Kanye West’s Yeezy brand received $5 million in Covid-19 aid from the U.S. government, despite the rapper’s personal wealth.

Hundreds of thousands of businesses across the country accepted help from a federal fund that was launched by President Donald Trump in an effort to help firms during the coronavirus pandemic.

The $2 trillion (£1.6 trillion) stimulus plan was aimed at helping cash-strapped businesses keep afloat, particularly as lockdown restrictions hampered trading and supply chains, with the loans capped at $10 million (£8 million).

After pressure to disclose the recipients of the funds, the U.S. Treasury’s Small Business Administration released public records documenting every business who received a loan.

Among the big name recipients included Yeezy LLC, whose owner Kanye was declared a billionaire in April, Valentino USA Inc., Oscar de la Renta LLC and Vera Wang Group LLC. Good American, the clothing label co-founded by Khloe Kardashian, was also listed.

The documents state that the $2 to $5 million (£1.6 to £4 million) loan to Kanye’s footwear and clothing firm also led to 106 jobs being saved, while the financial boost helped Valentino salvage 281 jobs, Oscar de la Renta saved 42, and Vera Wang preserved 197 roles.

Khloe’s Good American brand, which she co-founded with Emma Grede, received $1.2 million (£960,000), according to People magazine, with 57 jobs subsequently saved by the bailout.

“We have a large wholesale footprint and all of our partners were forced to close their stores, with many shutting down warehouses and cancelling orders,” a Good American rep told the outlet. “Applying for and receiving the PPP loan was a necessary step we had to take to ensure the long-term survival of our brand and business.”

Kanye West’s brand Yeezy is partnering with Gap on an affordable clothing line called Yeezy Gap.

The rapper and the American retailer announced on Friday that they had signed a multi-year partnership which will enable him to bring his Yeezy brand to the masses via Gap’s stores all around the world and its website Gap.com.

“YEEZY x GAP deal was inked yesterday, Thursday, June 25. It is a multi-year deal that will hit the market in 2021. The drops will comprise apparel for men, women, and children, and will be available via GAP’s online and physical stores,” a Yeezy rep wrote on Twitter.

The deal, which will introduced both brands to new audiences, brings the relationship between the fashion designer and the company full circle, as he used to work in a Gap store when he was a teenager in Chicago, Illinois.

“We are excited to welcome Kanye back to the Gap family as a creative visionary, building on the aesthetic and success of his YEEZY brand and together defining a next-level retail partnership,” said Mark Breitbard, Global Head of Gap Brand, in a statement.

According to a press release, the creative process is just getting underway, with the line expecting to appear in 2021. The collection will feature “modern, elevated basics for men, women and kids at accessible price points”.

A Yeezy rep explained on Twitter that Kanye will still be working on his own Yeezy pieces outside of the deal, with them telling a fan: “High end stuff on his own, affordable stuff with Gap.”

The 43-year-old rapper has expressed an interest in the brand for years and once said in 2015 that he would “like to be the Steve Jobs of the Gap,” referring to the late Apple boss.

Kanye, who has successfully partnered with German sportswear brand Adidas on Yeezy sneakers and apparel since 2013, maintains sole ownership of his brand, which was recently valued at $2.9 billion (£2.3 billion).

Kanye West has credited Pharrell Williams with inspiring him to “break the mould” when it comes to clothes.

The rapper and Yeezy designer, who is well known for pushing boundaries in both the fashion and music worlds, has opened up about his personal style in a new interview for i-D magazine and revealed that it was his close friend and collaborator, Pharrell, who motivated him to dare to be different.

“I think one of the things that you, Pharrell, inspired in me was this fearlessness to break the mould,” Kanye explained in a chat with the star for the Faith in Chaos Issue of the publication. “You’re the inspiration. Before I wore a pink polo, you were wearing a pink polo… You broke down the doors in fashion for us. Going out to Paris, you had this elegance, it’s not something that even can be learnt.

“Then to be the first guy to have a skateboard on the cover of The Source, for example. These moments, where we had to break out and just do something completely different, that basically has inspired an entire generation.”

Kanye is no stranger to the world of fashion, having partnered with the team at German sportswear giant Adidas to launch the first Yeezy line in 2015. He has since enjoyed success with the Yeezy Boost sneakers and utilitarian apparel.

And the Stronger hitmaker has been keeping busy during the Covid-19 pandemic by working on his highly-anticipated Yeezy Foam Runner, which is set to be released later this month.

“That’s exactly what we’re doing now, sitting here in Wyoming figuring out how to do manufacturing during Covid,” the 43-year-old shared. “The Foam Runners we’re coming out with in June are our first American manufactured items and we gotta figure out how to do localised manufacturing. But it’s more of an approach than a description. Everything, whether that’s a time in history or a genre of music or a style of clothing is just a different approach to getting things done.”

