Ocean’s 8 has stolen the top spot on the North American box office in its opening weekend (08-10Jun18).

The female-centred Ocean’s trilogy spinoff starring Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, and Cate Blanchett has earned $41.5 million (£30.9 million) to take the number one spot. The film’s debut is the best in the franchise when not adjusting for inflation, according to The Wrap.com.

Before the movie premiered, the stars spoke about being determined to prove to Hollywood executives that women can turn blockbuster titles into global box office hits without the support of leading men.

“(The notion that) ensembles of women just ‘don’t sell’ – it’s just lazy thinking,” Cate said earlier this month, claiming only “lazy, stupid people” still think that way.

Meanwhile, Solo: A Star Wars Story comes in second place with $15.2 million (£11.3 million), bringing its domestic total to $176.4 million (£131.6 million) and global tally to $312.2 million (£232.9 million). Deadpool 2 takes the third spot with $13.8 million (£10.3 million).

Hereditary and Avengers: Infinity War round out the top five with $13 million (£9.7 million) and $6.9 million (£5.1 million), respectively.

Overseas, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has taken the number one spot with $151.1 million (£112.7 million). The fifth film in the franchise had a record-breaking opening in South Korea after earning $27.2 million (£20.3 million), which was an opening day and studio opening weekend high.

The film opens in North America on 22 June (18).

“Jurassic World is a genre of one, and each film within this franchise is engineered as a global event,” Duncan Clark, Universal’s President of International Distribution, says. “Audiences gravitate to the nostalgia, storytelling and spectacle, and from this outstanding foundation we are set for a lengthy international playout, with major markets – including China, Australia, Latin America and North America-yet to open.”

Childless Sarah Paulson thrilled to play a mum in Ocean’s 8

Actress Sarah Paulson had to dig deep for her role in Sandra Bullock’s new heist movie Ocean’s 8 because the childless star plays a mum in the film.

While castmates Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Anne Hathaway, and Helena Bonham Carter all have kids, Sarah has never been interested in starting a family.

And that fact made her new character quite interesting.

The 43-year-old tells S Magazine, “They (writers) did a really wonderful job of giving every character not only a specific skill set that makes them an asset to Debbie Ocean’s team to pull off this heist, but they all have very distinct personalities.

“The thing that separates me from the other women is that I’m the only one in the movie who’s a mother. I have a few small children, and so pulling this job takes me away from them. We don’t really learn about what their (the other characters) responsibilities are outside of the job they’re doing as directly as we do with (my character) Tammy, so that was an extra thing from my story line that was really fun to play.”

Earlier this year (18), Sarah opened up about not having children, insisting she wants to be able to be “selfish.”

“I don’t want to be torn,” she told Town & Country. “I don’t want to look at my child and say, ‘You’re the most extraordinary thing that ever happened to me, but also the death knell’.”

“It was hard for my mother to be everywhere, to come to the school play and make a living, I’ve always known what I wanted out of professional life, and I didn’t want to turn around and go, ‘If I had only made the choice to just dedicate this time in my life to me’,” she added. “It’s selfish, but I think the word selfish gets a bad rap.”

Anne Hathaway was showered with compliments on the set of Ocean’s 8 not long after she gave birth to her son.

The actress and her husband Adam Shulman welcomed their tot Jonathan in March 2016, and later that year she began filming the all-female instalment of the heist film series.

While she was conscious of still carrying some baby weight, her co-stars made her feel fantastic when the shoot began.

“It was really significant to me because it was my first movie after having my son,” she told Ellen DeGeneres during an appearance on her show.

“I walked on the set and my weight’s a little up and I’m just aware of it. And I walk onto set, and I’m in my jeans and I’ve done my best and I’m going to love myself no matter what and Sandy Bullock just looks up and goes, ‘Looking good mama.’ And I was like, ‘Oof that made me feel amazing.’ And then Cate Blanchett’s like, ‘Nice jeans Hathaway.’ This is so great! And then Rihanna looks up and goes, ‘Damn girl, you got an a*s.’ And I of course was freaked out and loved it so much and go, ‘Really?’ And she goes, ‘You got an a*s like me.’ And I can honestly say I’ve never had that experience on a film set before.”

The 35-year-old went on to reveal the shoot was a “real love fest”. And it wasn’t just the A-list cast that made Anne feel at ease, but director and writer Gary Ross too.

“One of the lucky things about being in this business for so long is that I’ve really come to terms with the pressure that you get to look a certain way as an actress, and I don’t beat myself up about that stuff anymore,” Anne confessed. “But after I had my son the weight was really slow to come off, so I was a different size to what I normally am and the director told me, ‘That’s great, we have eight women in this movie, we need to have as many body types up there as we can.’ Which I was really relieved to hear.”

Ocean’s 8, which also stars Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter and Awkwafina, hits cinemas from Thursday (07Jun18).

