She’s most famous for sticking her tongue out and sporting sexy ensembles. But Miley Cyrus went for a completely different look as she attended the recent Grammy Awards, with her retro hair waves perfectly complementing her elegantly sexy outfit.

We spoke to some of the U.K.’s top hair experts for their tips on how to get this classic look at home.

Dean Jones, owner of Dean Jones Hair, told us that the key to this look begins in the hair preparation, and to ensure that “hair is clean and well conditioned prior to styling”.

“Using a deep conditioning treatment works well to smooth dry ends and create a smooth base for the waves,” he added. “Dry your hair into a low side parting and try to keep your hair smooth and flat at the roots. Use a large barrel curling tong and curl your hair away from your face making sure that each section of hair is of equal size and flowing in the same direction.”

Once your hair is entirely curled, Dean advises sweeping through the curls with a paddle brush to create the stunning wave effect Miley sported. “Smoothing some oil through the ends is also a great way to add shine and reduce flyaways,” Dean smiled.

If you don’t have curling tongs, then you can use hot rollers.

“Hot rollers are great to create retro waves and hairstyles that require lots of body and volume and will provide hold to allow your hairstyle to last all night long,” Karen Brown, owner of Hair by JFK, told us. “Leave your hot rollers in as long as possible for the best results and until they have completely cooled down and then finish with a strong hold, volumising hairspray to give hair that extra oomph.”
