Joaquin Phoenix gave a heartfelt shout out to Heath Ledger during his touching speech at the 2020 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on Sunday.

The 45-year-old won the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role prize on Sunday for his haunting portrayal of failed comedian Arthur Fleck, who becomes the infamous Gotham City villain in Joker.

When he took to the stage to deliver his speech, Phoenix made sure he acknowledged the late Australian actor, who played the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight back in 2008 and tragically died of an accidental overdose just months before its release. He posthumously won a Golden Globe, a SAG Award and an Academy Award for his riveting performance as the comic book villain.

Phoenix, who has already won two of the same awards and is frontrunner for Best Actor at the Oscars in February, paid tribute to the late actor by saying, “Really, I’m standing here on the shoulders of my favourite actor, Heath Ledger.”

As well as his touching reference to Ledger, Phoenix used his time onstage to honour each of his fellow nominees in his category.

He opened his speech with a story about Leonardo DiCaprio, who was nominated for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and joked that he lost out on roles as a young actor to the Titanic star.

“There would always be two other guys that I was up against and we’d always lose to this one kid… every casting director would always whisper, ‘It’s Leonardo,'” he said. “You’ve been an inspiration for over 25 years to me and so many people.”

He then turned to Christian Bale, and jokingly begged him to perform badly in at least one movie, saying, “It’s infuriating. I wish you would. Just suck once.”

The star then focused on Adam Driver, who was up for his role in Marriage Story, and told him “you should be here (winning the award)”.

“I’ve been watching you the last few years and you’ve been turning in these beautiful, nuanced, incredible, profound performances. I’m just so moved by you,” Phoenix gushed.

Finally, he heaped praise on Rocketman star Taron Egerton, and told the Welshman from the stage, “You’re so beautiful in this movie and I’m so happy for you, and I can’t wait to see what else you do.”

Jennifer Aniston pulled out all of the stops at the 2020 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on Sunday night.

The 50-year-old, who won the prize for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her role in The Morning Show, stood out in a vintage white silk dress designed by John Galliano back when he was creative director of Christian Dior between 1996 and 2011.

Speaking about her outfit during an interview with Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet, Jennifer explained that she actually owns the gown.

“This is John Galliano for Christian Dior, this is a vintage dress that I sort of gave to myself as a present,” she said. “This is an investment. These are designers that are working for particular houses – I only have a couple.”

Jennifer completed her ensemble with jewellery from Fred Leighton.

But she wasn’t the only star to opt for white at the SAG Awards – Riverdale star Lili Reinhart looked elegant in a two-tone Miu Miu ballgown, The Handmaid’s Tale actress Yvonne Strahovski rocked a simple white gown from Khyeli and Christian Louboutin heels, while Millie Bobby Brown sported a Louis Vuitton outfit.

Other celebrities to make the best-dressed list included Zoe Kravitz, who matched her peach Oscar de la Renta column gown with white gloves and Tiffany & Co. bling, Cynthia Erivo, who stunned in a fuchsia and orange number from Schiaparelli, and Lupita Nyong’o, who dazzled in a strapless Louis Vuitton gown with silver sequin design.

Elsewhere, Renee Zellweger, who collected the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her film Judy, rocked a midnight blue dress from Maison Margiela with Jimmy Choo stilettos, and Scarlett Johansson made a splash in a teal blue Armani dress with plunging neckline.

Robert De Niro is to be honoured with the Life Achievement Award at the 2019 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.

Since launching his career in the early 1960s, the Hollywood actor has appeared in a string of successful films, winning Academy Awards for his performances in The Godfather II and Raging Bull, as well as Oscar nominations for his work in The Deer Hunter, Taxi Driver, Awakenings, Cape Fear, and Silver Linings Playbook.

Now, De Niro has been named as the 56th recipient of the Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA)’s highest tribute.

“Robert De Niro is an actor of extraordinary depth and ability. The characters he creates captivate our imaginations. From the smouldering inferno of young Vito Corleone to the raging bull Jake LaMotta and everybody’s grandpa Ben Whittaker, he continues to touch our hearts and open our minds to new and exciting worlds of understanding and emotion,” said Gabrielle Carteris, president of SAG-AFTRA. “It is my great privilege to announce that SAG-AFTRA’s highest honour will be presented to one of the most singular talents of our generation, Robert De Niro.”

In response, The Irishman star commented: “I have been a member of this union for over 50 years. It’s an honour to receive this award from SAG-AFTRA.”

The 76-year-old previously received a SAG Award for his work as a member of the cast of American Hustle and nominations for Marvin’s Room, Silver Linings Playbook, and The Wizard of Lies.

Previous winners of the life achievement award include Alan Alda, Morgan Freeman, Lily Tomlin, Carol Burnett, Debbie Reynolds, Rita Moreno, Dick Van Dyke, Betty White, and Julie Andrews.

The cast of Black Panther has described their excitement over a planned sequel.

At the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday night (27Jan19), the Marvel Studios superhero feature won the prize for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Director Ryan Coogler is already developing a follow-up to the hit film, and in a backstage chat at the SAG ceremony, a reporter asked the cast if they had any hesitations about participating in a sequel, because “it could be The Godfather Part II, or it could be Grease 2”.

“It’s one of those things where honestly, to be able to build on that legacy and those characters and the world that Ryan built – you know, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created years ago – but allow Ryan to actually tell that story, if there’s an opportunity to come back and do a second one,” responded Sterling K. Brown, who played the character of N’Jobu in the original.

Michael B. Jordan, who played villain Erik ‘Killmonger’ Stevens, went on to explain that he had every confidence in Coogler’s ability to come up with another original story.

“I mean, take myself out of that situation,” he laughed. “But for everybody to come back, I think I speak for everybody up here, it would be a tremendous accomplishment.

“Sequels, I think, are one of the hardest films to make, and I feel like to create a world and build upon it that’s so beautifully and delicately woven into the world of the Marvel Universe – but throughout cinema in general, you take Marvel out of it, I think it’s a movie that stands against all film across the board. So yeah, I think if there was an opportunity, I think everybody would be pretty excited to come back around.”

In addition, lead actor Chadwick Boseman, who portrayed T’Challa / Black Panther, noted that there was “no question” of his return, while Brown described Coogler, who also helmed films like Creed and Fruitvale Station, as a “beast”.

“He ain’t going to slip. Godfather II. Like, be ready,” he smiled.

Black Panther was widely praised by critics and grossed $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office, making it the second-highest grossing movie of 2018. The film has also garnered six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