Kanye West is reportedly set to expand his Yeezy empire to include skincare and cosmetics.

According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, the rapper’s legal team recently filed for a series of trademarks related to the beauty industry, with the application covering make-up, face masks, false eyelashes, moisturisers, haircare, perfume, and nail polish.

In addition, the filing included hygiene products like toothpaste and deodorant, as well as more unusual items, like scented pine cones. Representatives for Kanye have not yet commented on the report.

But this isn’t the first time the superstar has considered venturing into the beauty world, as back in 2017, he filed documents seeking to trademark the rights to DONDA cosmetics – named after his late mother. However, the project never came to fruition.

Several members of Kanye’s extended family have already made their mark on the industry. His wife Kim Kardashian founded her successful KKW Beauty and KKW fragrance businesses in 2017, with the company estimated to have raked in more than $100 million (£80 million) in revenue the following year.

And the reality TV star’s younger half-sister, Kylie Jenner, has made a fortune from her Kylie Cosmetics brand, having signed a deal to sell a majority stake to executives at U.S. beauty giant Coty worth approximately $600 million (£479 million) late last year.

Earlier this month, Kanye came in second place behind Kylie on Forbes magazine’s highest-paid celebrity list for 2020, having raked in an estimated $170 million (£135 million) thanks to his earnings from his Yeezy sneakers deal with Adidas.

In a new YouTube video filmed for Balmain’s archives, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star spoke about the spontaneous change of plans to her intended red carpet outfit.

“I don’t know if anyone knows this, but we had a fully different look; an all-sequin gown to the floor look that (I was) going to wear for the Met Gala,” Kim recalled, adding that she and Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing ultimately decided to replace the outfit because “we wanted (it) to be more metal-y”.

The theme of the 2016 event was Manus X Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, with the accompanying Costume Institute exhibition exploring how designers reconciled handmade and machine-made techniques in the creation of haute couture and ready-to-wear.

Kim went on to explain that her revised ensemble comprised “a skirt and then a top from something else”. The resulting two-piece resembled a futuristic, feminine suit of armour, with a full-sleeved bodice and skirt with thigh-high slit.

Coupled with her husband Kanye West’s jewel-encrusted silver Balmain x Yeezy jacket, the combined look went on to become one of the most memorable of the year.

Elsewhere in the video, Rousteing remembered celebrating the efforts of his team at the annual extravaganza.

“What was beautiful is the diversity of our table, everybody looked incredible and everybody got along so well,” he smiled.

Usually the biggest party of the year for the fashion world, the 2020 Met Gala has been indefinitely postponed amid the coronavirus pandemic. Yet, designers and celebrities have taken to sharing memories of previous years on social media, with Rousteing insisting 2016 was one of his favourites.

“A night that you almost forgot the stress of the Met Gala, it was more like a family reunion. And that is something I haven’t experienced a lot in my life,” the 34-year-old reflected.

The rapper went into partnership with designers at German sportswear giant Adidas to launch the first Yeezy line in 2015, with the brand soon building up a reputation for its Yeezy Boost sneakers and utilitarian apparel.

Speaking about his design process in a cover interview for the May 2020 issue of U.S. GQ magazine, Kanye insisted that he views himself as an artist.

“Every piece that I make, it’s not only something that I would wear – I would never make anything that you wouldn’t catch me in – they’re also art pieces,” he told the publication. “Everything I’ve ever done has been an art piece, because I’m an artist.”

Kanye, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder last year, went on to note that he finds spending time in the studio to be “therapeutic”.

“I get to talk about a colour palette for one hour. A lot of people would have suggestions: ‘Go take a jog. Go get some fresh air.’ Colours are my fresh air,” the 42-year-old mused.

Elsewhere in the chat, Kanye revealed that he was working on couture pieces for Yeezy, though didn’t expand any further, and also shared that he has spent the past two years developing new products, including an anorak and more footwear.

“The anorak feels different. The Yeezy Slide feels different. The Foam Runner – you hadn’t seen that shoe before, either. And I like how all of these things now start to be spoken about as art pieces,” he added.

Kanye West is on a quest to create the “perfect” hoodie for his Yeezy brand.

In a cover story for The Wall Street Journal Magazine’s April 2020 issue, the rapper discussed the popularity of his fashion collaboration with designers at German sportswear giant Adidas, which was first launched in 2015.

While Yeezy is well known for its Yeezy Boost sneaker line, Kanye revealed he has now turned his attention to hooded sweatshirts.

“The hoodie is arguably the most important piece of apparel of the last decade,” he stated to the publication, before noting that his “perfect” design will be made from a neutral coloured fabric such as flax or dusty stone, “slightly cropped at the waist”, and be as “heavy as a winter coat”.

