Ralph Lauren doesn’t like fashion so to speak, but rather personal style.

The 78-year-old designer made the statement in a new interview with The Times, which was conducted just before he presented his recent 50th anniversary show during New York Fashion Week.

To help him celebrate being one of America’s most popular designers for the past five decades, Lauren invited lots of his famous friends and fans, including Kanye West, Steven Spielberg, Robert De Niro, Oprah Winfrey, Anne Hathaway, and Hillary Clinton.

“I don’t like fashion,” he stated to the publication. “It’s very changeable. Not changeable… I don’t know what the word is… it’s about time. I like style. Style is, in a way, about who you are, and using your own sensibilities to present yourself.

“I never went to fashion school, but I do design clothes. I do come up with the dream. l I want it to be good and I want it to be timeless.”

Launching his Polo brand in 1968 after first dipping his toes into the industry with a tie line the previous year, Lauren began selling his clothes in Bloomingdales and soon gained a cult following. And he says his success was all down to him making the clothes he wanted to wear himself.

“I never set out to be a designer. I was always a consumer,” he explained. “I would go to a store and say ‘Why don’t you make that jacket with side vents?’ Simple things like that. Clothes for me were, ‘I want to look cool today. I’m going to create a jacket.’ Most designers don’t think that way. They have dreams of what they’re creating. It wasn’t my dream, it was my own clothes. That’s what I liked, and I still do.”

Kanye West is down for a Ralph Lauren collaboration.

Kanye was one of the A-list guests invited to the all-American designer’s 50th anniversary show at New York Fashion Week on Friday (07Sep18), where he mingled with Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Bruce Springsteen, among others.

Asked by E! News if he’d ever team up on a fashion project with style stalwart Ralph, Yeezy designer Kanye had no hesitation in saying yes.

“Yeah. I would. The better question is would he want to do a collaboration with me,” he smiled. “I’m into it. Lets will it to fruition.”

He added: “He’s one of my idols.”

Kanye also dished that he’s been wearing Ralph Lauren since he was a youngster, revealing his first piece was “a pink polo from TJ Maxx or something like that”.

While the Gold Digger rapper was all smiles while he chatted with E! fashion correspondent Zanna Roberts Rassi, the same couldn’t be said for a reporter who got on the wrong side of Kanye at the event. The 41-year-old blew up when a journalist asked him about his wife Kim Kardashian’s feud with model Tyson Beckford, and he demanded event organisers kick her out of the media area.

“She needs to get kicked out right now, or I’m leaving. Right now,” he flatly said. “She has to leave, Ralph Lauren should not have people asking questions like this.”

TMZ uploaded footage of Kanye’s rant, which also followed him as he pointed out the reporter and told her: “Ralph Lauren would be very ashamed that you asked that trash question.”

Naomi Campbell is to co-host the 2018 Global Citizen Festival event in honour of Nelson Mandela.

The British supermodel first met the former South African President in 1994 when she flew to the country to judge that year’s Miss World competition, with the pair maintaining a close friendship until his death in December 2013 at the age of 95.

As the centenary of Mandela’s birth approaches on 18 July (18), Campbell has confirmed that she will be acting as a co-host at the Mandela 100 charity event to be held at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on 2 December.

“(The concert is aimed at) inspiring people and creating awareness of the world as a global citizen – we are all a global citizen,” she said, according to WWD. “Whether we like it or not, air travel, social media, climate change and television have connected us to such degree that it is no longer possible to put our heads in the sand and pretend our brothers and sisters do not exist. We are all in this together.”

In addition to Campbell, celebrity names such as Bob Geldof, Gayle King, Tyler Perry and Forest Whitaker will act as co-hosts and Oprah Winfrey will make a special tribute to Mandela.

The festival will also include performances from Beyonce, JAY-Z, D’banj, Ed Sheeran, Eddie Vedder, Pharrell Williams, Chris Martin, Usher and Wizkid, with more artists set to be announced in the coming months.

Tickets to the Global Citizen Festival Mandela 100 are free. People who’d like to attend are required to visit Global Citizen’s platform to apply, starting from 21 August.

“Nelson Mandela’s life story is a testament to the power of the human spirit and one man’s ability to change the world by standing up for what he believed in,” added Winfrey in a statement. “It is one of the great honours of my life to have spent so much time with him, and I look forward to celebrating his courageous life.”

Oprah Winfrey has signed on as the newest investor of healthy dining chain True Food Kitchen.

The A Wrinkle In Time star and media mogul has purchased equity in the U.S. restaurant firm and will serve on the board of directors in a bid to bring wholesome food to more Americans.

“I love bringing people together over a good meal,” Winfrey said in a news release to USA Today. “When I first dined at True Food Kitchen, I was so impressed with the team’s passion for healthy eating and, of course, the delicious food, that I knew I wanted to be part of the company’s future.”

The 64 year old was so excited by True Food Kitchen’s fabulous fare after sharing her first meal with her friend, celebrity personal trainer Bob Greene, at a location in Santa Monica, California, she made contact with bosses at the company almost immediately, inviting CEO Christine Barone to dine with her at her Montecito estate, where the two women discussed business opportunities.

