Dakota Johnson was shocked by the scrutiny she faced after the gap between her front teeth closed.

Back in August, the actress was photographed smiling at the premiere of her movie, The Peanut Butter Falcon, with fans soon noticing that the space between her two front teeth was significantly smaller than before.

And in a new interview with her Bad Times at the El Royale co-star Cailee Spaeny for U.S. InStyle magazine, Dakota confessed that the intense media attention she faced over the dental work was her worst nightmare.

“It will always be strange to have so much scrutiny on your appearance,” she explained. “Like, everyone was freaking out when they thought that I’d closed the gap in my teeth. The whole thing was a nightmare for me, honestly. I was so upset because I’ve had the gap my whole life.”

Dakota insisted that the gap had closed after she had a retainer on the back of her teeth removed, and she was left stunned by the worldwide coverage that focused on the gap.

“The fact that it was global news was so shocking to me because of the actual global news that we should be talking about. But, anyway, now I have a retainer, and I’m trying to get my gap back,” the 30-year-old laughed.

Previously, Dakota opened up on losing her tooth gap during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and joked that she was now getting food stuck in her teeth.

“I’m sad about my gap tooth too so I’d really appreciate some privacy during this time. I have to deal with a host of new problems now, I get food stuck in my teeth whereas before it would just slide right through,” she quipped.

Tyler Nilson was “offered money” to replace The Peanut Butter Falcon star Zack Gottsagen because he suffers from Down’s syndrome.

Zack has been training for a career as an actor since a young age, and had the part in the film written especially for him after he met Tyler at an acting camp for people with disabilities – but faced adversity from studio bosses who feared he would make the film “unmarketable”.

“Every step of the way has been a bit of an uphill battle,” Tyler shared on British daytime show This Morning. “We were told this would not be marketable, people would not go and see it in theatres… because he’s not a marketable face… We were offered money to replace Zack.”

The filmmaker, who co-directs the film with Mike Schwartz, went on to share bosses were certain the film would flop, adding: “We were also told it wouldn’t get on streaming services and people wouldn’t buy tickets and go to watch it in the cinemas.”

The movie, which also stars Shia LaBeouf and Dakota Johnson, follows a young man with Down’s syndrome who runs away from home to follow his dreams of becoming a professional wrestler.

It was met with critical acclaim and received the Narrative Spotlight Audience Award at South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas earlier this year.

Dakota Johnson ‘really sad’ retainer removal led to tooth gap closing up

Dakota Johnson was “really sad” to see her signature tooth gap close up after she had a retainer removed.

The Fifty Shades of Grey actress is known for having a small space between her upper two front teeth, and in a video for Vanity Fair in 2017, even demonstrated how she could put various objects into the gap, including toothpicks, a credit card, a cherry stem, a twig, and cash.

However, following Dakota’s appearance at The Peanut Butter Falcon premiere in Hollywood last Thursday night, eagle-eyed fans noticed that it looked like she had the gap closed entirely, and during an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, she spoke about the recent changes to her smile.

“I had a permanent retainer since I was like, 13, and it was just glued to the back of my teeth, and I was having a lot of neck problems recently so my orthodontist, she decided that it would be a good idea to take it off and see if my jaw sort of expanded,” she said. “It helped me, and my gap closed by itself. I’m really sad about it too.”

Dakota went on to insinuate that she hadn’t undergone any dramatic dental work, insisting that her tooth gap closed on its own.

“As you grow, as a human being, your skull expands, and your jaw and your teeth move. Your teeth don’t look like they did when you were a baby,” the 29-year-old smiled, before adding jokingly: “I’m sad about my gap tooth too. So, I’d really appreciate some privacy in this time. I have to deal with a whole new world of problems – getting food stuck in my tooth. Before it would just slide right through!”

To conclude the chat, host Jimmy asked Dakota if she would consider getting the tooth gap back.

“Yeah, but it’s gonna come back,” she replied. “Yeah, (I can get) other retainers. The world of dentistry is so advanced.”

While it is possible Dakota’s tooth gap closed on its own, Dr. Nina Bal, a London-based cosmetic dental surgeon and facial aesthetics expert, isn’t entirely convinced that the star hasn’t had some recent dental work done.

“Anything is possible but (it’s) very, very unlikely that the gap can close so perfectly itself, plus it makes no sense that a retainer was placed with a gap in between the teeth,” she commented. “Normally, it’s placed at the end of the orthodontic treatment once teeth are straight.”

A close-up photo of the star smiling at the premiere appears to confirm the speculation, though the 29-year-old has yet to comment on whether or not she had a recent trip to the dentist.

In light of the transformation, a number of Dakota’s fans have taken to Twitter to express their thoughts on her new look.

One user wrote, “Logged on to find out that Dakota Johnson, the only person who should have a gap in their teeth, got rid of hers…,” while another asked, “Is grieving over Dakota Johnson fixing her tooth gap a valid reason to not work?”

Yet, a third commenter showed support for Dakota, and praised: “I just found out Dakota Johnson fixed her tooth gap and I’m kinda sad because that was like her brand but if it makes her feel better I’m all for it u go queen (sic).”

Elsewhere, followers posted video montages in honour of Dakota’s famed tooth gap.

Other celebrities known for having gap teeth include Anna Paquin, Elijah Wood, Lara Stone, Madonna, and even Dakota’s rumoured boyfriend, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.

The Peanut Butter Falcon, also starring Shia LaBeouf and Bruce Dern, is slated to open in U.S. cinemas on Friday.

Shia LaBeouf was in a “fragile” state while he was filming The Peanut Butter Falcon.

The Transformers actor stars alongside Zac Gottsagen in the movie about two men adrift on a raft while trying to sail from North Carolina to Florida, and he explains he was in a mess emotionally while he was making the project.

“I felt really fragile coming in, but got even more fragile when we were there,” he said at the South by Southwest film festival over the weekend (09-10Mar19). “A lot of the stuff you see on the boat is me at bottom barrel.”

“I was also reaching for God real heavy,” he added. “I don’t know if I could have heard some of the things I heard from any other man. We had conversations I wouldn’t have carried on with any other person… really deep conversations you can only have with Zac, otherwise you would dip off and it would feel too saccharine.”

Shia was arrested for disorderly conduct, public drunkenness, and obstruction in Georgia during the shoot. Video footage of the incident, obtained by TMZ.com, showed LaBeouf verbally abusing the arresting officers, telling an African-American cop he was going to hell for the colour of his skin.

LaBeouf subsequently issued a public apology, insisting he was “deeply ashamed” of his behaviour, and started working on his sobriety. However, Zac explains he also helped the actor turn his life around while they were working together.

“Shia had been (through) struggle and bad times,” Gottsagen said. “I did change Shia’s life around to make it better.”
