Pyer Moss designer Kerby Jean-Raymond has announced plans to stage a drive-in event during New York Fashion Week.

The Haitian-American designer, who founded his brand in 2013, confirmed on Monday that he will be unveiling his new feature film titled American, Also in the Big Apple in September before holding multiple drive-in screenings in cities across the U.S. so fans can view it from the safety of their vehicles amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Jean-Raymond did not share exactly when or where the premieres will be held.

And while he won’t be debuting a fashion collection at this time, there will be some specific “drops” of clothing available to buy at the events.

“It’s always been our mission to show the amount of thinking and labouring that goes behind putting together a collection – we’ve been slowing down the speed of how much we produce and improving the quality of what we produce throughout the years,” Jean-Raymond told Vogue. “This film aims to show the love and care our entire company puts into every single moment we create and will show that we appreciate fashion as an art form and communication tool that we’ve used to embolden a community around us.”

American, Also delves into the preparation the designer undertook in the lead-up to the release of his spring 2020 show held at the Kings Theatre in Flatbush, Brooklyn.

Earlier this month, Jean-Raymond stated in an interview with Simon Porte Jacquemus and Marni creative director Francesco Risso for Vogue’s Global Conversations series that he has no plans to hold a fashion show until at least 2021, but still believes there is a place in the world for such spectacles.

“None of us would be here without fashion week. When the halo brands have a show during a specific (time frame), smaller brands can piggyback off of that because they know everyone is in town,” he stated. “I do think the concept of the show has to change… But it’s an entry point that is so important for young designers.”

Anna Wintour is excited to see how the fashion industry responds to new challenges posed by the coronavirus crisis.

In an opinion piece published on Vogue.com on Monday, the U.S. magazine’s editor-in-chief marked the Covid-19 pandemic as a catalyst for much-needed change in the industry, with her writing, “Fashion has talked about change for years and now it finally is changing”.

Despite her sadness for those affected, Wintour is glad the virus has forced people to adapt accordingly and is making fashion designers ask themselves questions such as: “How will new collections emerge? How will they be shown? Not in the old ways, and I for one am excited about that.”

She cited a recent episode of Vogue’s Global Conversations, a live video chat discussion among designers such as Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss, Simon Porte Jacquemus, Marni’s Francesco Risso, and John Galliano of Maison Margiela and praised them for “thinking about the future in radical ways.”

One designer who earned Wintour’s particular admiration was Giorgio Armani, who has relocated the presentation of his couture collection from Paris this summer to Milan in January 2021.

Applauding the move, Wintour wrote: “What a benefit to Milan, which has been hit hard by this pandemic, and what a positive model for the industry in that Armani’s collection will be seasonless, reflecting Giorgio’s important statement that fashion must respond to this crisis by making less, and creating more long-lasting designs. I applaud what he’s doing and know that others in fashion are watching these developments closely.”

Kerby Jean-Raymond is certain the format of fashion shows will change in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.

The Haitian-American designer founded his Pyer Moss brand in 2013 and has quickly built up a reputation for using his shows to tackle social justice issues, with his spring 2016 menswear line event using video and street art to reference the Black Lives Matter movement.

And while Jean-Raymond currently has no plans to hold a fashion show until at least 2021, in a chat with Simon Porte Jacquemus and Marni creative director Francesco Risso for Vogue’s Global Conversations series, the style star insisted it is time for the industry to undergo a major overhaul in relation to events.

“None of us would be here without fashion week. Jean-Raymond went on to encourage designers and creative directors to consider how they can best harness the Internet until group gatherings such as fashion shows and events can be held again once the Covid-19 pandemic begins to ease.

“With the opportunities on the Internet, it’s not going to be the same (as a show), but maybe we can do a combination of real-life events with smaller crowds and more public-facing digital events simultaneously,” the designer asked. “In the past, when we live streamed our shows, it was really passive, but now I think the focus will be on creating that digital content, and spending more money on the digital side. We have to do our part as empathetic human beings to curtail the spread of this virus.”

