Charlize Theron turned down the chance to play mutant superhero Jean Grey in X-Men.
The film’s executive producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter, along with screenwriter David Hayter, celebrated the 20th anniversary of the hit 2000 movie in an interview with Observer, and revealed a few secrets from behind the scenes.
While Russell Crowe famously turned down the role of Wolverine, leading to Hugh Jackman landing the coveted gig instead, Hayter revealed that not only did Oscar winner Theron decline a part in the flick, but Patrick Stewart was also in doubt.
Recalling how he and director Bryan Singer flew out to Vancouver in Canada to offer the Monster star the role of Jean Grey, which she ultimately passed on, Hayter said that Stewart, who portrayed wheelchair-bound Professor Charles Xavier, was also reluctant to sign on.
“Patrick Stewart didn’t want to. It took a long time to convince him,” he shared. “Terence Stamp told me, ‘You know why Patrick doesn’t want to do it? Because of the chair. He doesn’t want to be stuck in the chair. But I don’t mind. In fact, I also look excellent bald.'”
There was also plenty of interest from celebrities who wanted to be involved in the film.
“I have lots of warm memories of people that came in wanting to be in the movie,” Winter recalled. “Michael Jackson was a big comic fan and wanted to play Charles Xavier. Shaquille O’Neal showed up at the offices and wanted to play Forge, who wasn’t in the movie.”
“Everyday I was surprised by the faces coming in. Like, I’d find Mariah Carey sitting in my office wanting to go talk to Bryan about being Storm or something. So that’s always shocking,” Hayter added.
Famke Janssen eventually landed the part of Jean Grey and went on to play the telepathic and telekinetic mutant in four X-Men movies and 2013’s The Wolverine.

Donatella Versace has spread some much-needed joy by sharing a star-studded throwback photo on social media.
Earlier this week, the chief creative officer of Versace posted a black-and-white snap of herself sat alongside music icons Mariah Carey and Beyonce at a party 16 years ago.
“October 4th 2003: I wanted to share this photo with you all next because I see it reposted over and over again on Instagram. Also because I remember having so much fun,” the 64-year-old captioned the picture. “So, this was in Milan and it was the party after my fashion show. We are in the apartment that was my brother Gianni’s and I’m sat with these two amazing Divas. Mariah Carey on one side and Beyonce on the other – Can you imagine?”
In the picture, Mariah is wearing an embellished low-cut dress with her curly hair draped around her shoulders, while Beyonce can be seen wearing a white gown and looking at her Blackberry phone on a table filled with wine glasses and orchids.
Donatella revealed that after the photo was taken, the trio partied all night, and also joked that the Blackberry phone gives away just how old the image is.
“We basically gossiped and laughed for hours and hours and then we danced all night. I remember this like it was yesterday… but looking at my phone, I realise it’s not… @mariahcarey @beyonce,” the designer quipped.
Donatella is currently in self-isolation at her home in Milan, Italy due to the coronavirus outbreak sweeping the nation.

Mariah Carey wishes she had chosen a different hairstyle for her first Christmas concert.
The superstar released her debut holiday album Merry Christmas in October 1994, with the record featuring versions of festive classics as well as her hit original track, All I Want for Christmas Is You. To promote the album, Mariah held a show at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, but while the gig remains a favourite among fans, she has now shared that she wishes she had selected a different hairstyle for the night.
“Somebody tweeted (my performance of Joy to the World) the other day (and wrote), ‘Love this. Bet she hates the hair, though,'” she said in an interview with Billboard.
Accordingly, Mariah noted that the Twitter fan was correct, as she wasn’t particularly sure why she chose to have tightly curled ringlets, a high ponytail, and dramatic bangs.
“Even then it wasn’t good,” the star laughed. “It should’ve just been regular curls without the ponytail and the blown-out bangs. But we all go through these things, and I digress.”
Elsewhere in the chat, Mariah opened up about the success of All I Want for Christmas Is You, which hit the top of the U.S. singles chart 25 years after its release earlier this week. The record-breaking track had previously reached a chart high in December 2017, when it rose to number three.
To celebrate, she released a new music video for the song featuring unreleased footage.
But in spite of her status as a Christmas fanatic, Mariah is adamant she never tires of hearing carols and holiday tunes.
“(I like) at least a week of Christmas music and Christmas movies and activities only. When we’re relaxing, no one’s allowed to listen to anything but Christmas music until 1 January,” she insisted.

Mariah Carey is convinced she’s left it too late to get her lips augmented.
The We Belong Together hitmaker can usually be found rocking a glossy pink or peachy pout when making public appearances, and during a cover interview with Cosmopolitan magazine, Mariah revealed she opts for a more subtle colour because red doesn’t work for her lips, which she has considered enhancing with cosmetic surgery.
“I look horrible with a red lip. I probably should have gotten my lips done, but it’s too late,” the pop diva candidly revealed.
In the wide-ranging interview, Mariah proudly showed off the fact that she didn’t need to wear Spanx shapewear by telling the journalist, “There’s nothing here but this knit dress,” as she ran her hands down her torso, and lamented on modern style, by quipping, “A lot of girls are just nude in front of everybody. No offense to them.”
Mariah also took a quiz, during which she was asked to pick out about her favourite outfit ever, and she pointed to the voluminous Vera Wang gown she wore when she got married to music manager Tommy Mottola in 1993 and the dress she wore when she tied the knot with TV personality Nick Cannon, the father of her twins Monroe and Moroccan, in 2008.
The singer then gave her top tips for taking a good selfie and advised her fans to stop pouting in their photos.
“Let someone else take the picture – unpurse your lips!!! Ugh,” she recommended.
In the cover image for the magazine, Mariah wears a white T-shirt bearing a picture of herself, and Cosmopolitan editors added in the caption, “Yes, that is her own face on her shirt.”

Mariah Carey prefers to take the stage wearing custom designs tailored to her shape.
The singer, who is currently gearing up to revive her Las Vegas residency show, works closely with stylist Nicolas Bru to create the perfect looks for her concerts and Bru, who has also worked with singers Fergie and Sofia Carson, knows better to present his most famous client with racks of designer clothing.
“She doesn’t like to try on a hundred things,” he tells People magazine. “I usually try to get clothing made for her because she likes custom dresses, especially for her concerts and music videos. She’s been doing this for a pretty long time so she’s very aware of her body and what looks good on her.”
The style guru adds that while the Emotions hitmaker is particular about her personal style, she is open to new ideas.
“She usually has a pretty good hunch as to what’s going to work,” Bru adds. “She’s also pretty eccentric – if I feel like she should try something, she’ll try it on and give it a chance. She’ll tell me, ‘I’m not sure it’s going to work but I’ll give it a try’. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t.
Carey’s willingness to try out new ideas often leads to memorable looks: “We did a custom Julien Macdonald fringe dress for the opening of her Vegas residency this summer and it was hand-embroidered with a deep V-neckline and then it had long, metal chains that were sewn on the side,” he recalls.
“It was extremely heavy to hold because it was all metal but it moved really nicely. She had to be on stage and walk down stairs, so she really wasn’t sure if it would work. But when she put it on she loved it. We customised it for the stage and she ended up wearing it for every show.”
