Kumail Nanjiani turned down small parts in Marvel movies because he was determined to star as a superhero in one.

The 42-year-old, who plays immortal being Kingo in the upcoming comic book adaptation of Eternals, revealed in an interview with Men’s Health magazine that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of fellow comedy actors Chris Pratt and Paul Rudd, who have carved out successful Marvel careers.

After he was passed over for a part in Marvel’s TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Kumail was determined not to be cast in nerdy sidekick roles, so decided to wait until a bigger part came his way.

“It was a pipe dream, but I was very strategic about it. I was like, ‘I don’t want to be just part of a Marvel movie; I want to be a Marvel superhero,'” he explained.

The Big Sick star appears alongside Angelina Jolie, Kit Harington and Richard Madden in Eternals, and his character is part of a group of cosmic-powered beings who are sworn to protect Earth.

Kumail’s superhero character Kingo disguises his powers by becoming a successful Bollywood star, and he confessed that he based his performance on Bruce Willis’ iconic role as wry police officer John McClane from 1988’s Die Hard, which is one of his favourite films.

“That movie’s life-or-death, and Eternals is life-or-death, too. I was like, ‘How can a character crack wise but still have tension, and not make it feel like you’re making fun of the whole thing?'” he explained.

Eternals will hit cinemas in November.

Kumail Nanjiani has wowed fans by showing off his physical transformation for his role in Marvel movie The Eternals.

The Silicon Valley actor and stand-up comedian was revealed to be playing Kingo, a cosmic-powered being and legendary swordsman, in the Marvel movie earlier this year, and he has been training heavily to prepare for filming.

On Monday evening, the 41-year-old showed off the result of his hard work, posting a shirtless picture on Instagram to flaunt his new ripped abs and bulging biceps.

“I never thought I’d be one of those people who would post a thirsty shirtless, but I’ve worked way too hard for way too long so here we are,” he wrote in the caption. “I found out a year ago I was going to be in Marvel’s Eternals and decided I wanted to transform how I looked. I would not have been able to do this if I didn’t have a full year with the best trainers and nutritionists paid for by the biggest studio in the world. I’m glad I look like this, but I also understand why I never did before. It would have been impossible without these resources and time.”

He went on to thank trainer Grant Roberts for making him “understand true physical pain for months and months”, the fitness team on location, the chefs at Matthews Street Catering for making him healthy meals, and his wife Emily V. Gordon for “putting up with me complaining and talking about only working out and dieting for the last year”.

Kumail’s picture subsequently went viral on social media and received many celebrity comments. Dwayne Johnson praised his transformation by writing, “Extremely hard work. Dense muscle is hard to achieve. Looking great my brother!!” with fist bump and flexing muscle emojis, while fellow former wrestler Dave Bautista wrote, “Holy good god! I’d say mission accomplished. Way to get after it brother!”

Brittany Snow added, “Holy. S**t,” Jason Biggs commented, “Holy balls,” and Chelsea Handler stated, “This is ridiculous.”

The Eternals, which also stars Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, and Richard Madden, is slated to hit cinemas in November 2020.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige: ‘Martin Scorsese criticism won’t alter way we make movies’

Marvel boss Kevin Feige has insisted Martin Scorsese’s criticism of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) won’t affect the studio’s output.

The Irishman director sparked a huge backlash from Marvel fans and stars such as Robert Downey, Jr. and Mark Ruffalo when he called the movies “not cinema” in a recent interview with Britain’s Empire magazine.

Scorsese addressed the controversy in an essay for The New York Times last week, claiming he did not want to attack the artistry of those involved but emphasised that such blockbusters are not to his taste.

Marvel Studios president Feige opened up about the controversy in an interview on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast on Sunday and insisted the veteran filmmaker is “entitled to his opinion” but described his remarks as “unfortunate”.

“I think it’s unfortunate. I think myself and everyone who works on these movies loves cinema, loves movies, loves going to the movies, loves to watch a communal experience in a movie theatre full of people,” he said. “Everybody has a different definition of cinema. Everybody has a different definition of art. Everybody has a different definition of risk. Some people don’t think it’s cinema. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. Everyone is entitled to repeat that opinion. Everyone is entitled to write op-eds about that opinion… I look forward to what will happen next. But in the meantime, we’re going to keep making movies.”

Addressing Scorsese’s comment that “nothing is at risk” in Marvel films, Feige noted that the studio killed off half their cast in Avengers: Infinity War – although they were largely brought back in the follow-up, Endgame.

