Brandon Maxwell is trying to take a more balanced approach to his business after years of pushing himself to an “unnatural extreme”.

The Texas-born designer has carved a name out for himself in the fashion industry of late, having served as Lady Gaga’s style director since 2012 and founded his own women’s ready-to-wear label in 2015. But while Maxwell is now one of the most sought-after designers, in a new Instagram post, the fashion star admitted he was near-exhausted at some points in his career.

“Over the last year, it became clear that that wasn’t really working for me anymore at 35 in the same way it did for me at 28. I was waking up every day with a dark cloud hanging over,” he wrote. “In the last couple months, I just decided to stop saying yes to every single thing, pushing myself to some unnatural extreme, working myself to a place that actually closed me off instead of allowing me to live, and just go along the journey. I’ve kind of found that the natural beauty that arises from that approach is so much more satisfying than when it’s calculated.”

Accordingly, Maxwell now feels able to pour all of his energy into his upcoming New York Fashion Week show. Even though the theme of the spectacle remains under wraps, the Project Runway judge noted that it is “about the journey”.

“I think everyone does this job because they’re chasing a feeling, a feeling they first felt when they were young. I’ve really felt it again this week, the way I did when I was in the middle of nowhere in my room alone, and that feels like a win. I feel stronger than I did a year ago, and I’m ready,” the 35-year-old added.

Maxwell will unveil his latest line on 8 February. Badgley Mischka, Longchamp, and Self-Portrait are showing on the same day.
