Virgil Abloh is planning a Louis Vuitton collection influenced by late King of Pop Michael Jackson.

Music fan Virgil recently chatted with Interview magazine about how he loves to have tunes blaring when he’s creating in his studio, and shared that Michael’s songs are having a particular influence on him right now.

“I can’t work in my studio without music,” he told the publication. “I don’t like silence. I’m listening to John Coltrane. I’m listening to Miles Davis. But I’m also listening to whatever new rap is coming out that week. I have teams in Milan, Italy, London, and America, so as long as I have a fully charged iPhone, I feel like I can change the world. I’m talking on that phone, but I’m also constantly listening to music.

“My next Louis Vuitton collection is going to be based on Michael Jackson, and when I have Michael singing in the background, it’s a different type of shirt, it’s a different kind of boot, it’s a different fit of pants. Music is key.”

The Off-White founder, who won the Urban Luxe prize at The Fashion Awards 2018 on Monday night (10Dec18), took over from Kim Jones as the artistic director of menswear at the French label in March.

For the Interview piece, Virgil also interviewed Young Thug, along with editor Thom Bettridge, with the trio talking about how the face of fashion has drastically changed in recent years.

“When me and Kanye (West) first went to fashion shows, they wouldn’t let us in,” Virgil recalled. “We’d have to get back in the car and drive around the block. Now this collective of us is the whole culture. How we wear clothes and how we make our art is what rock ‘n’ roll was for previous generations.

“We are the ones extending it,” the Ride for Me rapper added.

Rapper Young Thug is expanding his fashion resume by designing new backpacks for streetwear brand Sprayground.

The hip-hop star, who has long been a fan of the backpack and luggage firm, has collaborated with company officials for the Young Thug x Sprayground capsule collection, comprising of two limited-edition releases made with durable water-resistant fabric.

The Diamond Cubes design features images of the gemstones against a black and purple background, while the Purple Tie Dye Shark has a distinctive rubber shark mouth mould across the front of the bag.

The project is Young Thug’s first as a fashion designer, although he has previously modelled for the likes of Calvin Klein and Adidas.

“Young Thug has a great fashion game and a great fashion name but he never designed fashion or accessories before,” Sprayground founder and creative director, David Ben-David, tells Billboard.com. “I wanted to bring him into my world.”

And David admits witnessing the unique Pick Up the Phone hitmaker at work in the recording studio has inspired him to step out of his creative comfort zone and explore his own desire to make music.

“I have been blessed to have done collaborations and have relationships with many of today’s most influential artists, who have such an amazing, profound effect on today’s music culture,” he explains. “Artists like Chris Brown, The Game and others, but it was Young Thug that pushed the pedal on this new wave I am taking, and it all stems from when he performed in his studio, it was a like a soul came out of his body.”

The Young Thug x Sprayground backpacks are out now, while David’s first song, Money on the Plane, is set for release this summer (18).
