Patty Jenkins gave Cathy Yan pep talks to help boost her confidence before she made her first studio movie, Birds of Prey.

Yan premiered her indie directorial debut, Dead Pigs, at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, and three months later, she was announced as the director of the DC Comics movie, starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

She felt a lot of anxiety about becoming the second woman – and first Asian woman – to direct a DC film, so she turned to the first female DC director, Jenkins, for advice.

“I had impostor syndrome, as I think many people do. I came from an indie world and I had a matter of months between my first feature premiering at Sundance and then running the ship on Birds of Prey. There was an element of: Do I belong here? Can I do this? Like all the insecurities that anyone would have,” Yan told Vanity Fair. “I was working with such a high calibre of people, Oscar nominees, and people I admired from afar in the industry for such a long time. There is this moment when you go, ‘Wow, they’re all looking at me.’”

She added that Jenkins’ pep talks made her feel “able to lean into that confidence and say, ‘Yeah, damn right they should be looking at me. I’m the director!’ It was just that little boost of confidence I think that was much needed.”

In the feature, the Wonder Woman filmmaker shared that her own role models included directors like Penny Marshall, Mimi Leder, Kathryn Bigelow, and Nora Ephron, and insisted that she doesn’t believe female filmmakers do a fundamentally different job than their male counterparts.

“I think the only thing that’s important about being a woman filmmaker is knowing what not to pay attention to, and just try to blow through it,” the director stated. “Being a filmmaker is being a filmmaker.”

Patty Jenkins is “trying really hard” to avoid directing the Wonder Woman spin-off movie.

Back in December, the filmmaker announced that a feature focusing on the Amazonian origins of the beloved comic book character, played by Gal Gadot, was “all mapped out”, and a third Wonder Woman movie was also in the works.

And in a recent interview with Total Film magazine, Patty revealed that not only is the story for the spin-off movie written and greenlit, but she’s trying “really hard” to not be in the director’s chair this time around.

“I’m not going to direct it, hopefully. I’m going to try really hard not to. It’s not going to be easy,” she shared. “But (Wonder Woman 1984 co-writer and former DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer) Geoff Johns and I came up with the story, and we sold the pitch, and we’re going to get it going. I’ll produce it, for sure.”

Patty also opened up about the future of Diana Prince and her superhero alter ego, noting that she’s even thinking about a fourth movie.

“I’m not going to nail down a fresh thought about it until (Wonder Woman 1984) comes out, because I kind of want to give myself a palette cleanser, and be fresh of mind,” the 48-year-old explained. “But yeah, there’s an arc that I have in mind for the first movie, and then the second movie, and then the Amazon movie, and then the third movie.”

Wonder Woman 1984, also starring Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, and Pedro Pascal, is set to be released in U.S. cinemas on 14 August.

The Monster filmmaker, who was the first woman to helm a big-budget superhero movie, returns to the director’s chair for the follow-up to her 2017 feature, starring Gal Gadot as the Amazonian warrior.

In an interview with Vanity Fair magazine, Jenkins revealed she put her 11-year-old son Asa to good use while he was on set and drafted him into the shoot on three occasions.

“I just changed his hair. Every time I needed a kid to do something, I was like, ‘Asa, get in here! Okay, now you’re blond,’” she joked.

The 2017 film broke records and became the highest-grossing movie to be directed by a solo filmmaker, and Jenkins is fully aware that a lot rides on the success of the sequel.

“It’s an interesting, complex thing when you realise that not only are you just a person doing your job, but that there are all of these other ramifications to what your success or your failure stands for,” the director admitted, before adding that she hopes her achievements will open doors for others. “If I can make another successful film and it proves that this model works, then it will hopefully help other people.”

Wonder Woman was an inspiration to Jenkins when she was growing up, and although she wanted the character to be powerful, the protagonist needed to be multidimensional too.

“There’s been such fear that a female character… couldn’t be vulnerable and they couldn’t be funny and they couldn’t have love,” she explained. “There’s this list of things they can’t have, to prove (that they’re strong). I’m like, ‘Well, that’s not a main character. You have to be able to have all these things.’”

Wonder Woman 1984’s release has been postponed until August due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins were determined to bring Chris Pine back for Wonder Woman 1984.

The Israeli actress made her debut as the iconic Amazonian superhero in the comic book adaptation back in 2017, alongside Pine, who played her love interest and ally, Steve Trevor.

However, he was tragically killed off while sacrificing himself during the epic battle scene in the final throes of the movie, leaving Wonder Woman, also known as Diana Prince, bereft with grief.

When it was announced last year that Pine would be reprising his role as the former U.S. soldier for the sequel, fans were intrigued as to how he could have been brought back to life, and Gadot has now revealed that she and director Jenkins were determined to make sure he was back for the follow-up.