Kanye would ideally also like the garment to retail at around $60 (£51) and be available to be purchased from major retailers across the U.S.

“I like Costco as an idea. I like Walmart, too,” the 42-year-old commented, going on to explain that he sees Yeezy becoming a market leader around the world. “I believe that Yeezy is the McDonald’s and the Apple of apparel. In order to make the Apple of apparel the next Gap, it has to be a new invention. To invent something that’s so good that you don’t even get credit for it because it’s the norm.”

The vision of the perfect hoodie came to Kanye in July last year, and he has been pursuing it ever since. Workshopping ideas with fashion heavy hitters including Laurence Chandler, designer at Rochambeau, and Dov Charney, founder of American Apparel, the Stronger hitmaker soon began creating prototypes and samples.

However, Kanye has since became distracted by other projects, including a vest design, and a last-minute show held as part of Paris Fashion Week earlier this month.

Kanye joined North onstage halfway through her rap solo and smiled proudly as she confidently performed to the star-studded audience while wearing a custom-made Yeezy bright fuchsia padded gilet.

“I will never do bad things / Walk to the street / What are those / I have new shoes, they’re really cute,” she adorably stated to the crowd.

Mum Kim Kardashian was perched front row at the extravagant show, alongside Kourtney Kardashian and her seven-year-old daughter Penelope, and shared a series of videos of her eldest child’s performance on her Instagram Stories.

“I’m so proud of my Northie!!!!! Her 1st performance had me in tears! She had an impromptu performance on stage at her dad’s Yeezy Season 8 fashion show! Shout out to @zazathecreator, North hopes you like the remix!!!” the 39-year-old wrote, noting that North’s rap was a riff on five-year-old rapper ZaZa’s track What I Do.

Kanye’s latest Yeezy collection, his eighth for the label, featured a line-up of monochromatic designs as well as a preview of the highly anticipated Adidas Yeezy 451 sneakers, which are expected to launch later this year.

Kim was also spotted wearing designs straight from the runway, including an oversized suede beige coat, nude bralette, and grey textured trousers.

The Somali-American beauty was due to make her New York Fashion Week debut in Kanye West’s season five ready-to-wear show back in 2017, but in an interview with British newspaper The Observer, she recalled how the moment ended up being a watershed moment for her modelling career.

After Halima was presented with an outfit by the rapper’s team, she acknowledged it “was just not going to work” as the skirt sat above her knee.

“Even then I knew: walking away when something doesn’t fit is always better than feeling you need to force something,” the 22-year-old shared, adding that while she was disappointed, she felt empowered as she returned to her hotel. “And then, without having to say anything, they called back: ‘We have a second option.’ I tried it on, and it was perfect. I just knew it was a pivotal moment in my life.

Halima went on to make her groundbreaking appearance in the show wearing a floor-length fur coat.

She also noted that later that same year, she walked for Max Mara in an outfit that was designed just for her.

Elsewhere in the interview, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue star shared her plans to use her career to make a difference and emphasised how she wants to continue mixing her modelling with activism.

“My career in fashion is not just, ‘I want to work with this brand, I want to get on that catwalk.’ We’re not sitting here talking about ‘Buy this heel, because this heel will make you feel sexy,'” she fired. “I’m proud that I can say I combined fashion and activism. I can’t do one without the other.”

The Wolf of Wall Street actor officially announced on Tuesday via Instagram that he has teamed up with executives at the German sportswear giant for an unspecified project.

“This is the official announcement that I’m partnering with adidas,” he wrote in the caption besides a video showing the Adidas logo besides his name handwritten in capital letters. “Thank you adidas for trusting me and believing in my ideas and pushing them to become even better. This is a dream for me to start the journey of creating with a team I respect and love. Thrilled to show you all what we’ve been working on. More coming very soon. @adidasoriginals.”

In the comments, his celebrity friends showed their support for the partnership, with Naomi Campbell posting a series of clapping and heart emojis, Olivia Wilde writing, “Coooool” with a clapping emoji, and his mother Sharon Feldstein, who called herself a “proud mama”.

The 36-year-old didn’t reveal any further details about the collaboration, which he had teased a year ago on the Failing Upwards podcast.

However, it was rumoured on social media earlier this month that they were releasing two colourways of the Samba shoe and a new iteration of the Superstar shoe. These details haven’t been confirmed.

Jonah has been a longtime fan of the Adidas brand and helped promote their updated Lxcon sneakers on his Instagram account in October 2018 before their official release.

The star joins the likes of Kanye West and Beyonce, who have developed their Yeezy and Ivy Park collections with the company.
