone in my foot recently and I was worried that I’d have to sit this year out. So, my goal this year my goal was to (actually) walk in the show but all good – it’s healed. I am taking it easier, though,” she told Elle.com of her preparation. “I started doing Pilates and realised that it’s much better for my body. I am not tired all the time, so Pilates is definitely key for me.”

Previously, Lais was forced to pull out of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 2012 after she sprained her ankle in rehearsals.

And the brunette beauty says that walking with the runway while sporting large wings is no easy task.

“Sometimes the big wings make me feel like I’m bouncing while walking. And then I’m thinking, ‘How are my facial expressions, how am I walking?’ There are a lot of things going on at once, so I just try to focus,” the 28-year-old shared of her thoughts while strutting her stuff on the catwalk.

The 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will feature veterans like Adriana Lima, Behati Prinsloo, and Candice Swanepoel, with other returning faces including Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Elsa Hosk, Jasmine Tookes, Josephine Skriver, Martha Hunt, Romee Strijd, Sara Sampaio, Stella Maxwell, and Taylor Hill.

Bebe Rexha, The Chainsmokers, Halsey, Kelsea Ballerini, Rita Ora, and Shawn Mendes will be among the musical performers.

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will air in the U.S. on the ABC network on 2 December.

Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner will walk in the 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

The American models both skipped last year’s lingerie spectacle held in Shanghai, as Gigi reportedly had her visa denied by local officials and Kendall had committed to modelling for rival brand La Perla instead.

However, producers of the upcoming event have now confirmed both fashion stars will return to the stage in New York City, where they will join Victoria’s Secret models including Gigi’s younger sister Bella Hadid, Elsa Hosk, Jasmine Tookes, Josephine Skriver, Lais Ribeiro, Martha Hunt, Romee Strijd, Sara Sampaio, Stella Maxwell and Taylor Hill.

“The show is a year-long production, and 2018 promises to be our most ambitious yet,” said Victoria’s Secret executive producer Ed Razek in a statement. “We have more musical guests, more fashion and more stories than ever; and, of course, 60 of the world’s top models.”

In addition, Victoria’s Secret veteran Adriana Lima will appear, as will Behati Prinsloo, who is back after a three-year hiatus following the birth of her second daughter Gio Grace in February, and Candice Swanepoel, who welcomed her second child, a son named Ariel, in June.

A number of musical guests are to perform at the show, including Bebe Rexha, The Chainsmokers, Halsey, Kelsea Ballerini, Rita Ora, Shawn Mendes and The Struts.

While the models will showcase a limited-edition line created in collaboration with London-based designer Mary Katrantzou.

“Only one show brings together the biggest names in music and the top models around the globe for an exciting hour of entertainment and style,” added Rob Mills, senior vice president, alternative series, late night & specials, ABC. “We couldn’t be happier to work with this iconic brand and bring The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show to ABC.”

Candice Swanepoel is walking in the 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

The supermodel will return to the runway just five months after giving birth to her second son Ariel, whom she welcomed with fiance Hermann Nicoli in June (18).

With many of her fans worried that mothering duties could make her a no-show for the lingerie brand’s annual extravaganza, Candice confirmed she would be returning to the fashion show with a post on her Instagram stories, as reported by editors at Vogue Australia on Monday (15Oct18).

The fashion show is taking place in New York in November, following a two-year hiatus abroad with stints in Shanghai, China and Paris, France. It was also recently confirmed that Victoria’s Secret had tapped Mary Katrantzou to create pieces for the event, taking over from Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing, who was 2017’s designer.

Another model returning to the catwalk is mother-of-two Behati Prinsloo, who took a break from the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show following the birth of her daughters Dusty, two, and Gio, eight months.

“I’m coming back this year. I missed two years, so I’m really excited to walk this year,” she divulged during a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.

Lais Ribeiro, Martha Hunt, Stella Maxwell, Leomie Anderson and Devon Windsor are also returning, while there will also be plenty of new faces such as Duckie Thot and Winnie Harlow.

“I can’t believe this!!” Winnie exclaimed on Instagram, following her casting. “Thank you for giving me all the energy and kindness in that room! Thank you for allowing me to walk for VICTORIA’S SECRET!”

Other models include Georgia Fowler, Grace Elizabeth and Kelsey Merritt, the first Filipino model to walk in the show.
