Mel B refused to straighten her hair for the Spice Girls’ debut music video Wannabe.

Mel, along with her bandmates Emma Bunton, Mel C, Victoria Beckham, and Geri Horner, shot to fame in 1996 with the success of their debut single Wannabe, which was accompanied by a video in which they can be seen creating mischief at an eccentric bohemian party.

But in a new interview with Daily Star Online, the 45-year-old revealed she was told to straighten her natural hair for the shoot, but she pushed back against the suggestion.

“I remember when we first did the video for Wannabe we had a big styling team and one of the first things they said to me was: ‘OK, so we need to straighten your hair,'” she recalled. “I refused point-blank because my hair was my identity and yes it was different to all the other girls but that was what the Spice Girls were about – celebrating our differences.”

After the video was released, Mel received letters from mums and their daughters praising her for embracing her natural hair and she was thrilled by the feedback.

“I’d get really emotional letters from girls, and their mums, saying how incredible it was that they had someone to ‘be’ when they did dances in the playground at school and they were actually daring to wear their hair out and proud rather than scraped back or straightened… That was a big deal to me,” the mother-of-three added.

The former America’s Got Talent judge gave the interview to discuss her experiences with racism to support the Black Lives Matter movement and stand in solidarity with unarmed African-American man George Floyd, who died at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota on 25 May.

Mel C is learning how to do her own make-up after years of relying on professionals.

The former Spice Girl experimented with plenty of bold hair and beauty looks during her days with the ’90s girl group.

But in an interview with The Strategist U.K., Mel admitted that she is only now getting to grips with cosmetics.

“I consider myself very lucky, because I’ve been getting my make-up done professionally since the age of 21,” she told the publication. “But it meant that suddenly being at home, and still having interviews to do, brought its own challenges. I was on Canadian TV the other day, and I’m doing Skype interviews with people all over the world. So, I’m having to learn to do my own make-up.”

Mel went on to name Sisley’s Instant Eclat Glow Primer as one of her go-to products, as it really helps to even out her skin tone before she applies concealer or foundation.

Yet, the singer does have at least one beauty expert in her house who she can call on for tips and tricks.

“My daughter, who is 11 years old, she’s obsessed with James Charles and Jeffree Star, she knows all about contouring. I feel like I missed out – I was a little raver in the early ’90s. We didn’t really do our hair and make-up. We were just sweaty,” the 46-year-old laughed.

Elsewhere in the chat, Mel shared that she took a lot of ice baths in the lead-up to the Spice Girls’ reunion shows last year, but has since switched to soaks in the tub with a sprinkling of Westlab Epsom Salts.

“They’re full of magnesium, which is really good for your muscles. Your body takes it in, and it can really help with a good night’s sleep,” she added.

The Spice Girls are making sure they shine on their trek around the U.K. and Ireland with one million Swarovski crystals sewn onto their costumes.

The girl power originators, now a foursome after Victoria Beckham declined to join them for the reunion shows, are currently on their Spice World 2019 Tour, kicked things off in Dublin last week.

As well as delighting fans with their catchy pop tracks, the singers – Geri Horner, Emma Bunton, Mel C and Mel B – have also made sure their costumes bring the wow factor.

In a statement regarding their outfits, costume designer Gabriella Slade gushed: “It’s an absolute dream job to design for a tour like this, and to be working with such brilliant women as the Spice Girls. The use of Swarovski crystals is really important and integral in designing for a pop show – it really elevates the costumes. You can always tell it’s a Swarovski crystal costume, even from the back of the stadium!”

The Wannabe hitmakers are taking their show all over the U.K. before finishing in London for three nights at the city’s famous Wembley Stadium.

Among the 100 costumes worn by the singers and their dancers is a new take on Geri’s famous Union Jack dress, the animal prints that Mel B became famous for and glitzy sportswear for Mel C, aka Sporty Spice.

And Swarovski executive board member Nadja Swarovski jumped at the chance to work with Gabriella and the British stars.

“(We wanted to) celebrate the amazing, empowering and iconic spirit of Girl Power for the Spice World tour,” Nadja said. “We are thrilled to help magnify the magic and dazzle of this stellar show.”

Victoria Beckham has showed off her fun side – as well as her ballet moves – by slipping into her old pointe shoes for her youngest son Cruz.

