Charlize Theron was overcome with emotion when she watched a video of Megyn Kelly reacting to her portrayal of the news anchor in Bombshell.

The Monster actress played the American journalist in the biographical movie, which she also co-produced, about the sexual harassment scandal surrounding former Fox News CEO Roger Ailes.

Megyn informed investigators she had been one of the victims of late chairman’s inappropriate behaviour before he was fired from his role in 2016, and she recently revealed that watching her real-life story come alive onscreen in Bombshell made her tear up.

“I do wish I had done more, even though I was powerless… what if I had thrown myself on the fire back then?” the former Fox News reporter reflected in a tearful Instagram video last week.

And after watching Megyn’s video confession, Charlize admitted she was “incredibly emotional”.

“I felt that that was an incredibly sincere moment from Megyn,” the 44-year-old told Deadline. “It hit me really deep. I felt something really real in her saying that.”

The Oscar-winning actress explained she was very moved that Megyn acknowledged she may have been able to do more to help fellow victims.

“We (as women) shouldn’t even be in that situation in the first place,” the leading lady declared. “We want more than that. We want a world where that’s not even asked. Where we are not even in that situation where we have to choose what we’re going to do in the first place. And I just don’t think that is too much to ask. I think that is a human right that we should all have.”

Bombshell received three nominations for the upcoming Oscars on Monday, with Charlize earning a Best Actress nod for her role as Megyn and co-star Margot Robbie being recognised in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Charlize Theron needed medical treatment after lowering her voice to play Megyn Kelly in Bombshell proved to be “very stressful” on her vocal cords.

The critically-acclaimed drama chronicles the real-life female Fox News employees who exposed the sexual harassment of CEO Roger Ailes back in 2016, and stars Charlize as the former Fox News reporter.

However, the 44-year-old was so determined to nail her portrayal of Megyn, she was willing to risk her health to get the sound just right.

“It was very stressful on my vocal cords to do Megyn Kelly’s voice in Bombshell,” the Oscar-winning actress told W Magazine for their Best Performances 2020 issue.

“Megyn has a very deep register, and I started having a really hard time. I ended up having to go see a specialist. Poor me,” Charlize quipped.

She also explained that she was more than happy to wear unfashionable nude-coloured tights to play the controversial Fox News reporter, after being told to do so by a fellow Oscar winner.

“Colleen Atwood, our costume designer, has won four Academy Awards, so when she tells me to put the nude hose on, I put the nude hose on,” she laughed.

The South Africa-born star’s dedication to the role has paid off, and her performance earned her nominations for the Golden Globes and the BAFTA Awards.

Charlize, who also produced the movie, is tipped to score her third Oscar nod when the contenders are announced next week.

Bombshell, which also stars Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman, is now showing in U.S. cinemas.

Charlize Theron found it hard to empathise with Megyn Kelly while preparing to play the journalist in Bombshell.

The Oscar-winning actress portrays the former Fox News reporter in the upcoming movie, and she revealed in an interview with Adam Driver for Variety’s Actors on Actors series that she had to work hard to understand Megyn.

When he told Charlize that one of his favourite things about being an actor was because it forces him to “exercise that muscle” of empathy, the 44-year-old agreed, and confessed she struggled to make the journalist likeable.

“This was definitely a reminder for me, at this part of my career, of just going like, ‘That muscle needs to be worked a little harder.’ Megyn Kelly made it really challenging for me,” Charlize explained. “For me, it’s a very personal connection that I have to find with the person that I’m playing, that has to make sense. I have to get to a place where I can actually say to myself, ‘This makes sense to me. I relate. I understand.'”

She went on to add that she understood why many people disliked the Fox News anchor, who has in the past made controversial comments about children wearing blackface, body-shaming, and race relations in the U.S.

“Megyn Kelly can be incredibly polarising. There are things about her that live in the extreme. People either love her or they hate her. And she makes no excuses for that,” Charlize shared. “There’s a part of her that is so amplified – she comes across really abrasive sometimes, and somewhat aggressive and cold. All of these things that are not necessarily qualities that make you want to hug a person.”

Charlize Theron amazed Nicole Kidman with Bombshell transformation

Nicole Kidman initially didn’t recognise Charlize Theron following her physical transformation into U.S. newswoman Megyn Kelly on the set of Bombshell.

The film revolves around the real-life female Fox News employees who exposed CEO Roger Ailes’ sexual harassment, and features Theron as Kelly and Kidman as TV journalist Gretchen Carlson.

The Monster star, who also serves as a producer, has heaped praise on the film’s hair and make-up experts for making her look so much like the real deal that her co-star Kidman was left confused.

