Anok Yai has responded to an insensitive social media post recently shared by Carine Roitfeld.

In light of the shocking death of unarmed African-American man George Floyd at the hands of police officers on 25 May, the former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief took to Instagram to show her support for the Black Lives Matter movement by posting a picture of herself and black model Yai, and accompanied it with the words, “Anok is not a black woman, she is my friend, I missing (sic)!”

Roitfeld later apologised for the timing and wording of her post, and after reflecting on the controversy for several days, Yai has now spoken out on the topic.

“A lot of people have asked what my reaction was to an insensitive post from a friend of mine on Instagram last week,” she wrote in an op-ed for OprahMag.com. “Of course, it was jarring-and it was just one of many similar microaggressions I’ve experienced during my time in fashion. But the bigger point I’d like to focus on is that the fashion industry needs to become educated…and fast.”

Yai went on to share that she has experienced racism and microaggressions on various occasions backstage at shows, as well as witnessed the same happening to her friends. She was disappointed to see a lack of support when models stood up for themselves, and accordingly, is now calling for industry leaders to do better in educating themselves and promoting inclusivity and diversity.

“Black models should not have to teach working professionals how to deal with our hair and skin day in and day out. Educate yourself and come prepared. It’s your job. The world is changing right before our very eyes, and we won’t be tolerant of intolerance any longer,” the 22-year-old added.

Cindy Crawford and Irina Shayk are among the stars who feature in Carine Roitfeld’s new T-shirt calendar.

For the 2020 edition of the CR Calendar, the former editor of Vogue Paris decided to ditch the traditional paper version in favour of creating 12 recycled cotton T-shirts which each feature a model striking a pose to represent their associated star sign.

Shot by Brianna Capozzi, the project features Cindy underwater for Pisces, Irina as Capricorn, Doutzen Kroes under a waterfall for Aquarius, Stella Maxwell in brown thigh-high boots as Taurus, and Candice Swanepoel in a complex yoga pose for Libra.

Carine told WWD that she wanted to create the T-shirt calendar for 2020, as opposed to a traditional paper one, in an effort to be more sustainable.

“We have to change, no? We have to make surprise,” she explained. “We did two already and did so many before with Vogue Paris so we decided to do a T-shirt because, first of all, less paper, so it’s more eco-friendly.”

All of the models posed for the calendar for free and 100 per cent of the proceeds from sales of the T-shirts will go to their chosen charities.

Roitfeld explained she was drawn to using star signs for the unique calendar because horoscopes are a big deal in the fashion industry.

“In fashion, people really ask it,” the 65-year-old shared. “Even Riccardo Tisci, one of the first things he asks someone when he meets them is ‘what is your sign.’ People are very excited to know the sign of the other one. It’s a way to break the ice.”

She also believes that working with a people who have a specific star sign is the key to success.

“Twenty-five years working with Tom Ford. He’s a Virgo. I’m a Virgo. 10 years with Karl Lagerfeld. He was a Virgo. I’m a Virgo,” she mused.

Hailey Bieber has recreated some of Princess Diana’s iconic paparazzi pictures for a new Vogue Paris photoshoot.

The model channels the ’90s looks of the late royal in the September 2019 issue, and took to Instagram to share her joy at the unique spread in the fashion magazine.

“New story for @vogueparis shot by @gstyles (Gregory Harris) styled by @virginiebenarroch (Virginie Benarroch, fashion editor). All credit and inspo to the amazingly beautiful and iconically stylish Princess Diana who I’ve looked to for style inspiration for as long as I can remember. Thank you for leaving behind such an iconic fashion and style legacy,” Hailey wrote alongside snaps from the shoot.

In one image, the 22-year-old sports a red, oversized Boston University crewneck sweater, shiny black bike shorts, as well as white socks and matching sneakers.

Hailey also recreated another of Diana’s casual ensembles, in which she wears a baseball cap, blazer, jeans and brown cowboy boots.

Emily Ratajkowski was one of the first to comment on the images, and simply wrote: “Dead.”

“So goooood,” Vanessa Hudgens commented, while fellow model – and Kourtney Kardashian’s ex – Younes Bendjima added: “Hell yeah.”

And the reaction on social media was just as bowled over, as users took to Twitter to share their excitement at the unusual shoot.

“Hailey Bieber’s Princess Diana-themed photo shoot is everything,” one wrote, while another posted: “I was never a fan of Hailey Bieber until NOW. She is absolutely killing it in each and every photo, serve that Princess Diana vibe gal.”

Princess Diana was the most photographed woman in the world, following her divorce from Prince Charles in 1996.

The mother of Prince William and Prince Harry was killed in a car crash in Paris in August 1997 at the age of 36.

Carine Roitfeld banned her employees from wearing Ugg boots or flip-flops when she was editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris.

The French editor and stylist, who is known for her chic monochromatic ensembles, acted as head of the fashion publication from 2001 until 2011, and has since gone on to found her own magazine, CR Fashion Book.

While Carine encouraged her staff to embrace individuality during her stint at Vogue Paris, she has now shared that she forbade them to wear two types of footwear items when at work.

“Uggs in winter, I find them horrific. And flip-flops in summer, because they look dirty,” she commented in an interview with Porter magazine. “Otherwise they could do as they wished. But I stuck with my style while the others were always, always, always, even the girls of my generation, always in jeans, black jeans.”

Elsewhere in the chat, Carine spoke about the pitfalls of social media and the way in which she finds the growth of some platforms to be “terrifying”.

However, she is determined to continue making her mark in a fashion world which is currently dominated by young models like Gigi Hadid and Kaia Gerber.

“I am still here, aren’t I? I don’t know where they will be when they are my age. I’ve proved myself that I have talent, and, without meaning to sound pretentious, I have my place today,” the 64-year-old insisted.

In addition, Carine opened up about her personal life and how she has recently split from long-time partner, Christian Restoin, with whom she shares two grown-up children.

But whoever she decides to date in the future, the fashionista is adamant that they won’t be younger than her.

“I am not a cougar girl, you know,” she smiled. “I am not a ‘MILF’, I have not had an affair and I have certainly not had an affair with a model. The one thing I have absolutely no interest in doing is going out with someone younger, model or otherwise, it’s really not my thing. If I don’t end up dating again, that will not be the end of the world.”
