James Gunn was told by Warner Bros. executives that he could do what he wants with any character from the DC Comics universe.

Last year, the filmmaker was hired to helm The Suicide Squad, which is a loose sequel to David Ayer’s original 2016 blockbuster, and filming finished just before the Hollywood shutdown amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

In a Q&A on his Instagram Stories, Gunn was quizzed about the upcoming movie, which sees Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, and Joel Kinnaman reprise their roles, and revealed that when he was in early talks with Warner Bros. about helming the film, he was offered his pick of projects.

One follower asked the 53-year-old if the rumours that he was asked by studio bosses to direct a standalone Superman movie were true, prompting Gunn to set the record straight.

“No one offered me a specific film, but various characters were brought up. DC said I could do what I wanted with any of the characters,” he explained. “I chose Suicide Squad because of my love for the Ostrader books, and movies like The Dirty Dozen. I couldn’t be happier with the film so far!”

He also cryptically teased the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, and told followers that the third movie, which is currently on hiatus due to Covid-19, would be the last for him and his cast, including Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, and Zoe Saldana.

“It’s probably my last one, and probably the last with the current team. But you never know!” he quipped.

Elsewhere in the Q&A, Gunn revealed that helming a huge superhero ensemble blockbuster would never be in the pipeline for him.

“I haven’t been asked, but wouldn’t do it if I was,” he replied to one fan, who asked if he would ever direct an Avengers movie. “Just doesn’t appeal to me.”

Pete Davidson is teaming up with his Saturday Night Live co-star Colin Jost for a new wedding comedy.

The 26-year-old will appear alongside Jost for the first time on the big-screen in Universal’s upcoming comedy Worst Man.

Davidson will reportedly play the best man of Jost’s groom, as a soon-to-be-married couple and their families prepare for the big day, according to Variety.

Worst Man is based on an original idea from the 37-year-old comedian, as well as writers Matthew Bass and Theodore Bressman.

Lorne Michaels, creator of Saturday Night Live, is also producing the film, and the hunt is still on for a director to helm the project.

There have been rumours that Davidson and Jost, who co-hosts Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update segment with Michael Che, are set to depart the sketch show later this year, with The King of Staten Island star unlikely to return when it begins production in the autumn.

Jost, who is currently engaged to Scarlett Johansson, is expected to depart after the 2020 presidential election in the U.S. in November.

Davidson has been gradually building a successful Hollywood career, with a recent critically-acclaimed performance in Judd Apatow’s The King of Staten Island, which was released earlier this month, and an upcoming role in James Gunn’s DC Comics movie, The Suicide Squad, which will be released next year.

Meanwhile, Jost will next be seen on the big screen in Warner Bros.’ live-action Tom & Jerry movie.

James Gunn has reassured fans Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Suicide Squad won’t be delayed because of the coronavirus crisis.

When the global health pandemic began, production on countless movies and TV shows shut down in a bid to stop the spread of the virus.

In addition, the closure of cinemas worldwide meant many film companies were forced to rethink whether or not to drop their features.

But in a Q&A session with fans on Twitter on Sunday, filmmaker Gunn was asked whether he thinks the proposed release date of 6 August 2021 for The Suicide Squad will remain in place.

“Right now, there’s no reason for The Suicide Squad release date to move,” he replied. “We are on or ahead of schedule. We were extremely fortunate to wrap shooting and set up editing from our homes (due to a post-production team and studio with foresight) before quarantine.”

The Suicide Squad, written and directed by Gunn, features an ensemble cast including the likes of Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, and Jai Courtney.

He added that the situation with the third instalment of Guardians of the Galaxy, also expected to drop in 2021, is much the same.

“Right now, the plans with Vol. 3 are also exactly the same as they were before coronavirus,” the director said of the film, which will see the return of Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord.

James Gunn has reflected on the emotionally challenging time he had while filming The Suicide Squad.

The Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker began production on the highly-anticipated follow-up to the 2016 movie last year, with original stars Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Viola Davis returning to the DC Comics saga, alongside newcomers John Cena, Idris Elba, and Taika Waititi.