“Chris was an integral part of the movie, and of its success,” she told Empire magazine. “And because he and I and Patty really enjoyed working together, we all wanted to have him back. And Patty and (co-writer) Geoff Johns found the best way that serves the narrative to bring Steve back.”

While she refused to divulge how Trevor returns, she did hint that something “crazy” was going to happen in the sequel, and said that the superhero has matured since the first film.

“The first movie was a coming of age, it was Diana becoming Wonder Woman. She was very naive and she didn’t understand the complexities of life. A fish out of water. In this movie, that’s not the case whatsoever,” Gadot shared. “Diana has evolved. She’s much more mature and very wise. However, she’s very lonely. She lost all of her team members and she’s guarded. And then something crazy happens.”

Wonder Woman 1984 is set to be released on 14 August.

Patty Jenkins is “super grateful” she didn’t end up directing Thor: The Dark World.

The Monster filmmaker was confirmed to helm the sequel to 2011 Marvel superhero movie Thor, starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, but just three months into development, she exited the project, citing “creative differences”.

Reflecting on the move in a new interview with Vanity Fair, Jenkins recalled how she was uncomfortable with the film’s proposed script and the scrutiny she felt as a woman.

“I did not believe that I could make a good movie out of the script that they were planning on doing,” she stated. “I think it would have been a huge deal – it would have looked like it was my fault. It would’ve looked like, ‘Oh my God, this woman directed it and she missed all these things.'”

Marvel producers subsequently handed directing duties on Thor 2 over to Alan Taylor. And Jenkins is adamant she made the right decision.

“That was the one time in my career where I really felt like, do this with (another director) and it’s not going to be a big deal. And maybe they’ll understand it and love it more than I do,” the 48-year-old shared. “You can’t do movies you don’t believe in. The only reason to do it would be to prove to people that I could. But it wouldn’t have proved anything if I didn’t succeed. I don’t think that I would have gotten another chance. And so, I’m super grateful.”

Jenkins went on to direct Wonder Woman for DC Comics in 2017. A sequel, also featuring Gal Gadot in the titular role, is set to be released in August.

Meanwhile, Taika Waititi was tapped to direct 2017 hit Thor: Ragnarok and is also making a new film, Thor: Love and Thunder, which is scheduled to hit cinemas in November 2021.

The release of Wonder Woman 1984 has been postponed until August due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The highly-anticipated sequel, directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, and Pedro Pascal, was due to hit cinemas on 5 June, but bosses at Warner Bros. announced on Tuesday that it would now be released on 14 August.

“When we greenlit Wonder Woman 1984, it was with every intention to be viewed on the big screen and are excited to announce that Warner Bros. Pictures will be bringing the film to theatres on Aug. 14,” the studio’s chairman Toby Emmerich said in a statement. “We hope the world will be in a safer and healthier place by then.”

Gadot, who reprises her role as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in the blockbuster, shared her relief that the movie’s release would be postponed.

“In these dark and scary times, I am looking forward to a brighter future ahead. Where we can share the power of cinema together again,” she wrote. “Excited to redate our WW84 film to August 14, 2020. I hope everyone is safe. Sending my love to you all.”

Jenkins, who also helmed Wonder Woman back in 2017, took to Twitter to share the news.

“We made Wonder Woman 1984 for the big screen and I believe in the power of cinema. In these terrible times, when theater owners are struggling as so many are, we are excited to re-date our film to August 14th 2020 in a theater near you, and pray for better times for all by then,” she wrote.

James Wan’s horror Malignant, starring Annabelle Wallis, was originally scheduled to open on 14 August, but has been bumped to accommodate the rescheduled Wonder Woman 1984.

Warner Bros. has also indefinitely pulled Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical adaptation In the Heights, which was due out on 26 June, as well as the animated comedy Scoob!, based on the classic Scooby-Doo characters, which was set for 15 May.

Representatives for Wonder Woman 1984 have shot down a report suggesting the blockbuster will be released straight to video-on-demand due to the coronavirus crisis.

Many cinemas around the world have been closed to help curb the spread of Covid-19, with the release of numerous upcoming blockbusters being postponed until movie theatres re-open.

The Wonder Woman sequel, starring Gal Gadot as the superhero, is still set for release on 5 June, but a report published last week speculated it would skip the cinemas altogether and head straight for streaming or digital services.

This report was swiftly denied by studio Warner Bros., with president of domestic distribution, Jeff Goldstein, telling The Wrap, “We’re looking to release the movie theatrically, that’s our plan.”

Charles Roven, a producer on the film, also told the publication, “It’s ludicrous if you consider how big a movie this is… Everybody recognises that, as interesting as streaming might be, if you want a huge, global worldwide box office, you’ve got to release it in a movie theater.”