Jeremy Scott has decided not to present his autumn/winter 2020 collection during New York Fashion Week in February.

The 44-year-old designer was scheduled to unveil the latest collection for his namesake label in the Big Apple on 7 February, but he has now decided to show his designs in Paris during Couture Week in July.

“Jeremy Scott will no longer be showing his fall-winter 2020 collection during New York Fashion Week. In a move to pay homage to the city that launched his design career, Jeremy Scott will show his upcoming collection in Paris in July,” representatives for Scott said in a statement, according to WWD.

Scott, who is also creative director of Moschino, isn’t the only New York Fashion Week regular to move his show elsewhere – Tom Ford has decided to show his upcoming collection at Milk Studios in Los Angeles on 7 February, just two days before the Oscars.

“This year, the New York Fashion Week calendar exactly overlaps Oscar weekend, and the last time that happened I showed in L.A. and it worked quite well,” Ford commented back in December. “There is an excitement in L.A. on that particular weekend and the relationship between film and fashion is a strong one. In my role as chairman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, my main intent and priority is to globalise and bring attention to American fashion. There is truly no bigger or more prominent stage in the world at any given time than Los Angeles during the Academy Awards.”

The NYFW schedule is also missing Tommy Hilfiger, who will be hosting his presentation in London, and Pyer Moss, who is sitting out of this season.

However, the calendar still includes shows from Brandon Maxwell, Jason Wu, Marc Jacobs, and Oscar de la Renta. It takes place between 7 and 12 February.

Bottega Veneta’s popular The Pouch handbag has been named as the “most-wanted” item of 2019.

As part of their annual Year in Fashion report, analysts at Lyst have looked at data, queries, page views, and sales metrics across six million fashion products from over 12,000 online stores as well as the global media coverage and social media mentions generated by the biggest brands and trends.

As part of this research, they also rounded up the pieces that have driven the biggest spikes over the last 12 months, and crowned The Pouch purse in the top spot.

“Bottega Veneta’s The Pouch bag has sparked more than 10,000 views a month since its launch,” a Lyst representative commented. “Page views increased 297 per cent on Lyst in September. The bag was seen on editors, celebrities, and influencers worldwide; Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Instagrammed it 39 times in the space of three months.”

Since Daniel Lee joined Bottega Veneta in June 2018, the Italian fashion house has undergone a huge revamp, with the designer winning acclaim for his minimalist designs and Stretch sandals, which immediately sold out upon release following the launch of the label’s pre-fall 2019 collection.

Accordingly, the Stretch sandals followed in second place on Lyst’s round-up, with Gucci’s GG logo belt in third, and Jacquemus’ Le Chiquito bag in fourth. Other sought-after pieces included Prada’s logo bucket hat, Louis Vuitton’s Multi Pochette bag, Ganni’s Checked Seersucker Midi Dress, Sandy Liang’s Fleece Jacket, Weekday’s Rowe Sky Blue Jeans, and Gucci’s GG Supreme Messenger bag.

Elsewhere, the Alexander McQueen oversized sneakers topped the list of Hottest Women’s Products in the first quarter of 2019.

“Searched every two minutes on Lyst, they were the brand’s bestselling product this year,” a spokesperson added.

The top collaborations were between Off-White x IKEA, Sacai x Nike, and Reformation x New Balance, with the main breakout brands including Bottega Veneta, Pyer Moss, Jacquemus, Paco Rabanne, Molly Goddard, Richard Quinn, Saks Potts, and Telfar.

The two-day event will take place in New York City on 10 and 11 October, with Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour resuming her role as host.

CFDA chairman Tom Ford, Tory Burch, Wes Gordon of Carolina Herrera, Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss, and Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez are also participating.

The theme of this year’s summit, which will include Q&As, experiential sessions and group discussions, focuses on the future of fashion. According to Vogue, designers, entrepreneurs, and cultural influencers will address topics from sustainability to inclusivity in “no-holds-barred, everything’s-on-the-table” conversations.