Cruz, Victoria and David Beckham’s third child, recently uploaded a video of his mum demonstrating her dance skills on his Instagram page. The clip showed the fashion designer rising to her toes in a garden as Amy Winehouse’s Tears Dry On Their Own plays in the background.

A voice can be heard saying, “I’m very impressed. Look how good mummy is”, before Victoria, dressed in black leather trousers with a red waistband and a white T-shirt, loses her balance and cracks into a smile.

The 45-year-old previously revealed that she dreamed of a career in dance when she was a child.

“I was never going to be a model. I studied dance until I was qualified to be a dance teacher. My mum said I had to have something to fall back on if it all went wrong. So if it does go wrong, I can always be a tap-dancing teacher,” she said during a 2015 Q&A in New York.

The video comes as Victoria’s former Spice Girls bandmates Emma Bunton, Mel B, Geri Horner and Mel C finally reunited to begin their joint rehearsals for their upcoming U.K. tour.

Emma, Geri and Mel C had been practising their moves and songs without Los Angeles-based Mel B, who recently caused a media storm by claiming she’d had a lesbian encounter with Geri when the Spice Girls first started out, but Scary Spice touched down in London earlier this week and headed straight to the rehearsal room.

The Spice World 2019 Tour kicks off in Dublin on 24 May (19), and finishes with three nights at London’s iconic Wembley Stadium in June.

Victoria has chosen not to join the Wannabe hitmakers.

Victoria Beckham has described her iconic Spice Girls fashion choices as being part of her personal style journey.

The singer-turned-designer’s style has evolved significantly since her time in the ‘90s girl group, where she performed alongside bandmates Mel B, Geri Horner, Emma Bunton and Mel C.

During her time as Posh Spice, the star wore outfits that spanned LBDs to miniskirts worn with bikini tops.

Victoria took a retrospective look at some of her “bold” choices during a new interview for Grazia magazine, and admitted that she only has fond memories of her most eccentric looks.

“Have you seen some of the Spice Girls outfits? Some looks have been quite bold,” she laughed. “But they’re part of my journey and what’s made me who I am today, so I don’t regret them. Life’s too short to regret outfit choices!”

While the star is perhaps best known for her love of heels and high fashion, she recently collaborated with sportswear brand Reebok, creating a unisex line boasting hoodies, sweatpants, crop tops, leggings, socks, sneakers, and more.

Joking that the line has turned her into Mel C’s alter ego Sporty Spice, Victoria says that, as her style has evolved, she’s developed a penchant for more practical pieces.

“Now I choose pieces that make my life simpler, things that are easy to wear and practical,” the 44-year-old admitted. “If you look good, you feel good.”

While she won’t be joining her former bandmates on their Spice World – 2019 Tour, she suggested that she now aims to channel the five-piece’s “girl power” mantra through her fashion business.

“I want women who wear my pieces to feel like the best version of themselves,” she said.

Victoria Beckham would never wear sporty clothes with a high heel.

The designer recently created a new ’90s inspired Reebok collection in collaboration with basketball icon Shaquille O’Neal, and debuted her latest line at an event in Los Angeles last Thursday (12Apr18). Though the former Spice Girl has become famous for her glamorous dresses and towering high heels, she believes pairing a stiletto with casual sportswear is a major fashion sin.

“That is one way that I don’t love sportswear, actually,” she explained in an interview with The Guardian. “I don’t love sportswear with a heel because it doesn’t look effortless and I think the whole point of bringing sportswear into the wardrobe is that it should look easy.”

Victoria’s new outlook marks a shift from her mindset back in 2007, where she donned a pair of white, wedge trainers when she was invited to throw the first pitch at a Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game. However, the British fashion mogul is one of many designers to welcome the blending of sportswear and high fashion in recent years, and feels that this unfussy vibe is particularly appealing to modern buyers.

“I think people want to be comfortable,” the 44-year-old considered, adding that she likes to see her customers mix sporty pieces with classic tailoring where “it looks effortless as opposed to too contrived.”

Victoria also shared that her own love of exercise means she’s “wanted to create workout clothes for a long, long time.” And though she was the Posh Spice to Mel C’s Sporty in her girl band days, she insists she’d have liked to have been more active during the ’90s.

“I didn’t exercise as much as I do now when I was in the Spice Girls because there wasn’t the time to do it,” she said.
