Kerry Washington felt “empowered” in the racy ensemble she wore to the Golden Globes last month.

The Scandal star stepped out onto the red carpet at The Beverly Hilton hotel wearing a daring black Altuzarra ensemble which was comprised of a skirt with a thigh-high slit and a blazer with nothing underneath except for a bejewelled harness.

In a cover interview with U.S. InStyle magazine, Kerry explained that the outfit made her feel sexy and empowered that the same time.

“It was both really sexual and sensual but also extremely empowered and boundaried,” she said. “My favourite compliment was when this woman came up to me and said that she loved it because it was ‘so sexy’ but it also implied that ‘you can look but you can’t touch.'”

The 43-year-old also received praise from her fellow celebrities during the evening, although Isla Fisher was concerned she was going to expose herself.

“Isla Fisher was at a table with J.Lo, and Isla was like, ‘I’m so stressed out. I just feel like Kerry’s jacket is going to fly open, and it’s going to be a disaster,'” Kerry recalled. “Jennifer Lopez, who is the queen of Topstick (tape), just turned to her and said, ‘She’s fine!’ Jennifer and I are from the same neighbourhood in The Bronx, so she’s always looked out for me.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the actress, who is an ambassador and creative consultant for skincare brand Neutrogena, explained that she keeps in shape by doing exercises such as Pilates and yoga, while she and her children are big fans of swimming too.

“My husband teased me that if I did the (DNA test) 23andMe, it would come back 11 per cent mermaid. My kids are the same way. They’re just fish,” she joked.

Kerry and her husband Nnamdi Asomugha, who have been married since 2013, are parents to Isabelle, five, and Caleb, three.

Irina Shayk is amazed by the way Jean Paul Gaultier can find beauty in “everything”.

Gaultier tapped the Russian model to be the face of his new Scandal fragrance, a gig which suits Shayk perfectly.

“At first, I thought, ‘Wow!’ I was really excited. I like the name Scandal because it sounds like me… Scandal can be something flirty and sexy and charming and classy,” she smiled to Vogue France.

“Jean Paul Gaultier is one of those French houses that breaks down all barriers in fashion. Everything is a piece of art, inspired by all types of women. He doesn’t believe in one kind of beauty… Jean Paul Gaultier is all about charisma, and being different. He finds beauty in everything.”

Explaining her own relationship with perfume, Shayk, who shares two-year-old daughter Lea with boyfriend Bradley Cooper, claimed she likes to spray herself with scent, though hates anything overpowering that “leaves a cloud behind the person”.

Luckily, Scandal is a light fragrance, made up of honey, pear, jasmine, and floral notes, with the scent reminding the brunette beauty of her childhood.

“When I smelled Scandal, it reminded me of something. I was born and raised in a small village and we had a garden with two pear trees. I’m attached to this perfume because it brings back memories from childhood. I can imagine those pear trees, I remember the smell,” the 33-year-old shared.

Kerry Washington relies on special lash growing mascara to make her eyes pop on the red carpet.

The Scandal star swears by a highly-affordable Hydro Boost Plumping Mascara from Neutrogena, which costs just $7 (£5), for longer and healthier lashes.

“We tend to think about the impact of the environment or hydration on the hair on our head or on our skin, but it’s, like, lashes get lost in the shuffle,” Washington tells InStyle. “I find that a lot of mascara can be drying, and I find that the hair suffers. I notice that my lashes are healthier since I’ve been using it.”

The product is made with hyaluronic acid, a hydrating ingredient found in every cosmetic item from the brand’s Hydro Boost line as well as in skincare products.

The actress signed on as a representative for Neutrogena in 2013 and released her first makeup collection with the company in April (18).

Washington, who is currently appearing on the New York stage as part of the Broadway production of American Son, confessed while promoting the line that she once feared using makeup as a tool for self-expression.

“For a long time I was afraid of makeup, particularly as a teenager and during my young adult years,” she told The Cut. “I had to learn about makeup in the hair and makeup chair on different films, TV shows, and photo shoots.

“I had to learn that makeup isn’t about putting a mask on; it’s not about becoming somebody else. It’s really about bringing the best version of yourself forward, and that you can use these tools to enhance who you are without feeling like you have to be somebody that you’re not.”

Kerry Washington releases second make-up collection with Neutrogena

Kerry Washington has reteamed with bosses at Neutrogena to launch a second cosmetics line.

The Scandal star’s Force of Nature Palletes debuted earlier this week (ends31Aug18) and are being sold at beauty store Ulta for a limited time.

The new collection features five colours and Kerry explains she wanted the line to have a more dramatic look.

“(My) first (collection) was more of an essentials collection, and I’m obsessed with it still,” she tells Essence magazine. “I literally have it in my purse everyday, but it was a pallete for everyday, a natural look. Like just popping up your natural beauty with those essential tools that you can go (from) day to night.

“But, for the second collection, I was like, ‘We gotta find a little more drama…, so we started looking for more deep and warm and rich earth tones, so that the look is a bit more dramatic, yet still feels natural.”