He also stated that The Eternals, the upcoming movie starring Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek, was a big risk.

“It is a very big movie. It is a very expensive movie… That’s a risk if I’ve ever heard one,” the producer commented.

Richard Madden won the Most Stylish Man gong at the 2019 British GQ Men of the Year Awards on Tuesday night.

The Bodyguard star was handed the award by singer Rita Ora at the magazine’s annual bash held at the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in London.

Madden looked dapper in a midnight blue bespoke suit designed by Hugo Boss, which featured a velvet jacket and classic black tuxedo trousers.

During his acceptance speech, the 33-year-old also touched upon his new role in Marvel superhero movie, The Eternals, and joked that his friends don’t think he deserves the title of Most Stylish Man.

“My friends all find it most amusing that I’ve won this award that they don’t really think I deserve. Actors spend most of the time wearing other people’s clothes, so I’d like to thank Hugo Boss for this,” Madden quipped. “For the next few months, I will be wearing mostly a tight blue cosmic superhero costume, so not much chance of me winning again next year.”

Madden’s Rocket Man co-star Taron Egerton won the award for Best Actor, while Andrew Scott was named Standout Performance of 2019 for his role as The Priest in Fleabag.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who created and starred in the BBC show, bestowed him with the award, and jokingly praised Scott’s performance as “a combustion of charisma, grace, nuance, and complexity… culminating in a 162 per cent rise in religious pornography watched in the U.K.”

Nicole Kidman won Best Actress, 16-year-old Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg was given the Game Changer accolade, and pop icon Kylie Minogue was handed the Icon Award by music legend Tom Jones.

Gemma Chan and Barry Keoghan are reportedly in talks to join Marvel’s The Eternals.

According to Variety, the Crazy Rich Asians star will join the star-studded cast which includes Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, and Kumail Nanjiani.

This isn’t the first Marvel movie for British actress Chan, who played Minn-Erva in this year’s Captain Marvel, alongside Brie Larson and Jude Law. It is not known if the 36-year-old will reprise the role or play a different character in The Eternals.

Keoghan, who shot to fame in Christopher Nolan’s war epic Dunkirk, is also set to feature in the superhero movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The 26-year-old Irishman was recently seen in HBO’s critically-acclaimed series Chernobyl and Yorgos Lanthimos’ thriller The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and has just wrapped filming on fantasy movie Green Knight.

At San Diego Comic-Con last month, it was announced that Oscar winner Jolie would play Thena, Madden will be playing Ikaris and Hayek will play Ajak, the mother of the Eternals.

Chloe Zhao is directing the project, based on the 1976 comic book created by Jack Kirby, while Matthew and Ryan Firpo have penned the script, and Marvel boss Kevin Feige is producing.

It is thought the film will follow the adventures of the super-powered and near-immortal beings as they battle against their monstrous enemies the Deviants, that were created by cosmic beings known as Celestials. Zhao previously said that the film will explore what it means to be human.

The Eternals is set to be released in November 2020.

Angelina Jolie’s children are thrilled that she’s going to be playing a “strong” superhero in Marvel’s The Eternals.

The actress and activist was unveiled as part of the cast of the superhero film during San Diego Comic-Con earlier this month, alongside Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, and Kumail Nanjiani.

And the Oscar-winning star said her six children – Maddox, 17, Pax, 15, Zahara, 14, Shiloh, 13, and 11-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne – are excited to see their mum kicking butt in the highly-anticipated blockbuster.

“What’s really moving to me is that they want to see me strong, and so it’s less to see me in a film, but they’re just happy I will be strong and having fun,” Jolie told People.

Since landing the fierce role of Thena in the comic book adaptation, the 44-year-old has training with “everything from swords to ballet”, and she promised Marvel fans that she wouldn’t let them down.

“She’s a warrior. I’m going to have to work very hard to give the Marvel Cinematic Universe the Thena they deserve,” Jolie added.

The Maleficent star is also looking forward to teaming up with the film’s director, Chloe Zhao, as she thinks the Chinese-American filmmaker will make a “special” Marvel movie.

“With all the love and respect for the others and what makes them work, we hope to add something new,” Jolie gushed.

Hayek previously shared her excitement at being cast in The Eternals, and revealed her character Ajak had been changed from male to female.

“I’m so excited to join the Marvel family as Ajak, the mother of all Eternals. It used to be the father of all Eternals, but girls… this is OUR time!!!!” she shared on Instagram.

The Eternals will be released in November 2020.
