Thierry Mugler has applauded Cardi B for remaining “completely authentic”.
While Mugler may be one of the most famous names in fashion, he took a step back from the style scene in 2002.
However, he has come out of retirement on numerous occasions to dress celebrities, including working with Bodak Yellow rapper Cardi, who wore vintage Mugler to the 2019 Grammys.
Talking to The Birds actress Tippi Hedren for Interview magazine, the 70-year-old designer opened up about his admiration for Cardi.
“There’s an immediate connection, immediate communication, and it makes a big difference. It’s much more real. You’re able to see the person right away, especially with Cardi, who is incredibly natural. She’s completely authentic, and I love her for that. Her art is to be herself,” he praised.
The pair went on to discuss a wide range of topics, including keen bodybuilder Mugler’s physical transformation through exercise and surgery, and Hedren, the mother of Melanie Griffith, asked if his relationship with his body is an extension of some of his designs, which explore exaggerated shapes and silhouettes that go beyond the limits of a natural form.
“I never say I’m a fashion designer. I’ve always felt like a director, and the clothes I did were a direction of the every day,” he replied. “There are women with small waists and big shoulders, so it’s not much of an exaggeration to me. The shoulders were always important. In dance, I learned about the position of the neck, and the way you should stand.”