“It was chaotic, the way we shot it,” Theron recalled on breakfast show Good Morning America. “Jay Roach, the film’s director, wanted to shoot 360 (degrees) at all times, so it felt like a real newsroom, and so we were always scattered (around the set)…, and so I think for a second she (Kidman) just couldn’t put it together that it could be me, and it was from afar.

“But the prosthetic work, the make-up and hair in this film is really top notch. We got to work with incredible people.”

Kelly was not directly involved in the movie, but she appeared to give her approval to Bombshell in an Instagram post after recently viewing the film for the first time.

After insisting she would have made a number of edits if given the opportunity, Kelly admitted reliving the trauma of her past – which she detailed in her 2016 memoir Settle for More – was an “incredibly emotional experience”.

Theron admitted she hasn’t been personally contacted by Kelly, but she is grateful to have had the opportunity to tell part of her story onscreen.

“Of course it must be incredibly emotional to go on this journey again and to rewatch it, so I’m just grateful to all of these women that we have this story,” the Oscar winner shared. “I wish it never happened to them, but I think this story is and will be part of a historical moment that really changes things for women.”

Megyn Kelly: ‘I would have made some edits to Bombshell’

Former news anchor Megyn Kelly has hinted she’s not completely satisfied with her portrayal in new movie Bombshell.

Charlize Theron portrays Kelly during her time as a Fox News correspondent in the film, which focuses on the female employees of the TV news company and the sexual misconduct allegations they made against its chairman and chief executive Roger Ailes in 2016.

In an Instagram post over the weekend, Kelly distanced herself from the film, making it clear to her followers that she had no involvement with the movie and would have made changes if she could have.

“While the movie Bombshell is loosely based on my experience during the sexual harassment scandal at Fox News, I have nothing to do with this film,” she wrote. “I did not sell the rights to my story or book and only got my first look at the film once it was past the point of any possible edits, though there are certainly some I would have made.”

Megyn then hinted that she would share her grievances about the film in the near future, adding, “As for my thoughts about the film, I’ll have more soon.”

However, she hoped that those who have experienced sexual misconduct might find comfort in the events portrayed in the film.

“Watching this picture was an incredibly emotional experience for me, and for those with whom I saw it. Sexual harassment is pervasive in this country; it can leave scars that do not heal,” the 49-year-old continued. “My heart goes out to those who’ve gone through it, who I hope might find some comfort in this story.”

To accompany her post, Megyn, who worked with Fox News from 2004 until 2017, shared a picture of her son Thatcher looking at the movie poster for Bombshell in the foyer of a cinema and revealed it confused him because “it appears to show a picture of me”.

Bombshell, which also stars Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie, opens in the U.S. on 20 December.

Charlize Theron wanted to do the victims of Roger Ailes justice with her new movie, Bombshell.

The Oscar-winning actress plays former Fox News correspondent Megyn Kelly in the upcoming film, which focuses on the sexual harassment scandal that brought down the late media mogul in 2016.

Charlize admitted she was originally “s**t scared” to take on the role of journalist Megyn – who claimed her former boss grabbed her and tried to bribe her with sexual favours – and was eventually convinced to sign up by director Jay Roach.

“I was looking for a filmmaker to push me to that last part, and he did it so eloquently that I asked him to join us in making this,” the 44-year-old told The Hollywood Reporter, referencing her co-stars Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman, who plays one of Ailes’ victims, Gretchen Carlson.

And the Monster star’s top priority was to ensure that the victims were happy with the final cut of the film, and copies were made available to the women who shared their stories, including Gretchen and Megyn.

“I have complete empathy that this must be a hard process for all of them, but maybe more so for Gretchen and for Megyn because they’re kind of at the centre of it. But I feel that we never went into this to do anything other than do them justice,” Charlize explained.

The actress also shared her belief that Bombshell tackles the subject of workplace sexism head on, and for the first time in her 25-year career she is positive about the future of equality in Hollywood.

“Every year of those 25 years I was always asked about the casting couch, and everybody wants to hear about the salacious stories, but nobody ever really cared about what we do about that,” Charlize stated. “I feel like something is happening that’s going to actually change things.”

Charlize Theron was ‘scared’ about playing Megyn Kelly in Bombshell

Charlize Theron found it “harder” playing journalist Megyn Kelly in Bombshell than portraying serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster.

The 44-year-old made the confession following a screening of the highly-anticipated upcoming movie Bombshell, in which she plays the former Fox News correspondent.

Charlize revealed that preparing for the role proved to be the biggest challenge of her career, rivalling the dark places she had to go to for the 2003 drama, for which she won the Best Actress Oscar.

“This was harder,” she told People. “I was s**t-scared. She’s conflicting. She’s incredibly well known; I’ve never played anybody on that level. I’ve played real people that nobody knows about, so there was less pressure when I did those.”