“We discussed the future of True Food Kitchen and our strategy, and our goals to bring this way of eating to more people,” Barone told The Republic. “I get excited any time anyone is interested in True Food Kitchen, so I was certainly incredibly excited that she loved our brand and wanted to part of our brand.”

True Food Kitchen has 23 restaurants across the U.S. and Oprah has signed on to help double the amount of locations by 2021. Her role in the restaurant chain, which was started by Sam Fox and Anti-Inflammatory Diet pioneer Dr. Andrew Weil in 2008, is significantly different than her post as spokesperson for American diet company Weight Watchers – Oprah won’t serve as a promotional vehicle for True Food Kitchen, with the billionaire instead applying her business mind to expand the chain as a consultant and collaborator.

“Her involvement is really key to growth and success as we move forward, and we’re excited for her to be on board,” Barone added. “She’ll really be providing insight as an incredibly successful businesswoman… We’re looking forward to all she will bring to our team.”

Fausto Puglisi has set his sights on Oprah Winfrey modelling his Marina Rinaldi designs.

The Italian designer unveiled his second capsule collection for the Max Mara-run fashion brand, which caters to curvy women, as part of Paris Couture Week on Wednesday (04Jul18).

Pieces included a colour blocked dress, skirt featuring geometric print and leather studded jacket, with Puglisi adamant that women like Winfrey are his ideal customer.

“I loved seeing her in something tight and sexy at the royal wedding,” he told Vogue.com, referring to the pale pink Stella McCartney dress the media mogul wore to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s nuptials in May. “A curvy woman can be herself. No prejudice, no boundaries.”

Puglisi has tapped plus-size model and body positivity advocate Ashley Graham to front the campaigns for his fall 2018 and spring 2019 ranges for Rinaldi.

While the Sicily-born fashion star is used to working with sample-size models from his time helming French label Ungaro as well as his namesake brand, he is adamant that catering to a wide range of shapes and sizes is the future of the fashion industry.

“I said yes immediately,” the designer said of being offered the chance to collaborate with Rinaldi. “Max Mara is the best luxury group in Italy, and I wanted to better myself. We are living in a moment of inclusion. Let’s do something about happiness and freedom.”

Puglisi also divulged that he is looking to make a line of clothes from cotton for his spring line.

The collection marks 30-year-old Graham’s continued partnership with the Reggio Emilia-based company, having fronted ads for the label and released two ranges of denim-inspired clothes.

Sophia Webster and her team used to dance around their office when Rihanna wore a pair of her shoes.

Launching her label in 2012, English designer Sophia has become one of the go-to footwear designers for the rich and famous. But that doesn’t mean the thrill of an A-lister wearing one of her creations ever rubs off.

“When the office was a lot smaller and we were a smaller team, we used to just do the conga round the office when Rihanna wore our shoes and things like that, we’d just be screaming,” the 33-year-old laughed to the BBC. “The office downstairs would be like ‘are you okay? Is there a mouse?’ And we’d be like, ‘No! Rihanna’s worn our shoes!’

“Oprah (Winfrey) recently gave her amazing speech at the Golden Globes wearing my shoes, and that was such an inspirational speech, so I was honoured that she chose to.”

Revealing that she loves colour and embellishment, Sophia is known for her fun, whimsical designs.

It’s not just about making footwear look pretty though; the designer also has a thorough understanding of the craft of making a shoe.

“I spent a lot of time working for other shoe designers and working in factories before I started my own line,” she shared.

“I think before you can design shoes it’s really good to understand how they’re made and how they’re constructed because there are just a lot of technical restrictions. You have to try and be as creative as you can within those restrictions.”

Stella McCartney ‘speechless’ over Oprah Winfrey praise

Oprah Winfrey left Stella McCartney speechless after publicly thanking the designer and her team for saving her royal wedding outfit.

Oprah was one of the A-list guests at Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s nuptials on Saturday (19May18), and stunned in a blush pink double tiered dress by the English designer.

The outfit wasn’t the media mogul’s first choice though; she had originally intended to wear a beige dress until she realised it photographed “too white” for a wedding.

Luckily, Stella and her team were on hand to make sure Oprah avoided the ultimate wedding guest faux pas.

Sharing a video that Oprah had uploaded thanking the Stella McCartney employees, the designer posted a message of her own.

“@Oprah… you are truly the most outstanding human. Speechless that you shared this gratitude with your followers… all at Stella McCartney bow down to your brilliance x Stella,” she wrote on the label’s Instagram account.

In the clip Oprah had shared with her 14.4 million followers, the chat show legend didn’t hold back with her praise.

“I would like to thank the Stella McCartney team for working all night long to get this dress finished because we had dress-gate,” she laughed. “Wrong colour! Now we’ve got the right colour. I think we’re going to do OK. Thank you so much for the detail, and working all night. Thank you to the Stella McCartney team. Amen, amen, amen.”