Rihanna treated Ocean’s 8 co-stars to stylish Puma gifts

Going to work on the set of Ocean’s 8 was “like Christmas” for the all-female ensemble thanks to surprise gifts from generous castmate Rihanna.

Actress Mindy Kaling reveals the Work hitmaker would frequently have shoes and apparel from her bestselling Fenty x Puma collection handed out to her fellow leading ladies, and it was always exciting to see what they’d be treated to next.

“She’s just shy and incredibly stylish and sweet,” Mindy gushed about the pop superstar, who portrays a master hacker in the new heist movie. “Like, I’d go to my trailer and you remember the sneakers, the creepers that she made for Puma, that completely sold out? You’d go to your trailer and they’d be another gift from Rihanna’s line; it was like Christmas every morning!”

However, Mindy jokes that she wasn’t allowed to get too close to the singer-turned-actress, real name Robyn Rihanna Fenty, when the cameras weren’t rolling.

She told breakfast show Today: “You’d go to thank her and she’s so shy and sweet and you want to throw your arms around her, and she’d have her security guards who’d say, ‘Please don’t touch Miss Fenty!'”

Sharing her personal style picks with Kaling and their co-stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, and Awkwafina wasn’t the only way Rihanna was able to bond with the group – she also helped to give new mum Hathaway a big confidence boost by complimenting her figure.

The Les Miserables actress began filming Ocean’s 8 just months after welcoming her first child with husband Adam Shulman, but any concerns she had about her extra baby weight quickly disappeared on set.

During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which aired on Thursday (07Jun18), Anne revealed she was overjoyed to hear Bullock and Blanchett say she was “looking good” as she strutted onset in a pair of jeans, but it was a remark from Rihanna which really got her excited.

“Rihanna looks up and goes, ‘Damn girl, you got an a**!’,” Anne recalled. “And I, of course ,was freaked out and loved it so much and go, ‘Really?’ And she goes, ‘You got an a** like me.’ And I can honestly say I’ve never had that experience on a film set before.”

Sandra Bullock thankful for George Clooney’s Ocean’s 8 support

Sandra Bullock was touched to have the blessing of her Gravity co-star George Clooney for her new all-female Ocean’s Eleven spin-off.

Clooney led the star-studded cast of the 2001 crime thriller and its two sequels as smooth conman Danny Ocean, and in Ocean’s 8, Bullock portrays his onscreen sister, who puts together her own team of criminals to pull off a big jewellery heist.

The Oscar winner reached out to her old pal as the franchise spin-off was being developed to secure George’s approval.

Joking about their conversation, Sandra told breakfast show Today, “He said, ‘Don’t take my franchise!’ I said, ‘I’m taking it, and I’m running it!'”

Getting serious, she explained Clooney couldn’t have been more supportive of the project, because he knew how much fun he had had working on the Ocean’s trilogy with the likes of Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Andy Garcia, and Julia Roberts, who played his ex-wife.

“The nice thing about George is that he’s just happy when anything works,” Sandra shared. “He wanted the same connections, the same memories that were made for them for us as well, I think.”

Bullock features in Ocean’s 8 alongside Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, and Awkwafina, and she is hoping critics will be kinder to the new release than they were to the last big all-female blockbuster – 2016’s Ghostbusters revamp, starring Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and her The Heat co-star Melissa McCarthy.

“That was unfair on a level that I can’t even not be mad about talking about,” Bullock told Variety at the Ocean’s 8 New York City premiere earlier this week. “They literally walked into a firing squad…”

“Let’s back off the meanness,” she continued. “Let’s have a year of kindness. The women are here – we’re not going anywhere.”

Actress Mindy Kaling had to be sewn into her Ocean’s 8 premiere gown on Tuesday (05Jun18) to avoid a red carpet wardrobe malfunction.

The A Wrinkle in Time star documented her preparations for the New York City launch of her new heist movie on Instagram, and even shared a little behind-the-scenes secret as she encountered a last-minute problem with the sparkly black halterneck gown she had chosen by designer Prabal Gurung.

“Post-panic. Mid-sew in. Pre-#Oceans8 Premiere,” she captioned an image of herself surrounded by assistants as they pulled the back of her dress together. “Is it really a red carpet without a wardrobe malfunction?”

Mindy didn’t reveal exactly what had gone wrong, but she heaped praise on her team, particularly hairstylist Marc Mena, for helping to resolve the unexpected fashion issue.

“My glam squad pulled through,” she shared on her Instagram Story timeline. “@marcmena to the rescue!”

She also posted video clips from her night out, which included an afterparty at the Big Apple’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, which serves as the scene of the crime in the film.

However, when the new mum returned to her New York hotel suite, she had to recruit a friend to carefully free her from the outfit.

“It was such a glamorous night, except now Akshara has to cut me out of my dress, so this should only take like, 20 to 30 minutes, I think!,” she giggled in the video.