Charlize, who also serves as the film’s producer, admitted she was hesitant to take on the role.

“(I thought), ‘Maybe there’s somebody out there who can do this better than you can’,” she added. “But I was just really scared too. I honestly knew her so superficially.”

Bombshell centres on the true story of Kelly and her Fox News colleagues, including Gretchen Carlson, who is played by Nicole Kidman in the film, who came forward with allegations of sexual harassment against the network’s former CEO Roger Ailes, who died in 2017 at the age of 77.

Kelly later detailed her claims against Ailes in her 2016 memoir, Settle for More.

Bombshell, which also stars Margot Robbie and John Lithgow, hits theatres on 20 December.

Nicole Kidman had no idea who Charlize Theron was after she underwent a transformation for her role in Bombshell.

In the flick, Charlize plays Fox News host Megyn Kelly – and it turns out the make-up and costuming was so good, it also fooled one of her co-stars.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the Elle Women In Hollywood Awards on Monday, the Long Shot star explained how her pal was taken aback by her unrecognisable transformation.

“She walked by me at one point and I thought she was mad at me,” Charlize recalled. “I thought, ‘Oh god! What did I do? Did I mess something up in her trailer? Did I not say hi nicely?’

“She just came up to me and she was like ‘Charlize?’ and then I said, ‘Yes are you mad at me?’ She said, ‘No I just didn’t know that was you!”

Nicole plays journalist Gretchen Carlson in the movie – a biographical drama surrounding the women at Fox News who stood up to former network chairman and CEO Roger Ailes and exposed a culture of toxic behaviour and sexism.

During the chat, the Oscar winner highlighted the importance of women in the workplace supporting one another, and insisted The Hours actress had always been there for her.

“She has never done anything but support and show up for me,” the star continued. “We’ve been trying to make a movie for so long. I’m just happy to finally be in a film with her.”

Bombshell, which also stars Margot Robbie, John Lithgow and Kate McKinnon, debuts in cinemas on 20 December.

Charlize Theron has won praise from newswoman Megyn Kelly, who she portrays in new movie drama Bombshell.

The former Fox News anchor recently heaped praise on the Atomic Blonde star, revealing that although she has no desire to see the project, she thinks the Oscar winner was the right choice for the role.

“She seems smart, seems like a good mom, so I could do worse,” Kelly said. And when her comments were relayed to Theron at the premiere of The Addams Family, the actress was clearly happy.

“That’s incredibly kind,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “We try to, as actors and creative storytellers, we try to do all of this with integrity, so that was always where it came from. So for her to feel good about that, I’m sure it can’t be easy for her, so I’m incredibly understanding.”

Bombshell, which chronicles Kelly and her fellow Fox News regulars’ bid to bring down misogynistic network boss Roger Ailes, will hit movie theatres in December. It also stars Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie.

The blonde beauty also discussed voicing the character of Morticia Addams in her new film, and how she relates to the mother figure.

“Morticia is a real mother hen and she rules her house, and I definitely relate to that,” Theron said. “I just don’t look as good in the mornings when I do it, that’s all. I’m like the sweat pants version of Morticia.”

Fans have praised Charlize Theron’s remarkable transformation in the new trailer for Bombshell.

The Academy Award-winning actress stars as former Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly in the upcoming movie directed by Jay Roach, which follows the late Roger Ailes’ fall from grace in 2016.

In the trailer released on Wednesday, Theron made her debut as Kelly, alongside Nicole Kidman as Gretchen Carlson, who successfully sued Ailes in 2016 for sexual harassment.

Margot Robbie also appears in the tense clip as fictional news producer Kayla Pospisil, which shows the three women getting into an elevator to the second floor of the Fox News headquarters.

And Twitter users could not believe just how believable Theron looked in character as Kelly.

“Looks good but no way that’s Charlize Theron,” one wrote, while another posted: “Damn. That’s the most unrecognisable Charlize Theron’s looked since (2003 film) Monster.”

Back in 2016, Carlson sued Ailes for sexual harassment – which he denied – and prompted many more women to come forward with allegations against the former chairman and CEO of Fox News and Fox Television Stations.

He was forced to resign, and Carlson settled with the firm for a reported $20 million (£17 million).

Kelly came under fire for failing to come forward with allegations against Ailes, and instead chronicled her experience in her 2016 memoir, Settle for More.

According to the journalist, Ailes promised to advance her career in exchange for sexual favours and made physical advances toward her on several occasions, which she refused.

Bombshell, which also stars Connie Britton, Mark Duplass, Alice Eve, Allison Janney and Kate McKinnon, is set to be released in December.