Representatives for Warner Bros. also confirmed to IndieWire that they remain committed to giving the DC Comics movie, directed by Patty Jenkins, a full theatrical run.

Many movies that were showing in cinemas at their time of closure, such as The Hunt, Emma, and The Invisible Man, have received early digital releases. On Friday, Disney bosses also announced that they were following suit by making their latest Disney/Pixar animation Onward available to buy digitally that day. It will be available on Disney+ on 3 April for U.S. customers.

“While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes,” said director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae.

In addition, Paramount executives have decided to release The Lovebirds, a comedy starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, on Netflix after postponing its original 3 April cinema release.

Niki Caro has praised Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins for paving the way and inspiring her to helm Disney’s live-action Mulan.

The New Zealand-born filmmaker, who has joined the ranks of Kathryn Bigelow, Ava DuVernay and Jenkins, who have made films costing more than $100 million (£77 million), was disappointed in the almost non-existent opportunities for female directors in Hollywood when she started out.

“When I first started wanting to be a filmmaker, there was so little precedent for women doing this (big studio) work,” Caro told The Hollywood Reporter. “Patty changed the game with Wonder Woman. It was like a shot of adrenaline for me as a filmmaker.”

And for the live-action remake of the 1998 Disney animated classic, the 53-year-old hired a female-dominated crew, including cinematographer Mandy Walker, costume designer Bina Daigeler, and first assistant director Liz Tan.

Elsewhere in the interview, Caro revealed that a huge global hunt was conducted to find the perfect actress to play Mulan, with her sending a team of casting directors to almost every small village in China back in 2016.

“She’s a needle in a haystack, but we were going to find her,” she explained. “It’s impossible to make this movie without this person.”

Liu Yifei was eventually picked to play the young girl who takes her ailing father’s place in the Imperial Chinese Army to defend the country from Huns, and Caro immediately put the actress through a 90-minute physical assessment to ensure she was able to deal with the rigorous training and fight scenes during filming,

“(Liu) never complained once, never said, ‘I can’t.’ She went to her limits,” the director added.

“As soon as I started gaining weight, I had one of the financiers call me up. Actually, his wife saw me, and she was like, ‘Did you see Charlize? Have you seen what she looks like?’ And I got that call, like, ‘What’s going on with that?'” she told The Hollywood Reporter during a producers roundtable discussion.

“He was like, ‘What are you doing? You never smiled. You look so angry, you look horrible,'” Charlize, who also served as producer on the film, recalled. “So, you panic a little bit because you are putting yourself out there, and you are taking a risk, and when you do that, you are not a hundred per cent sure. You are taking a chance.”

The actress also opened up about the fights she and director Patty Jenkins had with the financiers, who thought they were “basically paying for a hot lesbian movie with me and Christina Ricci”.

“And initially when we went in to get our financing, it became very clear to me that there was this need for me to step in. And knowing what Patty wanted to do with it, I knew that we were going to come up against things. There were a lot of fights,” she explained.

Despite the criticism, Charlize scooped a haul of honours her role as serial killer Aileen, including a Golden Globe, Independent Spirit Award, a Critics’ Choice Award, and an Academy Award.

Chris Pine’s look in mini-series I Am the Night was inspired by cinematic heavyweights Paul Newman, James Dean, Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen.

The Star Trek actor stars in the Patty Jenkins-produced TV show alongside India Eisley. It’s based on Fauna Hodel’s memoir, One Day She’ll Darken: The Mysterious Beginnings of Fauna Hodel, which details her unusual beginnings and the connection to her grandfather, George Hodel, a prime suspect in the infamous Black Dahlia murder mystery.

Talking about the clothes used in the ’50s-set drama, costume designer Rhona Meyers shared some of the key influences behind Chris’ look.

“With the actors, it all happens in the fitting,” she told Variety. “India’s tiny, so we needed to go a little bit smaller. Chris’ character was based on James Dean, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen – all of the outsiders. So there were some photos of Paul Newman with super short pants and tennis shoes, and he wanted to keep that as his look the whole way through, so we did that.

“The actors have a lot of say because basically my job is to make them feel comfortable in the skin of the characters they’re taking on.”

Patty also had a big input. I Am the Night marks the latest project the Wonder Woman director and Rhona have worked on together, after collaborating on TV movie Exposed and the Oscar-winning Monster.

“It’s always collaborative, not only with the director but also with the actors, but I’ve worked with Patty a couple of times, and we have a bond,” she smiled. “She always has big ideas and we piece it out together.

“Originally Patty had some outfits she wanted like in the later ’50s when they had bolero matching with the big, full skirts, but it ended up looking too sophisticated. It’s always a work in progress, and we’re always changing as we’re going.”