Kerry, who has worked as a creative consultant at Neutrogena since 2013, loves splashing on the cosmetics and looking red carpet ready when she’s working, but she reveals she prefers to keep her beauty routine simple when she’s at home.

“My everyday routine changes,” she says. “I really do like to let my skin breathe a lot when I’m not working. Because when I’m filming I have so much make-up on, and you’re cooking under the lights for 16 hours, so I do tend to have a light hand with my day to day.

“But what that looks like changes all the time… I like to play.”

And she is trying to lead by example when it comes to teaching her daughter and son about taking care of themselves and their beauty routines.

“It really doesn’t matter what you say, it’s really about what you do,” she adds. “So, I’m trying to make the best choices for myself around drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, and using SPF (sunscreen protection) when we’re all hanging at the beach and the pool. I try to do those things and teach by example.”

Kerry Washington swears daily fish oil supplements are the secret to great skin.

The Scandal actress always looks stunning when she steps out onto the red carpet, with her flawless complexion the envy of women around the world.

However, Kerry has had her struggles with eczema over the years and has now shared that she is certain one natural product is the key to keeping the skin condition in check.

“(I take) daily fish oil supplements, because omega fatty acids work. And I’d never, ever skip moisturiser – no way – it’s too critical,” the star told Glamour.com, adding that she tries her best to keep hydrated too. “I believe drinking a tonne of water is vital to health and wellness. It’s so important to have hydration on the inside, but also finding products that can really lock in moisture on the outside.”

As a brand ambassador for American cosmetics and skincare brand Neutrogena, Kerry has access to all the latest beauty products. At the moment, she’s “obsessed” with Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Hydrating Serum, as well as the company’s Anti-Residue Shampoo.

“I use (a clarifying shampoo) once a month, because I rely on so much conditioner and leave-in products that, if I don’t hit the reset button occasionally, my hair can get weighed down,” the 41-year-old explained. “Neutrogena has a good one; it’s not too overdrying, which I think is important for curly hair.”

Kerry also recently teamed with Neutrogena on a limited-edition palette of eyeshadows, which featured powders in neutral tones, such as Brilliant, a soft gold shimmer, and Powerful, a chocolate brown.

And the brunette beauty hopes beauty fans feel like they can really use the colours in a multitude of ways.

“To me, you can open the palette, and no matter where you are, what you’re doing, or where you’re going, you can give yourself a pop of glam and freshness – that added sense of easy beauty. That’s why the kit is essential,” she smiled.

Actress Kerry Washington hopes her new make-up line with Neutrogena will help women express their personal traits.

The Scandal star worked with the cosmetics company to develop the Essential Eye and Cheek palettes and set out to personalise the items in the collection. She helped chose meaningful names for each of the items – including Captivating, Confident and Grateful – and explained she was inspired by her own beliefs on beauty and self-empowerment when crafting the palettes.

“Beauty – for me – is not just about how we look, it really is about who we are,” the 41-year-old actress told People Style. “So I wanted the names in both palettes to reflect who we are on the inside, the qualities that make us shine bright. Because, our make-up should do that. It should reveal those inner qualities.”

Washington also wanted to simplify women’s beauty routines with the Essential palette.

“Beauty doesn’t have to be complicated,” she shared. “It should feel like a bit of luxury in your life, but it shouldn’t be hard. That’s where the idea of the Essential palettes comes from: It’s something that you can put in your purse and know that you’ve got what you need.”

The mother-of-two has enjoyed the process of collaborating on the new line and working with creators at Neutrogena since she linked with the brand in 2013.

She explained: “I love being an ambassador for the company, but I really love being a creative consultant because I get to interact with our product from beginning to end and I get to meet everybody along the way who makes the product a success.”

The products developed by Washington will hit retailers on 22 April (18).

Kerry Washington is to be honoured by the Costume Designers Guild for her awareness and appreciation for costume design.

American actress Kerry is a regular on both the big and small screen, but it’s her role as Olivia Pope in TV show Scandal that has seen her emerge as a fictional style icon. She’s also a style trailblazer in real life, and regularly wows on the red carpet in quirky and colourful wardrobe choices.

She’ll pick up her spotlight prize at the 20th Costume Designers Guild Awards on 20 February (18) at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

“The spotlight award honours an actor whose talent and career personify an enduring commitment to excellence, including a special awareness of the role and importance of Costume Design,” the Guild said in a statement.

Lily Collins went home with the award last year, with Amy Adams and Cate Blanchett also previously winning.

Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo shared her delight at 40-year-old Kerry’s recognition.

“Kerry embodies style and elegance, and is a true fashionista,” she gushed. “Her appreciation for design, as well as her creative spirit, have made working with her over these seven seasons an absolute joy. She has been an integral partner in evolving her character through the art of costume, and her love of costume as a storytelling device is more than evident in her body of work.”

Oscar nominated costume designer Joanna Johnston, director Guillermo del Toro and jeweller and metalworker Maggie Schpak will also be picking up prizes at the glitzy awards ceremony next month.