Mindy stars in Ocean’s 8 alongside Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Sarah Paulson, Anne Hathaway, and Rihanna, among others. The film, an all-female spin-off from the George Clooney ensemble franchise, was directed by Gary Ross and opens in theatres this week (ends08Jun18).

Rihanna insisted her character sport dreadlocks in upcoming film Ocean’s 8.

The Barbadian superstar portrays technical genius Nine Ball in the heist flick directed by Gary Ross, which follows a group of women who plan on robbing the Met Gala in New York City.

Rihanna was seen wearing dreadlocks during the shoot in late 2016, with her hairstylist Yusef Williams now explaining that the look was created specifically to tie in with her Caribbean roots.

“We thought it would be strong,” he told Refinery29. “Her locs would maintain that tie to Africa. She’d keep her accent. She wasn’t just going to be some American girl in this movie. Nine Ball is still a Caribbean girl that just happens to be in America.”

Yusef went on to share that Rihanna spent time discussing every detail of her character’s appearance with filmmaker Gary, with the pair granted a lot of freedom. They wanted to convey a “chill and minimal” aesthetic, with Rihanna’s hair acting as a starting point for all costume decisions.

“She would wear the same things over and over again,” the hair expert explained. “But I think the one thing she probably cared about the most was her hair. When people have locs, it’s kind of like their crown. It’s their pride and joy. It’s like a flower… you gotta nourish it and watch it grow. Hair played a really big part in who Nine Ball came to be.”

It took Yusuf and four assistants three hours to transform Rihanna’s hair prior to shooting. They opted to use “kinkier, looser textured” hair to create a “reggae feel” and chose not to give the 30-year-old a parting.

“We used tonnes of shea butter and black seed oil to keep her hair strong,” added Yusuf of keeping Rihanna’s tresses in top condition. “For her edges, I used a lot of black seed oil. I’ll mix that with a little bit of gel or pomade and then smooth them up… also letting them kind of curl up when they wanted to, just to create that realness.”

Anne Hathaway has dismissed reports of catfights on the set of her new film Ocean’s 8, insisting she became good friends with all of her castmates.

The Les Miserables actress, who stars alongside Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, and Helena Bonham Carter in the Ocean’s franchise spin-off, was caught up in feud reports with Blanchett in 2016, and denied the reports at the time, and now she’s insisting the women had nothing but a good time on set.

“It’s been really amazing to watch the way certain members of the media have wanted us to fight each other and the way they wanted there to be competition and catfights, but we were all collaborating – all the time,” she told U.S. breakfast show Today on Thursday (31May18). “Now, we’re friends. We genuinely love each other and we’re so there for each other. It’s a beautiful thing.”

“And I think that’s what female friendship is,” she added. “That’s what it has been in my life, and I don’t know why I thought it couldn’t be that at work; I guess, because I was fed this myth. But we all have had an experience that disproved it.”

Anne is thrilled she got to work alongside so many of her acting heroes and explains she took time to enjoy working with them.

“Oh, man! It was incredible,” she said. “I didn’t want to miss a minute of it. Normally, if I work with people I’ve admired – like these women – in the past, I’ve felt like, ‘Oh, I don’t want to annoy anybody. I don’t want to make too much of a fuss. I don’t want to make the wrong impression’.”

“And this one I was like, ‘I want to look at the view! I want to enjoy it… I don’t want to miss a minute of this one’,” she continued.

New mum Mindy Kaling has discovered wrapping gifts is the key to winding down.

The A Wrinkle in Time actress admits the art of presenting the perfect present is theraputic whenever she needs to de-stress.

“I love wrapping presents,” she told Pop Sugar. “It’s so meditative for me.”

The 38-year-old also finds her devotion to her workout routine soothes her.

“I love exercise, but not for weight-loss reasons,” she shared. “I eat far too much for working out to make a dent in my weight! I do it because I love the endorphins I get once I work out. So I try to get an endorphin rush before something I’m nervous for by going for a run (sic).”

But it’s motherhood the actress and comedienne is getting the most joy from after becoming a first-time mum in December (17).

“Hanging out with my baby is my happy,” she explained.

Meanwhile, asked to offer up her 22-year-old self a little advice, Mindy said, “The body you hate now will be the body you wish you still had in 15 years. Treat it nicely.”

Kaling recently revealed she was exercising right up until the morning she went into labour, adding, “Because I like to eat, and I’m not skinny to start with, I knew that if I gained a lot of weight during my pregnancy, things could just fly off the rails in a really bad way…,” she told Shape magazine, “so I kept my weight gain to about 27 pounds.

“I also worked out whenever I could while I was pregnant. I did a lot of yoga and a lot of walking, and I jogged until I couldn’t jog anymore. I exercised until the morning I gave birth.”