As well as making Oprah’s dress, Stella also outfitted Amal Clooney for the nuptials. But the designer’s piece de resistance was creating the white silk crepe evening dress Meghan wore to her wedding reception.

“I am so proud and honoured to have been chosen by the Duchess of Sussex to make her evening gown and represent British design,” Stella gushed to WWD. “It has truly been one of the most humbling moments of my career and I am so proud of all the team on this stunning sunny royal day.”

The costume designer of A Wrinkle in Time has revealed how he created the impressive outfits seen in the movie.

The Disney fantasy film stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling as a trio of astral travellers, Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who. Paco Delgado was responsible for designing the elaborate garments worn by the supernatural characters, and admits that his work on the film was one of the most gruelling jobs he’s encountered.

“I have to say that this time I felt the most close to working on something similar to haute couture,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “When you create costumes, you use fabric and sew and it’s always complex, but not this level of complexity. We were embroidering hand-cast moulded plastic beads that we created in a warehouse especially for the movie, pleating neoprene and metal mesh.”

Paco went on to outline how the garments reflected the personalities of the three celestial characters.

“(Mrs. Which) is a warrior who has been in the universe battling against the forces of evil, so that came through with the use of metallic,” he detailed, explaining that unusual materials like plastic and optic fibres were prevalent in Oprah’s outfits.

Whereas he was inspired by everything from hummingbirds to butterflies when it came to Reese, who plays a character hailing from an ecological paradise.

“I looked at a Calla lily flower and thought, ‘It would be amazing if we could make that into a dress,” he smiled.

Finally, Paco wanted to depict Mrs. Who’s body of cultural knowledge within her clothing.

“I thought it would be good if (Mindy’s) dresses drew on influences from the earth like Japanese kimonos, African prints, South African embroidery, all mixed together in a sort of cocktail,” he shared, adding that the many layers resemble pages in a book.

Tiffany Haddish is planning to honour her late father at the Oscars on Sunday (04Mar18) by wearing a traditional outfit from his native Eritrea – but she wants Oprah Winfrey to give her stamp of approval.

The comedian and actress is still recovering from her Oprah Winfrey surprise on TV last week (ends23Feb18), revealing the meeting with her idol “touched my entire soul” – and now she wants to tap into her new friend’s style knowledge to help her decide what to wear to the Academy Awards.

Speaking at actress Alfre Woodard’s annual Sistahs Soiree on Wednesday (28Feb18), Tiffany told Entertainment Tonight, “I want to hit her (Oprah) up and ask her what should I wear to the Oscars. Like, I want her to give me advice on everything in life.”

Haddish, who is among the presenters at Sunday’s (04Mar18) Oscars then looked directly into the camera and said, “Oprah, should I wear this Eritrean African dress to the Oscars on the red carpet because my daddy is from Eritrea, and he passed away, and I want to pay respect. I want to show the world. What you think?”

The Girls Trip star met her idol while she was chatting about her dream of starting a food line with health-conscious Oprah during a recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

The multi-media mogul appeared behind her, prompting the 38-year-old to burst into tears and run towards Oprah. She then reprimanded Winfrey for not responding to any of her letters.

Oprah explained she lost Tiffany’s address and had no way of getting back to her.

Reese Witherspoon pulled out all the stops for the A Wrinkle in Time premiere on Monday night (26Feb18).

The actress led a parade of celebrities at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles to celebrate the launch of Ava DuVernay’s new fantasy-adventure film, which follows a young girl on a quest to find her father.

Reese, who portrays astral traveller Mrs. Whatsit in the flick, posed up a storm in a dark red one-shouldered gown from Michael Kors and topped off her look by having her blonde hair styled into loose waves.

She was joined at the event by Storm Reid, who takes on the lead role of Meg Murry. Storm, 14, looked lovely in a blue dress with sequin-studded tiered skirt which was custom made for her by Coach.

Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling, who play astral travellers Mrs. Which and Mrs. Who, also turned heads at the event. Oprah looked elegant in a dark blue dress with gold detailing which she complemented with bedazzled gold and black glasses as well as a braided hairstyle that took two hours to complete, while Mindy, who gave birth to her daughter Katherine in December (17), wowed in a purple Greta Constantine dress with a structured neckline.

Fellow star Chris Pine sported a blue three-piece suit from Giorgio Armani, Gugu Mbatha-Raw rocked a white gown with multi-coloured drapery by Vionnet, Bellamy Young looked like a princess in a white Azzi & Osta Couture ballgown, and director Ava stood out in a fuchsia dress from Cushnie et Ochs, which she accessorised with Stuart Weitzman shoes and H. Stern jewellery.

A number of other Hollywood names turned up to show their support for the movie, with Eva Longoria putting her growing baby belly on display in an olive green dress and black jacket, and Tracee Ellis Ross making a statement in a strapless floral dress from Michael Kors.

Laura Dern, Ellen Pompeo, Tessa Thompson, Yara Shahidi, Bianca Lawson and Anthony Anderson were also in attendance.