In a chat with the fashion glossy, Off-White founder and Louis Vuitton’s menswear artistic director Abloh explained his approach to fashion.

“From the beginning, I approached the idea of design from a grassroots level,” he mused. “I removed this idea that it’s somehow detached from the consumer.

“You don’t have to sit in your studio and throw a dart and hope that it lands on the bull’s-eye. If you actually walk up to the dartboard, you can just place it in the bull’s-eye. I think that’s the success of Off-White. I haven’t made a distinction between the design world and the real world – I’ve just immersed myself in both. And because I came from outside the fashion industry, I don’t have the luxury of creating collections in a traditional way.”

Pyer Moss designer Kerby Jean-Raymond has won the 2018 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund.

The fashion star, who launched his brand in 2013 – attracting celebrity fans including Tracee Ellis Ross and Issa Rae – is an outspoken advocate of social justice and makes a point to celebrate Black culture with his designs, with his spring 2016 menswear line referencing the Black Lives Matter movement via the use of video and street art.

At a gala hosted by U.S. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and the CFDA’s Diane von Furstenberg at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in Brooklyn, New York on Monday night (05Nov18), with stars such as Karlie Kloss, La La Anthony, Chanel Iman, Karolina Kurkova and Zac Posen in attendance, it was announced by actress Emily Blunt that Jean-Raymond has won the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, taking home $400,000 (£306,000). Emily Adams Bode of Bode and Jonathan Cohen were named runners-up, each receiving $150,000 (£114,000).

“At a time when our world faces so many challenges, I’m impressed by this year’s winners,” Wintour said. “Their work highlights a high degree of creativity and a deep-rooted commitment to the notion of community. They’re not only a credit to the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund as it celebrates its fifteenth anniversary, but also to the optimism and inclusivity of the very best American fashion.”

The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, established in 2003, helps emerging American design talent find continued success in the business of fashion.

Other finalists in the 2018 competition included Batsheva Hay of Batsheva, Christian Cowan, Danielle Corona of Hunting Season, Rebecca de Ravenel, Matthew Adams Dolan and Scosha Woolridge of Scosha.

CFDA president and chief executive officer Steven Kolb also praised the latest round of competitors and added: “For 15 years, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund has provided emerging talent with a path to become tomorrow’s American fashion leaders. In the process, we have identified many fashion stars, and created a culture that welcomes and fosters young talent.”

Previous winners of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund have included Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang and Joseph Altuzarra of Altuzarra.

Issa Rae made a statement with her outfit at the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards 2018 on Monday night (04Jun18).

The Insecure star, who hosted the fashion awards ceremony held at the Brooklyn Museum in New York, walked the red carpet in custom-made blue Pyer Moss gown dotted with thousands of Swarovski crystals.

But it was her black satin belt which was printed with the words “Every N**** Is A Star” that grabbed the most attention, with designer Kerby Jean-Raymond explaining to People.com that the ensemble was a joint effort.

“It was interesting and new for me because a lot of it was done via phone and pictures because of our work schedules. The sketching process was very fun,” he said, adding that the idea for the belt stemmed from his decision to use Boris Gardiner’s 1974 song of the same name at Pyer Moss’ fall/winter 2018 runway show in February.

Issa’s sartorial statement was also praised by a number of social media users.

“Just when I think I couldn’t love Issa Rae anymore, she hits us with a little Boris Gardiner on her belt. In case ya’ll forgot,” one user commented, while another added: “That belt! This Pyer moss dress! She shut that down.”

Issa didn’t just wear the Pyer Moss outfit on the night, as she changed into a belted bright green suit from Sergio Hudson to undertake her presenting duties.

And she didn’t hold back in her opening monologue, using the platform to take aim at Kanye West and his recent comments describing slavery as a “choice”.

“I’m about as fashionable as Kanye is black. Only when it’s convenient,” the 33-year-old said, according to USA Today. “That joke was my choice, just like slavery.”

Kanye was not in attendance at the event, however, his wife Kim Kardashian was there, and was later presented with the Influencer Award.