Gunn celebrated the end of filming The Suicide Squad with a touching post on Instagram on Saturday in which he revealed that he had a hard time helming the project while grieving the loss of his father and his pet dog.

“And that’s a wrap on #TheSuicideSquad,” he wrote alongside a snap of the entire cast and crew. “My father died two weeks before we started filming and my dog died two weeks before the end. It was a hard, hard time in my life and yet the most fulfilling time I’ve ever had making a movie.”

The 53-year-old writer and director also honoured the star-studded cast, which also includes Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, and Michael Rooker in mysterious roles.

“The professionalism, talent, compassion and kindness of this cast and crew inspired me every day. Thanks to everyone involved in this film, in every stage of development, in every department – I am grateful from the bottom of my heart for you all. You are why I make movies,” Gunn concluded his emotional post.

The Suicide Squad will hit cinemas in August 2021.

John Cena ‘blown away’ by James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad script

John Cena was “blown away” after reading James Gunn’s script for The Suicide Squad.

News that the wrestler-turned-actor had landed a role in the upcoming DC Comics adaptation was announced last year, however details of Cena’s character have been kept under wraps.

The 42-year-old confessed he was a “casual fan” of superhero movies in a new interview with Collider and said that when he arrived on the set of the sequel to the 2016 blockbuster Suicide Squad, he was impressed with Gunn’s creation.

“Having seen the first movie and then reading the new script, I was blown away. The first 10 pages (are) like a movie in itself. It’s really, really special,” Cena teased.

He also compared his performance as a “storyteller” in the WWE wrestling ring to Gunn’s work as a director and screenwriter.

“I’m also a storyteller at heart. I got to go out there on a nightly basis in WWE and entertain and make them want to believe that they want to see a WWE title switch or that so-and-so hates so-and-so or whatever story we’re trying to put together for that night,” he explained. “So I tip my cap to a great storyteller.”

The Trainwreck star, who is rumoured to be playing the Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad, also revealed that he was taken aback during his first meeting with the 53-year-old filmmaker when he realised that Gunn had the whole storyboard for the movie covering the walls in his office.

“You want go to work with people who jump out of bed every day and want to go to work. (Gunn) is the epitome of that. He cares so much about what he’s doing… and I hope everybody enjoys seeing it as much as we’re enjoying making it, because it’s awesome,” he shared.

Margot Robbie is the best actor director James Gunn has ever worked with.

Earlier this year, it was announced that the 53-year-old filmmaker would write and direct DC Comics’ upcoming movie The Suicide Squad, which is the highly-anticipated follow-up to the 2016 movie.

Filming began last month on the flick, with original stars including Margot, Jai Courtney and Viola Davis returning to the sequel, alongside newcomers John Cena, Idris Elba, and Taika Waititi.

Despite only working with the Australian actress for a few weeks on the set of the film, Gunn believes she is the best in Hollywood.

“She might be the best actor I’ve ever worked with,” he told a fan during a Q&A session on his Instagram Stories, before adding that he also worked on the Oscar-nominated star’s Harley Quinn spin-off movie, Birds of Prey.

The filmmaker also opened up about Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi, who was cast in The Suicide Squad in an unknown role.

“He’s blowing my mind with how good he is,” Gunn shared, before adding that he was a big fan of the Scottish actor in the 2009 political comedy In The Loop.

Elsewhere in the Q&A, Gunn was asked if he was “limited” with his ideas while making the Guardians of the Galaxy movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“Kevin Feige asked me to include Thanos and create an origin for the Infinity Stones in Volume One,” he said of his experience with the Marvel boss on his first film, Guardians of the Galaxy. “Other than that I’ve never been asked to include any story point of connectivity in either Guardians, and I’ve been given completely free reign by DC.”

Jai Courtney feared a sequel to Suicide Squad wasn’t going to be given the go-ahead.

The Australian actor played Captain Boomerang in the 2016 DC comic book movie and is reprising his role for the follow-up alongside Margot Robbie and Viola Davis, as well as newcomers John Cena, Pete Davidson, Michael Rooker, and Idris Elba.

Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn is writing and directing The Suicide Squad, and Courtney said he was “really excited” to be returning for the sequel, especially as he once feared it might not make it to the big screen.

“I was pumped to be coming back, and to finally be able to portray this character again, and to be with this great group of people. It had been a couple of years between drinks. There was a period there where we didn’t really know if it was gonna happen or not,” he told Collider.

“They got a great script out of James, and the decision to work with him was a great one. So, I was stoked. I’m stoked to be here. It’s a fantastic group, and the script’s really exciting, so I have no doubt we’ll deliver something that people are gonna love.”

The Terminator Genisys star was also quizzed about what fans could expect from the follow-up, and was hesitant to give out any details in case he got himself into trouble with Warner Bros.

“It’s hard to comment on, so explicitly… It’s a tricky one to answer. It’s incredibly funny, but it’s still very violent and action-packed. I don’t think it adheres to anything specifically that we didn’t try to uncover a little, in the first movie,” Courtney explained.

“You’re getting too many details out of me. I’m going to walk myself into trouble here, in a minute… You’re just gonna have to just check it out. I’m that guy that’ll keep talking and talking and talking, and then I’ll have blown the f**king end of the movie.”

Margot Robbie is in talks to executive produce and star in comedy Fools Day.

The I, Tonya actress and her LuckyChap Entertainment team are in negotiations with executives at New Line to adapt Fool’s Day, the 2013 short by Cody Blue Snider, into a feature film.

The short, which has been honoured at more than 30 film festivals, focuses on a group of fourth grade students who play an innocent April Fools’ Day prank on their teacher and accidentally kill her. Convinced they will go to prison if anyone finds out, the kids go to great lengths to try to hide her body before a police officer arrives for the class’ anti-drug lesson.

Robbie is in talks to play the teacher in what is said to be a supporting role. If the deal is made, she will also executive produce with her husband Tom Ackerley and friend Josey McNamara for their LuckyChap production banner. Fight Club star Edward Norton will also produce alongside Bill Migliore and John Rickard.

Snider, who co-wrote and directed the 18-minute short, will helm the feature and co-write the screenplay with his brother Shane Snider and Keatyn Lee.

Snider, the son of Twisted Sister rocker Dee Snider, shared the news on Instagram and wrote in the caption, “I couldn’t be more excited to be making my passion project with everyone at @newlinecinema… I’ve been working tirelessly on this project for nine years and I’d like to take a moment to thank my team, everyone who worked on the short film, those who donated to the Kickstarter campaign and anyone who has supported me throughout my career. You know who you are, and I love you with all my heart.”

Robbie has a number of projects in the pre-production phases. She is set to play iconic Mattel toy Barbie in a live-action movie and reprise the role of Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad and Gotham City Sirens.

Peter Capaldi has joined the cast of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

The former Doctor Who star has signed up to appear in the highly-anticipated follow-up to the 2016 movie in an undisclosed role, according to Deadline.

Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson is also in negotiations for a cameo role that he will reportedly shoot between filming of the long-running live sketch show.

No details have so far emerged about the plot, but Capaldi and Davidson will be joining the likes of Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney and Joel Kinnaman, who are reprising their roles from David Ayer’s original.

And Idris Elba, John Cena, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Flula Borg, Nathan Fillion, Steve Agee and Taika Waititi are the newest recruits to Gunn’s movie.

Elba was originally cast as Deadshot, effectively replacing Will Smith – who is not returning for the sequel – although it was reported soon after the news was announced that the 50-year-old was disappointed the British actor did not get his blessing before accepting the role.

According to editors at Collider, Elba and Gunn then created a new part in the movie for the Golden Globe-winning actor, but details are still under wraps.

Production on The Suicide Squad is slated to begin later this month, with the first table read session of Gunn’s script to be held on 11 September. And once filming at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, Georgia has wrapped, he will return to Marvel to film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3., starring Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista.

The Suicide Squad will be released in August 2021.
