Veteran fashion icon Betsey Johnson is “recovering wonderfully” after undergoing open heart surgery last week.

The designer, who is a breast cancer survivor, checked into a Los Angeles hospital on 4 April (19) for the operation, and she is already bouncing back.

“Betsey had a successful surgery and is recovering wonderfully,” the 76 year old’s representative tells the New York Post’s Page Six Style.

“She is so grateful for the well wishes and looks forward to her upcoming projects so she can be back with her fans!”

Prior to the surgery, Betsey admitted she while she had secured one of the best surgeons in California, she was a little nervous about going under the knife because her mother died from an operation over four decades ago.

“That was so long ago and there was a glitch in the testing,” she explained to WWD.com. “They have done so much testing on me… You have to be one of the lucky ones to get one of these insanely precise robots to assist your doctor.

“(And) if anything goes whoops, I am very, very happy to have lived a wonderful life, full of love and support… I’m happy to think and to know that, ‘Boy, I’ve had a great lucky life just filled with the best – family, friends, work, everything.'”

Now she’s well on the road to recovery, Betsey has a lot to look forward to – she launches a collection of original vintage styles online on Monday (15Apr19), and is preparing to debut a special line with high street retailer Urban Outfitters this summer (19).

Ageless fashion icon Betsey Johnson will undergo open heart surgery in Los Angeles on Thursday (04Apr19).

The designer decided to go public with her operation after learning Mick Jagger is having heart surgery in New York.

A breast cancer survivor, Betsey tells WWD.com, “To me, open heart surgery means they have to get the saw out. They can’t go through veins and arteries. For this, they have to cut me open…

“They said my aorta is the size of a 300-pound guy, but the walls are very thin. This little one-inch accordion gizmo is being thrown in and they will remove my aorta. They say it really works and my doctor has done a million of these procedures.”

And she owes the husband of a big fan thanks for setting her up with one of the best heart surgeons in California after she suffered a series of “baby seizures”.

“His wife is an ex-Betsey punk rock ‘n’ roll dresser of mine,” she says of the guy behind her operation. “I never stop running into girlfriends, fans and supporters.”

Meanwhile Johnson is going into the surgery a little cautious, because her mother died from an operation over four decades ago.

“That was so long ago and there was a glitch in the testing,” the designer explains. “They have done so much testing on me… You have to be one of the lucky ones to get one of these insanely precise robots to assist your doctor.

Country star Dierks Bentley is stepping into the fashion business with his own line of vintage-inspired clothing.

The Drunk on a Plane hitmaker has teamed up with designers at casual menswear brand Flag & Anthem to create the Desert Son collection, which features T-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, button-down shirts, jackets, denim jeans, and trucker hats.

Dierks was thrilled to land the collaboration, as he was already a fan of the label, but he had one stipulation – he didn’t want the range to bear his name.

“I wasn’t seeking out a fashion line, but it made total sense,” he tells WWD.com. “I don’t really need to do something to increase my celebrity status so I only say yes to things if they’re exciting to me. And this feels really authentic to my life as a husband and a dad. And I’m not Garth Brooks, I can’t wear my name on my clothes.”

The pieces in the collection, which the singer developed with the help of his longtime stylist Annie Psaltiras, reflect Dierks’ own laid-back sense of style, and he reveals the budget-friendly clothes will make up his tour wardrobe when he hits the road in May (18).

“It’s not that I want to hawk my own brand, but I want to support the guys making it,” he explains. “And I like the price points for the fans.”

“I kinda dress like my audience in some way,” he adds to PeopleStyle of his Desert Son line, which retails at $129 (£93) or less. “Not on purpose! It’s just who I am. Guys come to the show with their girl and they want to wear something that looks nice, but also something that their guy friends aren’t going to make fun of them for wearing. I think we do a good job of balancing that.”

And Dierks cannot wait to see fans sporting his new collection: “It would be kind of surreal,” he gushes. “Actually seeing someone wear it at a show, that would just bring a really big smile to my face. I’d have to find that person and give ’em a beer… or at least a high five!”
